the tin solder under the GPU RSX proecessor has probably formed stress cracks and in the long run may potentially cause tin whiskers to form and if they may contact with another tin solder sphere it will short out your PS3 motherboard. Reballing with lead based solder spheres is a better solution than reflowing.
@countach27 Lol, I replied thinking you were the OP! I think the idea is that you wave the heatgun over the required parts so as to not over heat the surrounding area which would cause damage. Putting it an oven would surely risk other areas of the board (or the board itself) getting damaged if the temp was high enough.
@parmar78 I am now so confused by watching several of these YLOD repair videos - should I use a heat gun or oven? Oven can melt some parts of motherboard but heat gun can warp the motherboard. Grrr, so confused :O
Hi mate, I bought a reflow set from you, just wanted to ask, how long should I actually reflow the board with the heatgun? I plan to heat the entire board up a bit, but how long do you reckon I should concentrate the heat on the cpu and gpu chips?
The question is how long has this repair lasted? I have repaired my own the past 5 times. with each fix with different results. Like the idea of Cooper Sims just need more info. Thnx
For the curious, the liquid is flux and it does a few things. It's a weak acid that cleans and prevents oxides from forming on the solder while it's liquid. It also helps transfer heat between the parts so they heat more quickly and evenly.
hey mate, i bought your kit. and in the kit it says that you will also show a way to do it without a heat gun. can you please create a video showing how that is done. cheers
I have the exact same problem now did you fix yours? I think my heatsink isn't making contact with the cell and rsx chips. I order some copper shims to try and reduce the gap between the two i'm about out of things to try to fix this.
ive done a simple fix to my ps3, bought a couple artic thermal paste and did a fix, fixed it once, using a hairdryer (obv. didnt work), then i did a proper fix, (heatgun then aplied the paste and reassembled), with the proper fix, my ps3 lasted about a month, do the copper chips really help the heatseek that much?
what gets me is theres no copper shield to start with so is this a Sonys way of covering up repairs and this video proves they should of thought about Heat extraction earlier before releasing the PS3 but hey we just keep running like lambs.. so thank you ive ordered the kit now ive been shown how flux works :P
got a ps3 here which turns on and fan speeds up then beeps 3 times with a flash of yellow for less than 1 sec then flashing red light. i had i look inside and it seems someone has put a new layer of paste on anyway as it was all still very moist. i tired a hair-dryer method which only melted the back plastic bits near the fan. not sure if this would work or not. any ideas??
Where can I get replacements of the rubber pads? Of the 4 rubber pads, 2 of them are so melted they won't go back on because they just fall off when you turn it upside down.
At last u just need the copper shims, u can reflow, but you dont need, cause the copper shims gives the Chips more contact to the PCB. The copper chims are also very good if u have no display/monitor, just add one at your RSX and all works again, u can use also some cent coins :P But its better to reflow it a bit ^^ Nice vid. btw
Guys just go to Ebay and search Reflow Flux, Thermal Paste, And Red Copper Shims. They have the same exact ones that these guys are selling except for cheaper
So what if you follow these steps and the ps3 still powers off when it starts up? How do you know if the motherboard, hard drive, power supply, or something else is the issue?
@parmar78 LOL :) I think I will cook the board in the oven at 150' F for about eight hours and then reflow with a heat gun, kinda trying to mix and match to get the best of both methods :D Now just gotta wait till I receive all the shit that I ordered on eBay
i bought that product, tried to fix my ps3 and it still has the ylod i did all the right steps and carefully filled my processor up with paste, and copper sims, so i really dont know whats wrong, i got the 60GB and it's the ylod i think.. but did the steps, took me 3 hours.. and still doesn't work plz help?
It's the proper amount of heat and it requires a jig to mount the board to avoid warping. This video is for instructional purposes only and it leaves out that part. The shims are easy the reflow unfortunately isnt. Tried once and it worked for an hour or so then it broke again
can you fix mine m8 im willing to pay you 80- 100$ depending on how bad my system is its not reading disks and when i try to quit a game taht it will read it gives me an error =(
i watched ur clip my ps3 has not got the ylod yet it just keeps overheating with the message turn of ps3 ive changed and Replace the Original Thermal Paste many times still the same thing beep beep over heating please can some one help me thanks
Technically yes... or no. Reballing actually replaces the dodgy solder which this does not do, this just reflows the duff solder so it works again. That said this repair can still last for more than a year so it's not bad for the effort involved.
The PS3 is shit it has serious issues....mine has a green screen with green patches and then a black screen with thousands of white dots. I think it is ridiculous that Sony released a console that has such a short life span before it needs repairing. Everyones PS3`s are becoming damaged because the circuits inside the PS3 are not good enough..we shouldn`t have to do these repairs. The PS3 was released in 2006..it shouldn`t have because the PS3`s electronics are not good enough.

