Food food everywhere. Ubud, Bali.

- Today my walk around Ubud finds me surrounded by food.
My breakfast stop is with a street vendor preparing sate where I ask him what time his day starts and finishes, how long he's been at this spot, and then I sit and try his sate on the steps of a shop.
Next I talk to a warung owner named made who explains a little of her life in her very popular warung that has a huge range of food to choose from. Made tells me what time she starts and finishes, who helps her, and what she has to offer.
I meet a woman delivering onions to the warung and also chat with her also.
Taking a small path off the main road I come across a sculpture which is magnificent and bizarr. It's a sculpture of a bird eating a fish being attacked by a crab while ]wrestling a lobster. a frog watches from nearby. it's just brilliant!

Haha blackbird singing in the dead of night...❤
And a very bad version of it.:) Thanks for dropping by, Innocent.
Another great video Wayne
Hey Steven. Thanks, I appreciate it.
You put a smile on my face every day with your sincere way of showing the true and best way to emerge in the balinese life. The best sate ive eaten was from an old lady sitting in the gutter faning the hot coals in sanur to produce sate babi and saucs kecang that was to die for. Keep up the good work mate 😊
That means a lot, Steven, thank you.
Looked 5 star meal to me haha I'll never understand people that stay in all inclusive resorts to never leave them and stuff their pie holes with what they get. That bird statue was a great find, love to find stuff like that randomly walking around.
Hey bluefish. Yeah, getting out and wandering around is a much more rewarding experience to have if you ask me. And the statue is almost completely out of site which makes you think few people know it's there which makes it a little more enjoyable. Cheers.
👌👌👌👌👌👌
Thanks, eril.
A new place which I’ve become actually obsessed with is Pizza Cult in Ubud. Amazing food, great service, such a cute venue and really affordable. Also a great place to bring your laptop and work from!
Hey rubyeats. Thanks a lot for the heads up on an affordable place to eat and work. Cheers.
Semangat terus Pak
Terima kasih, Bona.
Thanks
John, that's really generous of you to contribute in such a way. Thank you!
Great videos
That's really generous of you, Veronica. Thank you.
Wish i could speak as good bahasa as you, is a credit to you and means alot to the local people, cheers.
Hi Jonesy. It's not very good, it's actually quite bad, but the locals do seem to appreciate the effort - it gives them a bit of a laugh. :) Good to see you.
Your indo vocabul;ary getting pretty good mate, and it looks like you got the numbers as well, they seem to understand you you so you are effectively communicating, despite what some people claim Indo is actually a difficult language for us Australians because they put the emphasis on the end of words rather then Australians who tend to cut off the last bit of our words and the emphasis at the beginning.. And they really appreciate a foreigner who tries the language because most dont and expect them to speak english, so you shouldnt be embarrassed by any means. Anyway, just a couple of tips if I may, the "a" in indonesian is always pronounced "uh", and clearly emphasise the last part of the word. But enjoying your videos, if you like street food then try Java or Sumatra next maybe.
Appreciate the tips as always, ian - thanks. I fully understand my Indonesian is cumbersome and that I have less than a basic grasp, however, you touch on a really important aspect to it - people really appreciate the effort in the trying and as a consequence warm to you. I started to wonder why my portions of food started increasing. :) Indonesia's a big place with lots to explore. Thanks Ian.
@@fiascodagama1Believe me Wayne ur Indo is very good AND you usually have lightning fast response… as a basic Indo speaker my response is jilted because I overthink … this annoys me somewhat, I need more courage with the practice… anyways Wayne makasi banyak 🙏
Wow-memories came flooding back to me when I saw your satays. I had stayed out all night and by sunrise hadn't eaten. Sat down outside an Indomaret with my local friends and ate the best satay I have ever had.
Your videos are informative and entertaining. Kasih banyak Wayne 🙏🙏
Hi Julia. Where would we be without our Indomarets? :) They have come to our rescue at all hours. Good to see you.
It's so great that you can speak some Indonesian when interacting with locals - fantastic!
