I recently came across some interesting watches for sale on Ali-Express, and it caused me to dig in a bit deeper. In today's video we will talk about Casio, Seiko and Brew watches all being knocked off. We will compare them on screen so you can see what you're getting. Hopefully it's enjoyable and you learn something.
Remember - Purchase from a trusted retailer only! (like us!)

Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Marc! Appreciate you taking the time to cover an important topic in detail that wouldn’t otherwise see the light of day. Very thorough and I’m sure people will really appreciate all of this transparency and information. On top of that, it’s always great chatting with you! -Jonathan
La Marzocco Micra or Mini?
I enjoyed our spirited discussion! Always a good time.
All the best to you Jonathan! Give them hell!
@@hippolyte09 good eye! It’s the Micra ☕️🌟
@@johanvandersandt8904 you bet I will 😄🌟Long live Brew!
I don't mind homages, I do mind fakes.
I think that's a popular sentiment.
You should test the metals for arsenic or other heavy metals like in all the jewellery people are wearing from temu
Same
@Org80 Watches, it's simple 316L Stailess Steel, an high consumption steel made by millions of tons, and it's good. As it's now a rather cheap metal there is no problems of fakes.
Proper alignment of the bezel was a dead giveaway to the Feiko.
😆
🤣
@bignz721
Yaaaaaawn
That's getting really old now
The first thing I noticed was the fact that the paint on the bezel is spotted. Incredibly poor finishing.
The misaligned bezel is more proof of authenticity than proof it's fake..lol
The fact that Seiko don’t put sapphire glass in watches at £350 makes me wonder who the scammer really is when Pagani do for £40.
Building your own watch with some parts from AliExpress is hounstly a good ide. Sapphire glass case for like 35 euro, nh35 or 36 momvment is pretty good for 35 euro.
@@magnuscarlsenbutdumb aint this the truth. my favorite watches are customs. im currently building a casting setup to make cases and wont be copying anyone
@@liesofgasandpilesofshoes should you not use a milling machine for cases? Casting them might be really cool aswell tho!
Hahaha. The fact that you had to put a legal disclaimer at the front says a lot about the times we live in. You did it for science and we thank you for it! Its crazy how close these are!
Yeah, just a bit gun shy on the whole thing
Marc is the gold standard for an honest business person/you tuber. Thanks bud.
thank you
Wow, Jonathan seems like the real deal; a super quality product sold by a man with real ethics and integrity. I was also impressed by his pragmatic view and lack of vitriolic hate, even in the face of the theiving retailers. I will definitely have to check his product line again; hopefully to add a Brew to my collection of Islanders!
Yeah, he's the GOAT!
Yeah those brew watches look great, even with the bad finishing of the fake the design still makes it look desirable (I will stick to the real one ofc). And agree the creator is very mature and pragmatic about it.
1st time seeing brew new to the watch world, great design also chrono bracelet is very nice also titanium model, you can see the quality of the original vs the cheap junk.
Morning Marc. Thanks for this interesting video.
For the G-Shock in timekeeping mode, press buttons A, C, and D simultaneously, which activates all segments of the LCD display. Press D to cycle through the different screens. Depending on the G-Shock series you have, the screen will display the Casio module number. Press any button to return home. I bought what turned out to be a fake G-Shock on eBay. Has a 5590 module instead of the 5691 that it should have.
This was the longest ad for BrewWatches and I'm weirdly okay with it.
Yeah I felt that too, and super ok with it as well
Well done. I appreciate being able to listen to an intelligent conversation between people that actually have something to meaningful to say. Thank you both.
The Instagram counter going off was a total hoot. Loved it!!!
LOL. Timing!
Thanks for this. This sort of thing still blows my mind - that they can make and sell that casio knockoff, and clear enough margin to make it worthwhile, for $28. The scale economies must be colossal. Its nuts.
right? Nuts!
I never heard of Brew watches and just checked out their website after your video.... great looking watches.
Thanks for this. I stopped buying from Ali Express a couple years ago when I thought they were trying to steal my credit card information. The bottom line is, if a deal seems to be too good, it probably is.
