I am so glad I found this video. I was about to buy a 25 pound mace because I use 25 pound dumbbells. After watching this video I bought a 10 pound mace. It just arrived today and I tried using it and holy cow, that’s even slightly too heavy for me to do anything holding the far end of the handle. The middle, seems just about right.
I'm a weight trained guy and experienced in lifting. A 5kg was a challenge at first but I out grew it. I've just got an 8kg which is fairly challenging but not too heavy.I'm glad I didn't over stretch and get the 10kg
Five months on and I can now manipulate my 4kg macebell with one arm! Just bought a 6kg. The 8kg is still a bit challenging. Really cool to come back to this video and see how far I've come over the year! Thanks for the help back then. Hope to be swinging the heavier macebells as easily as you one day! ;)
Hey Jay, thank you for sharing this with me. Really excited for you that you're able to crack the one handed swings. Increasing in weight is easier than learning the technique, so good for you! Good luck on your journey :)
I'm 6'1", 170lbs, and very fit. I have 10, 15, 20, and 25lb Onnit maces. There is a learning curve for 360s. Start with 10lb to learn, or you might hurt yourself. After awhile, 10 will go from feeling challenging to almost too light. 15lb is a very versatile weight once you've progress. It will likely be your favorite. 20lb is much more challenging. Your form MUST be good or you're going to hurt yourself. 25lb is a beast for 360s. I can do it, but it's definitely taken time to get there. Bear in mind there are a zillion mace exercises, so having a collection is awesome. For example, the 25lb is just amazing for grave-diggers. Your core will thank you.
@@realsamhyde, lol. I am a big-wave surfer in northern Oregon. Last week I did a 7.5 hour mountain bike ride with 8200' of climbing. I regularly do 150 _strict_ pullups in 10 sets of 15 (and I can do more). Are YOU more fit?
Also, for you readers who are not idiots like Sam, the point I was making in my original comment is that there is a learning curve -- a _feel_ -- to how to do the swing, and a lot of it simply has to do with familiarity of the motion, and the confidence that comes from that familiarity. It has nothing to do with being "fit" or not. Also, it is prudent to gain that familiarity with low weight so as not to injure yourself. But once you've got it, go ahead, go heavy. For me, currently, 25lb is plenty. If it were to become too easy, I could simply do more reps.
New to the scene. Just bought my second mace on your advice. Made the usual rookie mistake and bought a 6kg to start... 3 days later I ordered my White Lion Athletics 2.3kg mace. I wanna' flow baby... Thanks for the video!
Awesome! I just ordered my first mace, a nice looking 3kg, 102 cm steel mace from Steel Mace in Australia. Can't wait for it to arrive and start getting into this type of training!! 💪😄
Thank you so much for your thoughts and advice! I just got a 10lb mace, and am not too upset they didn't have the 20, I'm new to mace/clubs and almost made the mistake of "I can lift that easy"😂 Looking forward to learning as much as I can from you(and the community)
Good video.. that is why I love my Adex Mace, it is adjustable from 6 pounds to 30 pounds (2.72 to 13.6 Kg)! Without having to have a room full of different maces great space saver, they also have an attachment that can max it out at 50 pounds or 22.68 Kg, which I am looking forward too getting but as you are saying 30 pounds in 360s is allot of weight.
Moving the implement with control at all points will kill the notion of starting heavy. Slowing down and smoothing out from the start has served me well over time.
Thanks for all the info, big help! I started with the 10 pounder and the 15 is waiting for me. Today i bought 8 three inch washers with a 1.5 inch whole, these fit perfectly over the handle. I will lock them in with round coller and increase the weight 2.5 pounds up to 12.5 pounds. After a short time I will be ready for the 15 pounder, then 17.5, then a 20 pounder. This should work out well approaching it at a gradient. Ram Ram!
I bought a 5lb mace bell, but I’m near 67 years old and haven’t worked out in years. It’s a good weight for me just to get use to the movements. I intend to get heavier mace bells.
Just went to the gym today and threw around a 15kg barbell to try this. Seems simple enough. Then grabbed a 10kg barbell to do one straight hand lift above head. I think I’ll put a few vids up online doing this stuff as well.
I’ve ordered a 6kg mace as my first mace. I’ve no experience with the movements yet but have been doing sledgehammer workouts for a while. Your videos are very helpful and hope I make good use of my mace
Thanks for the video. It really gave me some insight as to how heavy the weight can be the lower you go to the very bottom of the mace It looks like a very good workout for the upper body primarily your back and your shoulders, which is what I’m trying to go for so I think I’ll take your advice and I’ll start off with the 10lbs mace because I can see how much of a struggle it could be going with a higher weight without any experience. 👍
I was a gym guy for years so I thought I was reasonably strong. I started with a 6 kg and i found that very challenging. When I could do 100 continuous reps with a 360 it was only then I went to an 8 kg and that too was very challenging. 2 kg jump I find is a very significant increase.
