February 28th, 2009. In one of the best fights of the last decade, Juan Manuel Marquez aka “Dinamita” takes on Juan Diaz aka “Baby Bull” in a Lightweight showdown with the vacant WBA & WBO Lightweight Titles on the line. At this time, Marquez was ranked by Ring Magazine as the No. 2 Best Pound for Pound Fighter in the World (2nd only to Manny Pacquiao) while Diaz was ranked as the No. 2 Lightweight by the same publication.
Prefight records; Marquez 49(36)-4-1, Diaz 34(17)-1.
Up to this point, Diaz had suffered a lone less against Nate Campbell back in March 2008 and was relieved of his IBF, WBA & WBO Lightweight Titles.
Going into the fight, Diaz the former IBF, WBA & WBO Lightweight Champion held wins over Acelino Freitas, Julien Lorcy, Julio Diaz, Lakva Sim & Michael Katsidis. On the other hand, the veteran Marquez who was World Champion at Featherweight & Super Featherweight had notable victories over Agapito Sanchez, Alfred Kotey, Daniel Jimenez, Derrick Gainer, Joel Casamayor, Manuel Medina, Marco Antonio Barrera, Robbie Peden, Orlando Salido, Rocky Juarez & Victor Polo.
From the 1st round, it was a great fight with explosive exchanges by both men with tremendous ebb and flow and continuous action between a prime young fighter against a seasoned old warrior. Marquez was cut in the 5th while Diaz in the 8th.
However, Diaz’s cut was far worse and in addition to that, he was also badly wobbled by a left uppercut.
In the final minute of the 9th frame, Marquez scored a knockdown with a beautiful combination. Diaz beat the count but Marquez went straight for the kill; connecting with combination set up with a body shot, and a final uppercut put Diaz on the canvas again. This time, referee Rafael Ramos waved off the bout without a count as the Baby Bull was in no position to carry on.
The fight was so intensely action-filled particularly in the early goings, that Marquez by CompuBox Punch Stats had landed more punches in a single fight up to that point. This fight featured many exchanges at close range, and the action was so intense and exciting as the referee elected to allow both men to trade rather than breaking them up.
Marquez-Diaz was named Fight of the Year 2009 by Ring Magazine as well as the BWAA.

De los últimos buenos boxeadores que dejo muy alto el nombre de México,con un gran corazón y muy completo físicamente.Pegaba y aguantaba,es una combinación muy letal.Si te das cuenta el gatito le araño duro y no lo pudo derribar.Quiere decir que hay que tener aguante por un lado,y por otro hay que también saber atacar.Y este Márquez tenía las dos;lástima que no nacen de estos seguido.

A Juan Manuel Márquez lo querían retirar con esta pelea. Un tipo joven y agresivo (es verídico por que en ese momento se estaba disputando la soberanía de Manny pacquio como nuevo estandarte del boxeo ya que marquez estaba solicitando por tercera vez pelear con pacquio) lo que no resultó porque marquez supo trabajar a un muy agresivo Diaz, esta pelea marcó un antes y un después para marquez. El torito obtuvo el inicio de su fin como boxeador y marquez el camino para consolidarse como leyenda mexicana.

Juan Díaz entro con mucha bravura, pero creyó que la juventud y el poder que tenía sería suficiente, con el paso de los round empezó a bajar, y después a ir para atrás, Márquez es muy bravo con mucha técnica, y no iba a tirar la toalla, boxeador que se respete no lo hace y ganó por eso

The first fight I watched with a girlfriend and she actually enjoyed it. She thought Diaz would win because he was spamming punches, but I pointed out that Marquez's shots were a lot harder. Eventually she saw it too and we enjoyed a great fight...