I have to be honest; at one time I didn't like you very much. Since then I've gradually changed my mind.
I'm 67 years old, of which 60, have been as a watch enthusiast.
I'm fed-up of reviewers posing as 'friends' of their blogs. They're not your friend, they're businessmen, and the sooner you understand that, the better.
What I admire about Long Island, is that he makes that plain.
Well done mate, we could do with more people like you.
LOL. Thank you, much appreciated.
Great job Marc. I have a few homage watches simply because I love the look of the original, but won’t spend thousands to get one. I bought a real Brew a few months ago and truly love it. In my opinion, a homage watch shouldn’t be considered if the real thing is a quality piece and very affordable. In the case of Brew, you are buying a unique, great looking quality watch from a super guy in the U.S. One of the few brands where nothing looks anything like it.
thanks so much! Brew is awesome!
Wow, the Casio fake is so good it's a counterfeit. There may be one or two folk here who'll be thinking "if the fake has the same module and looks just like the original, but at
Marc it's been years since I started watching you! Thank you 🥰😍🥰
Would love to see if the fake G has any level of water resistance. That’s usually pretty hard to fake.
Yeah, I have half a mind to.
yeah putting a rubber gasket in a digital watch is really hard to do , shush your being silly now. the fakes are fine i have a few, i own real casio watches , ive taken the fakes apart and they are water proofed with rubber gaskets on all the pushers and the case back.
@@islandwatch Do it!
Commenting for the algorithm, but the sentiment is sincere: Marc, you're awesome. Cheers! //Rick
thanks
Thank you Mark for making us aware of these fakes.. they should not get away with it..
Love the channel and your islander watches..😊
The Brew to me is the worst case of copyright theft when it is sold on Amazon with what looks like their blessing and refuse to do anything about it. I love the amazing funky designs from Brew and the difference in quality is vast.
I just cancelled my Prime as soon as I heard that they didn't care one bit. Buh-bye Amazon!
Thanks Marc very informative. BTW, love the new Hirsch strap I received from you today. Thanks.
What a fascinating video! Thanks for making it. Hope you are keeping well, Marc.
So the poacher becomes the gamekeeper! 🙂 fair play mark, thank you for taking the time to make this video 🙏
For seiko
-Bezel lume pip
-original seiko has numbers closer to the center of the circle when feiko is evenly aligned between the bezel space
-fonts and their spacing on dial/caseback
-it didn’t show details on caseback, but I’m sure theyhave some things off
-such as NH36 on 6 oclock position on the dial
5:22 Fake Casio G-Shocks usually always have a clear sticker with a colored line as is the case on this watch. Sellers on ebay that are aware of this will only show the front of the watch and will also have a feedback score in the single digits. The reason for the low feedback score is because they open up many ebay accounts under different names. I see the fake Seiko also has that clear sticker with the colored line.
Interesting!
"I had to give the crooks money for the purpose of filming this video, but I also gave to charity". This man Marc is on Avenger time! A true protector of horologic honor and a selfless educator! This is why he is the man who wears 2 watches at the same time! ! I love you Marc!
Great video. Would love more content on how to avoid getting scammed by these on the secondary markets.
When it came to the Brew, I just laughed 🤣 "cool story bro, try again later"
Great educational vid(as always),Mark for all the newbies out there, especially at a time where these things keep blasting off. I had a similar experience recently, on Reddit. A vintage Seiko Quartz I put up for sale online a while back popped up in one guy's post asking for a caseback...for my watch. He used the pics I posted online to pass off as his own watch. I reported it to Reddit, and to chrono24, the platform that watermarked the pictures and they just raised their shoulders and did absolutely nothing about it. 😅I was in disbelief, still am to this day. So I guess it's now ok to copyright infringe in anything related to watches.
Wow...That's MADNESS! Jonathan's got some nice penmanship 👍🏽
Great video! Very detailed and I appreciate you distinguishing between homage and replica/fake. Sadly it's a problem that seems one step ahead of the people trying to solve it.
Thanks, Mark. It's really interesting and informative 👍🏻.