I decided to actually start working out at home due to the whole corona situation. I could only get a 6kg kettlebell to start with, and that instantly felt too light. So my first macebell was a 7.5kg one, because the 6kg kettlebell was way too light so surely a 7.5kg mace would be fine... and yeah, that went all Surprised Pikachu. Now I have a 4kg one that's great to learn the forms. Going to keep at it for a while yet and then maybe get a 6kg one.
Seen plenty of your videos I love especially the ones when you are India , Today is July 8 2021 and I'm waiting for my steel mace from Amazon 7lbs my shoulder and wrist are really banged up ,though being my self Mexican and living in the USA I got to play high school American football and 4 years of Junior college my shoulders are really best up so I figure with the Indian clubs and the steel mace it should be a great combination to get my upper body joints back in to better shape , and thank you for this great video Salutations from San Diego CA.
Bought an 8kg to start and it took me a few weeks to be able to swing it 10 to 2 (choked up on the handle). Should've listened to you and bought a 6kg! 4kg is nice and easy to handle, so I know I'll work up to the 8 in no time. Excellent vid!
Very helpful video. 2 weeks ago I was searching some information about it and I didn't find. I went simply to the shop and tested it on the spot. I have bought 8 kg one, which at the beginning seemed to be to heavy but now is ok. The problem is a coarse handle, it bruises my hands, so I have to keep it not at the end, but a bit lower, where the steel is slick. All the best
I think 10lb is a solid starting weight for a man. If you're a child or a woman, you can think about lighter. But if you go too light, you don't really feel the reality of the mace. I think it's nice to have it heavy enough that you feel like you need to adopt good form, like it forces you to think about technique. Although, clearly not so heavy that you hurt yourself because it's beyond your ability to control. For most men, I think that means 10lbs is the sweet spot, unless you're just terribly out of shape to the point doing basic chores around the house is likely to cause to you strain a muscle. If you're in that sort of shape, then stepping down might be a good idea.
I think I could work with a 15 pound mace. I have years of experience splitting wood with an axe, and to be able to split for long hours you get the flow quite similar to this. Chopping with straight brute strength wears you out so fast.
Since the mace swinging can be seen as kind of circular motion, then I think the actual quantity difference between 4kg and 8kg mace should be 64 - 16 = 48 rather than 8 - 4 = 4 linearly
Whoever plans to do this, please, go with light weight first, there's no ego here! I am a heavy lifter myself but when I started using Macebells I was like whoa, whoa, whoa, careful first... it's a really fun training equipment that I wholeheartedly recommend to use. Your shoulders will thank you for it!
Yep, if my weight training has taught me anything it's to always start light with new exercises!! And with that in mind I have ordered a 3kg mace to start with, and then once I am proficient with it and have learned good form then I will progress to higher weights.
I’ve never done a macebell workout. I’m generally just into strength training/powerlifting type exercises. How does this differ from a traditional bench/squat/deadlift/shoulder press workout? Forgive me if it should be obvious to me. Is this truly a full body workout? Paired with sledge type workouts could this be a functional replacement to standard weightlifting?
@@gunney74 Normal 360 swinging works your core, back, shoulders, arms. It helps you keep your shoulder joints healthy and due to its movement pattern really helps with optimal blood flow. I got a 10 lb Onnit macebell/gada, took me four months to swing it comfortably with two hands, and learning how to do it with one hand. I'm thinking of getting a mugdar or a pair of jori and asking the same questions on an ideal starting weight.
I've been Farmer Carrying my kettlebells 1.5 miles round trip to the park, with swings, squats, and presses while there. I'm thinking the 10 pound mace can be strapped to the top tube of my bicycle for my rides to and from the beach where I do yoga. Thanks for your recommendations.
This is a great explanation so we don't waste money on something we don't need just yet. How about just buying an adjustable mace- something that starts about 10lb all the way up to 30+lb fully loaded? Pros and con's?
I had to make me an 18 kg macebell. But I started at 6 kg, which was a weight I am used to because a sledge hammer weights as much and I work demolition. I think for an average man 4 kg for the start is totally ok.
Thanks for the information. In my country it is very difficult to get one of these, do you think I can train with a classic sledge hammer? At the hardware store I can get some 8-pound ones with a fiberglass handle, it's a good weight to start with, right?
BTW, what do you think of mace lengths? My first 7.5kg one (that ended up too heavy to start with) is 105cm, while the 4kg one is 130cm. I feel the longer one would get in the way a bit too much when I start trying flows.
Hello my friend, great stuff! I was wondering: partially due to cost, I bought a padded solid steel bar rather than a macebell. This bar is 4.5kg and 1.2m long. When I eventually buy a mace, do you think 8kg would be a good option for me? Thank you!
Question please: I am a 5'3" female Macebell Beginner. Would a 7lb 30.7" mace work for me because of my height?..... I just read some comments and got my answer. I thought height would make a difference; I'm thinking I may not be fit enough or young to try the macebell. (?)
I just want a macebell to do tire slams..should i get sledge hammer instead? I Had a sledge hammer before so I know how to swing it. Iam wondering if is the same for the macebell when hitting tire. What weight should I get for a fit 49 year old male and a 49 year old female? Thank u By the way I don't think I will be using mace bell for anything else other than hitting tire.