i bought a kit months ago on ebay and received it fairly quickly, great little kit for fixing your own ps3's ylod. thanks luckyardi

@parmar78 I doubt that, a regular hair dryer won't get hot enough, you're looking to aim for at least 500' F when you reflow.
@countach27 Lol, I replied thinking you were the OP!

copper plates will conduct cold from the fan creating less heat

Is it possible to use a hair dryer instead of a heat gun to achieve the same results?
@Luckyardri what does reflow mean? whats that liquid u pour do?
Also do you just heat the two pads or the whole board?
Where can I get replacements of the rubber pads? Of the 4 rubber pads, 2 of them are so melted they won't go back on because they just fall off when you turn it upside down.
SuperChairmanMeow thermal pads
Have you blown dust out with compressed air?
Can someone tell me why the copper shims are used? and how is it better than just using the thermal compound? thanks in advance!
@countach27 Cheers, I've bought a heat gun now anyway.
i Saw a different fix online that did not involve the copper shims. what is the difference?
At last u just need the copper shims, u can reflow, but you dont need, cause the copper shims gives the Chips more contact to the PCB.

help man my ps3 wont boot up it turns on but wot's display anything help what can i do ???
will the preheating still work with the hair dryer?
After putting the copper shims,do u still put the heatsink clamps?
I'm not too sure if u should...or if u don't have to
you should!
Is ur ps3 still working? Nice video by the way
Haha, yes it is actually. Don’t use it much anymore though. Blu-Ray player is what it is nowadays.
@@Luckyardri yeah even though its quality still hd but with under $100 is really worth to buy
hi will the copper shims work with a ps3 80gb
Guys just go to Ebay and search Reflow Flux, Thermal Paste, And Red Copper Shims. They have the same exact ones that these guys are selling except for cheaper
Does this kit also work with the PS3 slim?
how much/how long do you heat it up for?
might be able to find a reballing service on ebay.
wanted to buy the shims but too bad you don't ship to my country
for best results is to get your ps3 reballed its gonna be good as new and it last as long as six years
How long does this repair last?
It says in the description: "PS360 No Clean Reflow Flux"
So what if you follow these steps and the ps3 still powers off when it starts up?
How do you know if the motherboard, hard drive, power supply, or something else is the issue?
@parmar78 LOL :) I think I will cook the board in the oven at 150' F for about eight hours and then reflow with a heat gun, kinda trying to mix and match to get the best of both methods :D Now just gotta wait till I receive all the shit that I ordered on eBay
how long does this last?
Why on earth do you create more insulation between the RSX and the heat sink . This seems anti-adventageous (respectfully speaking )
i bought that product, tried to fix my ps3 and it still has the ylod i did all the right steps and carefully filled my processor up with paste, and copper sims, so i really dont know whats wrong, i got the 60GB and it's the ylod i think.. but did the steps, took me 3 hours.. and still doesn't work

is that one still working?
Do u need the flux? U guys don't ship the flux to USA on ur eBay
yes u shill use the clamps or elts u wont have any pressure on the shims / GPU N CPU it probably oveat to
copper shims reduce heat for about 25%
can you fix mine m8 im willing to pay you 80- 100$ depending on how bad my system is its not reading disks and when i try to quit a game taht it will read it gives me an error =(
Thnx I purchased
yes.
i watched ur clip my ps3 has not got the ylod yet it just keeps overheating with the message turn of ps3 ive changed and Replace the Original Thermal Paste many times still the same thing beep beep over heating please can some one help me thanks
So no need to reball. Just remove and clean old chips, new thermal paste and add copper shims...this is all thats needed for fix?
Technically yes... or no. Reballing actually replaces the dodgy solder which this does not do, this just reflows the duff solder so it works again. That said this repair can still last for more than a year so it's not bad for the effort involved.
it might be a heat gun..
Think this is easy? Try it