Great talk on the Openwork podcast! Came back to check this out after
I bought a fake Richard Mille on ebay for $27, a white model. If you don't look closely, it mimics the real half-million dollar model pretty well. It doesn't have the Richard Mille logo/name on it though, but I like it because it mocks the people who pay outrageous sums for the real ones. I'm just afraid to get mugged when wearing it. ;)
Imagine getting mugged for a knockoff.

Talk about getting your money’s worth.
Really interesting video. Thanks Marc!
thank you
I don’t buy anything from Ali Express, Amazon or eBay. Fakes galore and not worth the hassle. I only trust stores and that’s it (exception of company websites). I prefer I buy from a store as I like to feel the product prior to purchase.
Thanks Marc! As someone new to horology, it's good to know what to look for and to be aware of when considering watches. I've always been some who believes if a deal seems too good to be true, then it usually is too good to be true. What disturbs me the most with some of the crap coming out of China (and other places) is when the products are clearly fake or meant to deceive people. It's may be okay to create homages, but it's wrong to market them as the real deal.
So the white manga casio would not have issue with colour? Suddenly feels tempting to buy one
Fascinating! Thanks for sharing. 🙏
Problem is, here in India, a lot of scams are happening. The dealer ships a genuine piece, but midway, a delivery agent or someone involved in the process change the item with a replica.
Online store doesn't take responsibility, seller not at fault, customer ends up with a fake product.
Some replicas are almost identical and too hard to tell.
*Another way to identify counterfeit Casio G-Shocks is by the sticker on the case back. Some counterfeit models are sold with a transparent sticker on the glass too.*
As a very low-information beginner, I picked up an AE watch that turned out to be a fake Bell & Ross - but there was no logo in the photos (and at the time I didn't know that B&R even made round watches). So, if you are looking at the ad and see no logo but it doesn't say "sterile dial" then they probably air-brushed some actual logo out - check the review photos. One good thing that came out of it is that I got to see what happens if you put a quartz watch into a degausser.
Brew is SO distinctive though. They've built a really consistent and recognizable deisgn language, so doing an unbranded "homage" feels a bit more sketchy than tweaking a diver or field watch design from Seiko.
Great video! As much as I hate it, it shows how good the rep gshock is. Even if you replace it 10 times you are out ahead. Great for a beater.
Hey Mark. I purchased a new seiko 5 sport limited edition ( Supacars ) Australia. from an official seiko retailer whilst in Australia. they do not supply booklets or guarantee cards anymore. the retailer registered it online as soon as i purchased it. you have to download instructions. . Fascinating video but worrying.
Nice job Marc. Was hoping you would have turned the bezel on the Feiko. Overall good idea to spread awareness.
Ibrought the blue G shock from Ali Express , as the original was a limited edition and no longer available . I love it. I dont think anyone woukd know its not the real deal. Never embarrassed wearing it . Will probably buy the white as well. Definitely the best clone knock off ever.
I didn’t know about Brew watches but they are beautiful!!! Bucket list!!!
When you first mentioned fake Casios, given casio market as low cost watches, at first that seemed to make no sense, but i guess I forgot they do have expensive ones in their range. Personally, I already have several g- shocks (& I'm an anime fan ) but manga one is being resold as too pricey for a frivolous purchase but no way i consder a fake...... Classy move for the hospital donation 👍
You should invite Johnathan to talk about this with TGV. He was a professor, so he has done his research on the topic and can give us a detailed breakdown of the problem from a brand owner perspective. It is a more critical issue for mircobrands.
Inetersting, thank you
Thanks for the heads up! I don't buy from ali, but from the manufacturers website 🤞
thanks! Good plan
I watched this and then wondered if my Seiko was real or fake! It makes my gut sick to think I might have been fooled. But looking at it now, I think it is the real thing. However, mine does not have the extra little 3 o’clock index mark next to the day/date window. It seems some models have one while others don’t.