Ram ram. I am usi g a club now. Can you please comment along the samelines? And how to incorporate a club or mace into traditional dumbell or barbwll routine?
Why not move hands closer to the head when learning a new move? Reduce leverage and make it feel lighter until you can move hands down to the end of the bar? Thanks for sharing these vids, Indian traditional wrestling and training gets way too little shine outside India! Thanks for bringing it more exposure!
So I’m considering buying one of these and don’t want to buy multiple could you not say start further up the handle as most of this workout seems to invoke physics and then Just work you’re way down the handle?
I didn't found the answear about the difference between macebell flow (with small head) and macebell tournament (with a big head) I can imagine tournament is harder to balance and flow. But what are the pros and cons of both ones? I already have 4kg flow and I'm not sure which one now I should get. 8kg/10kg flow or 8kg tournament.
Loving i made my own clubs wothwood hesvy ss hell and i have a 8 poindslwdge thsy maye is 12 pound causd off wood and the wedge it top to prevent the head from comming off Is xun training
I started out my journey by foolishly buying a 14kg thinking I could handle it....I soon backtracked and also ordered a 6kg, that I COULD handle, I now have a 10kg that I can just about swing while gripping halfway up, so for me at least, 4kg increments arent impossible...the 14 will require some work tho.
Don't go too heavy! I decided on a 10lb to start, and it wore me out for the first two months. Shoulders and back especially - getting worked in a whole different way. The mace weight is not at all comparable to a bench or deadlift.

Can I start with a regular wood handle and iron top mace from a hardware store?
Greetings from Mexico.
Great content!
Hello my friend, great stuff! I was wondering: partially due to cost, I bought a padded solid steel bar rather than a macebell. This bar is 4.5kg and 1.2m long. When I eventually buy a mace, do you think 8kg would be a good option for me?
Thank you!
I do 360s with 15 lb kettlebell so I ordered a 20 lb macebell. It's way to heavy, so I just ordered a 10 lb. Wish I had seen this first
Thank you
Question please:
I am a 5'3" female Macebell Beginner. Would a 7lb 30.7" mace work for me because of my height?..... I just read some comments and got my answer. I thought height would make a difference; I'm thinking I may not be fit enough or young to try the macebell. (?)
I have a 44 inch 25 lbs maceball and it works. Just beware you don't hit anything when you are swing.
Good Stuff and Ask More Questions.
Got the information, thanks
Thank you 🙏🏼
I just want a macebell to do tire slams..should i get sledge hammer instead? I Had a sledge hammer before so I know how to swing it. Iam wondering if is the same for the macebell when hitting tire. What weight should I get for a fit 49 year old male and a 49 year old female? Thank u
By the way I don't think I will be using mace bell for anything else other than hitting tire.
Hi, I use a 5kg mugdar weight (single-handed) very comfortably. What would be an appropriate weight for a gada/mace bell?
Great video thanks
Good stuff, thank you.
Ram ram. I am usi g a club now. Can you please comment along the samelines? And how to incorporate a club or mace into traditional dumbell or barbwll routine?
Ram ram..made my own mace using a barbell
from where can we buy a mace??
That drum fill 😂
Oki, im buying a 6 and 8 kg! It wasn't a mace, but a sledge. Does it matter ?
Why not move hands closer to the head when learning a new move? Reduce leverage and make it feel lighter until you can move hands down to the end of the bar?
Thanks for sharing these vids, Indian traditional wrestling and training gets way too little shine outside India! Thanks for bringing it more exposure!
That is of course the first thing you should do when starting to swing behind your back, but still the weight recommendations are the same ;)
So I’m considering buying one of these and don’t want to buy multiple could you not say start further up the handle as most of this workout seems to invoke physics and then Just work you’re way down the handle?
I didn't found the answear about the difference between macebell flow (with small head) and macebell tournament (with a big head) I can imagine tournament is harder to balance and flow. But what are the pros and cons of both ones?
I already have 4kg flow and I'm not sure which one now I should get. 8kg/10kg flow or 8kg tournament.
Good stuff
Loving i made my own clubs wothwood hesvy ss hell and i have a 8 poindslwdge thsy maye is 12 pound causd off wood and the wedge it top to prevent the head from comming off

Excellent explanation and demo. Thanks!
Useful !
I've found that buying sledgehammers is cost effective. Got a 10lb and a 16lb. Great starting weights.
Ram Ram Flying dutch how r u
Ram Ram! Doing fine thanks
Great vid which brand mace would you recommend 👊
Onnit makes some that look great. That's the brand I'm considering.
Where we have to buy... Tell me is there any merce supplier detail's then we can buy from them
who has lumbar disc herniation can do this exercise? and if so, how many kilos to start? Thanks!!
where is this filmed mr dutchman sir? big fan !
Amsterdam!

Is zo ene van 2 of 4kg niet goed om je pols te trainen?om je polsen sterker te maken?
Don't go too heavy! I decided on a 10lb to start, and it wore me out for the first two months. Shoulders and back especially - getting worked in a whole different way. The mace weight is not at all comparable to a bench or deadlift.
