    TOOLS...
All tools below are what I prefer to use in my own work. Feel free to use these to jumpstart ideas for you own Celtic art toolkit!
DRAWING PENCILS: A good range in lead weights gives you flexibility. For example, if you find a normal pencil draws too darkly and is a pain to erase, try a 2H or 4H, which will draw a lighter, more "silver" line, as opposed to something softer like a 2B or 4B, etc. Using "artist" quality pencils typically means less lead breakage and less "catching" on the paper. amzn.to/3c8mcC7
ERASERS: I prefer to erase with a white vinyl eraser. It is SO much better than a pink pearl type eraser (just burn that pink eraser, it's garbage! LOL). The white vinyl type is gentle on your paper and erases more cleanly. amzn.to/3c9embj
INK OUTLINING: Consider using a pigmented black ink for fine art as they are considered archival in quality. I love the Staedtler brand for my outlining. I tend to use all the different tip thicknesses - think for main outlines, and then down to the fine for details. amzn.to/3c3W3El
COLOR OUTLINING: Choose finer quality color pens so they are less likely to bleed or fade. Staedtler is again my go-to choice for these. amzn.to/3c9CgTV
COLORED PENCILS: I'm a snob and really love Faber-Castell (although a few shades I have are Derwent). amzn.to/2SVXXj1
That said, for bang-for-buck I have to hand it to Prismacolor. It is still a decent colored pencil and the price can't be beat. amzn.to/2YCy8YF

Oh! This was a lovely cross tutorial! I enjoy the varied looks you gave the crosses with those small but vital changes! Thanks so much for this series!

Thanks Cherie! It is amazing how one little alteration can make such a big change! And that’s a fairly simple cross. Imagine something bigger than a 3x3 dot... and add walls inside... it grows and grows!

I love coloring the designs. It is another layer of delight. I have a full set of prismacolor and about half of the polychromos line. I am a huge fan of the variety and quality of the color in prismacolors, but when I color a design like these I wind up with colored dust everywhere. I use tracing paper to keep my skin off the design when I am coloring, but I still have colored pencil dust all over. I use a brush, but somehow, a lot of it escapes and smears what should be simply my paper. How do I overcome this problem?
Watercolor markers seriously bleed through cardstock. Alcohol markers are better, but there is still a bleed. Help! What do you recommend?

I’m a lefty and I feel your pain! I have a bunch of hand… mittens? I bought a pack of white tube socks, cut the toe off, and snipped a thumb hole. I wear it no matter what medium I’m working in, as it makes a buffer between my hand and the page and I can chuck it in the wash after. There’s also something called a mahl stick, which lifts your hand off the surface of your work. They feel very awkward to use at first, but can work well. I don’t think they’re very common nowadays but you can try with a piece of dowel first to see if it works for you. You can also try using some Masonite or thin plywood to make “rails” on either side of the page, and then a third piece acts as a platform for you to rest your hand on as the hand rest slides up and down the page on the rails. Doesn’t have to be high, just enough to skim your hand over the page without touching.

@@AonCelticArt I very much appreciate your reply. I thank you for not making me feel incompetent. I will try the sock for sure. And I must constantly remind myself that I am not in a race. It takes a lot of patience to make something beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talents so generously.