Hey Marc : ) I needed only to look at the pip - bulbous and not recessed. Not to be smart here, but it's a obvious give-away..... Thanks for the walk-through, though. Always good to get educated so we will know what to look for online... Take care : )
I got a knockoff of a Grand Seiko (a quartz version also in genuine version), I think an SBGX263, for around 110Eur and, once I put a vietnamese croc strap on it it absolutely look the part :D I had anyway to work a bit on it and re-fit the second hand to properly align it with the dial marks. Inside there's a Miyota quartz that keeps reasonable time (a 3/5 sec/week), has sapphire crystal and a champagne dial that looks absolutely gorgeous... Not regretting it at all...
Same for a Presage Cocktail time with ice blue dial and a real NH34 inside at around 150Eur... Love it!
My Turtle and my SKX009 are real ones tho, as like as my g-shock GM-2100C-5AER (but I did got a supercheak fake first to see how would it fit on my wrist) :)
The Feiko also lacks the 3 o'clock sliver of lume
The older version of the original Padi turtle also don’t have the 3oclock lume. That’s the newer version. I just want to put facts here in case u saw the one without 3oclock lume and instantly think it fake.. because it’s not.
Thanks, Marc! Great information!
thanks!
If they used an NH35 in that case, they would have had a bunch of people fooled. I bought a King Seiko SPB283 case on aliexpress last year. I think it was $150 for the case and bracelet. I own the original but wanted to do a modded version to bang around. Honestly, far as finishing goes, it was damn close. I was very surprised.
The fake Brew watch in silver face and silver everything is actually VERY good. The ones in colors are pretty cheap looking because the colors don't look good, but the silvery/white one is honestly so good. There are multiple different companies make the fake Brew watches, some actually have very good finishes and uses sapphire glass too. The one I have is very good, not completely sand blasted. The cheap part is the bracelet though.
It truely is a jungle out there - great video, on a very important topic. Btw, Jonathan comes across as a very pragmatic and sensible guy.
He's the best!
The fit and finish of the Seiko is too good for it to be genuine.
Damn, where can I buy an authentic G-Shosu if not Ali?
Those are sold in the open where I live. The majority are crappy but some are actually well made. I like to give them out as gifts 😂
Great video. Any decent watch enthusiast wouldn’t want a fake. Most should see the price and see through that. The problem is if they get resold for much more. That’s criminal.
Thanks for checking it out.
That's exactly what they do in my area. We have a thing that's like Craigslist and these Chinese fake G-Shocks always pop up for almost full real G-shock money. You absolutely know they are just ordering them from China and passing them off as real.
Great great video, I saw some of those fakes on ALi and was surprised at first, as I thought they just sold homages not fakes. I definitely understood they were fake by the pricing so thank goodness never bought one!
Thanks Marc for a very interesting video. I guess the market is full of all sorts you just have to be careful.
sure is
24:58 shameless plug for Brew…LOVE IT, best bit was with Johathan
Very informative great content, thanks Mark
Appreciate it!
Is the fake brew case Chrome plate? I see a lot of ali watches not being stainless steel.
Hi Marc. Long time listener first time caller. Isn't the price a huge indictor that it's a fake? $28 for a g-shock? $14 for a brew? $100 for a padi? You know you're getting a fake. Am I wrong or am I wrong? Cheers.
The biggest issue for me is those who bought a fake, thinking it was real and then ever need a service
RE: Casio Watch - did you test it by holding down the buttons to display the name 'Casio' or all lit segments? I liked your GeoChron so much I bought one for my 4k 43" Hisense.
Hi,
I searched for that fake casio watch on AliExpress but I didn't find it😢 could you please share the link? Thanks
Personally I don’t care if a $100K Patek is knocked off but I do have a lot of sympathy for Johnathan and the Brew crew. That being said I don’t think it’s a coincidence that two of the three watches shown are copied from limited editions. While ultimately the onus is on the person(s) committing the crime for the criminal act taking place, I can’t help but drawl a line between the rise in the ubiquity of limited edition/ “drops” and the rise in knock offs, particularly of smaller non luxury brands. If you create a demand that is greater than the satisfaction you can or are willing to provide, then that demand is going to go somewhere else. And TBH the difference in buying a knock off G-Shock that says “G-Shock” vs. “G-Shosu” is an exercise in moral hair splitting I don’t blame anyone for not caring about if that is the only aesthetic difference.
You have to see the Moonswatch knock offs they are selling. The dial is clearly not as good as the gen. The scary thing is that the Quartz movement is better. The stopwatch hand sweeps. The moonswatch ticks.
The text on the bottom of the fake Seiko's dial is egregious. Not only does it not even match what a real one looks like, no Seiko movement would use the "NH" nomenclature over their in-house "4R" one.
even on ebay there are a ton of fake seiko alpinist watch all of a sudden but they get away with it by calling it a mod.
Thanks for the heads up I've been eyeing them up on eBay.
crazy!
Yes, thank you. I just bought one on Teddy Ballgame instead of fake bay.
Is Ali International affiliated with Ali Express do you know?
The rip-off of Jonathan's watch should have "BRUH" on the dial. Cheers, Marc 🍻
Sounds like the owner of Brew is bruised 😂😉
Seiko does make those parts in house. They’re supposed to be one of the few vertically integrated manufacturers.
Please make a video of smashing the fakes in a hydraulic press!
This is why I stick to the San Martin store for original designs and don't like homages . Though homages that make some individual effort may get my attention , if the original is no longer made .
Maybe I can use Long Island Watches for the occasional San Martin .
Thanks for sharing. 🤘🤠
well one cost 20usd
and one costs 150usd and is impossible to get
so you know.. that's your first clue right there
but for 20 usd it's more then wortth the price
"A watch is a luxury, but not all watches are luxury."
Great content Marc.
thanks.
Mark, the AliExpress “Manga”, on their website states “no waterproof” in the specifications. And with the “Feiko”, I noticed the day/date, didn’t line up in the window, as in not centred. Anyway enjoy your REAL Manga, in blue as I do mate!👍🏼
Ouch......Thanks for the head's up!
Bought a pepsi Seiko 5 (turned out a Feiko) based on good pictures and great reviews from Aliexpress... later on the negative reviews started popping up, a week after I ordered mine...😖 if it's to good to be true it almost always is but it was around 70$ so I took a chance... Got 50% back from Ali, but in the end it actually was a win for me as I traded it via facebook marketplace (as a "Feiko") for a fully working 1993 Citizen Aqualand, which is one of my favorites! 😍 ✌
"knockoff casio" uses same authentic casio movement as the real casio.. and sells for $20 instead of $300.... lmfao... a G-shock must have one of the highest profit margins of any watch ever sold...
also very large distribution
It's not an authentic Casio module, the LCD font is different to the genuine watch.
Hi Toad, Unfortunately you are mistaken. It doesn't use an authentic Casio movement. The fake Casio, uses a fake Casio movement.
@@slyfondle1885 its still not worth 350 regardless
Its nice to see that you're showing both sides of the AliX world. There's some great stuff like your San Martin, Baltany, Cronos etc and then there's this garbage giving the rest a bad name
I dont mind homages and Pagani do a nice homage to the Seiko for about $90 that I would buy but rip off copies are a big no from me. The Casio fake is very close and I prefer the darker blue but when you think you are buying an homage but get a fake it would be disappointing although I am sure many people think there is no wrong doing with fakes. Thanks for showing us what to look out for. I shop quite a bit on Ali but as you say it is a minefield
I've got the real Casio (on my wrist right now in fact) but I quite like the saturated colours on the fake there.
When are you going to launch the Flightmaster?
Marc can memorize countless watch model numbers, now he can read invisible ink... I think he's going to become an AI soon...
LOL
Tried to buy a watch online, the website declined, I wasn't quite as persistent... Happy with the Seiko GMT I bought instead.
Bezel lining up is the first give away, day too. FWIW several years ago, I bought this watch (or extremely similar) several years ago.
Great video. It’s shameful that there are Chinese companies that continue to do this. Hopefully shining a light on this subject makes people more aware of how bad knockoffs can be and how unethical it is.
Just don’t buy anything from aliexpress.
The bezel being aligned told me it was a fake seiko