It makes it a lot of fun, Leannes. People kind of open up to you a little bit as well. Cheers.
When I lived in Kota Kinabalu we had a satay eating competition. I won eating 35.
Ha! nice one. That's a lot of satay! I have a love of it myself but not sure I could put away thirty five. :)
Wow you really enjoy the food, l don’t eat those sticks in Bali bc l went to a cooking lesson once and l didn’t like the way we had to massage the meat in our hands the squeeze it onto the sticks, hate to know who does that job fir the street food 🫣
Street food can present some problems occasionally but I haven't had any issues for a long time.
Chicken satay is one of my favourites.
Yeah, it's prettyb hard to beat isn't it, philip?
Only a bule would sit down on the ground and eat off the sidewalk ,love the music, Your I bahasa indonesia is very good well done Nyoman
Hi foolishness. I'll sit anywhere to eat good food. :) Thanks for the bahasa Indonesia compliment, I constantly feel completely useless at it. Good to see you.
The best way to learn the languange is speaking with the natives.
Hi ferry. I think I have to agree - even if it can be a bit embarrassing. :) Thanks for saying hi.
Yummo ,on the satay Wayne.
So good, Chris. Going to have to learn how to cook it for you guys.
Really enjoy this video - we are in Bali 4 - 5 times a year and always seeking out authentic warungs to eat at - favourite in sanur is warung odah Perak that has the best nasi campur for about 20000 idr! My friends who also visit Bali talk about eating at large western resorts and wouldn’t dream of eating at a warung in a gang and certainly would never consider street food - well I think they are missing the gold of the people and the authentic food.
Btw- blackbird is difficult to play you did well 😊
Hi Steven. i definitely understand how people who are on their annual holiday want to enjoy nice things and relax in pleasant surrounds and, well, spoil themselves. But there's an atmosphere and engagement you have when eating locally that can't be had when at tourist restaurants - you've obviously discovered this yourself. We'll just have to suffer with it ourselves. :) I'm blaming my poor rendition of Blackbird on the guitar, Steven, not my peerless expertise on the instrument. LOL
That's sate Madura, most popular chicken sate in Indonesia. Better served with lontong(steam rice in banana leaf), cut chilli and cut raw shallots.
Izzah, that sounds like a really nice way to eat sate. Thanks.
Did it say Petulu at the bird statue? Then it's a heron. I found this: "The Cranes of Petulu Bali
A strange, natural phenomenon occurs each evening in the village of Petulu. Thousands of white herons arrive here around 6:00 pm to roost for the night before flying off again in the morning. The birds first began coming here after a communist massacre in 1965." That last sentence is very intriguing.
I didn't see anything written on the statue, but that's a really interesting find, ninettemurk. I just read the birds apparently represent the souls of those killed in the massacre. interesting stuff - thanks!
@@fiascodagama1 The only negative thing being that the entire region is covered in white bird poo ;-)
Enlightening videos. Thanks. May I ask, what is the location of the sate seller?
Hi, mohdriza. He's toward the end of Jalan Raya (The main road that runs past the palace and central markets) before you get to the big statue on the left hand side. he sets up out the front of an Indomaret convenience store. Thank you.
It's here

You could even see the satay man
Great content love seeing the real Bali. You are a great communicator, I can’t wait to get back to Bali!
@@Thingswedo1 Hi PlaceWeGO, thanks so much for the kind words. I sure do understand your wanting to get back here. Cheers.
@@fiascodagama1Thanks for your quick reply. Will swing by the next time I'm in Ubud. Take care.
10 pieces for 10k rupiah ? Whttt, that's lk less than 1 Australian buck, Anyway in Jakarta or other cities 10 pieces are 2 or 3 bucks ,, while in US 10 pieces could cost you like 10 to 15 bucks
Hi AnDi. Yes, it's pretty good value it has to be said. I find Ubud to be pretty good value, and there's no comparison to costs at home, that's for sure. thanks for dropping by. Cheers.
Good vid mate. But your indonesian is a bit rough haha😂
Hi travelrat.Thanks. Only way to get better at it is to try, I guess - and It makes for a bit of a laugh for the locals.. :) Hopefully the embarrassment won't last for too long. Thanks for dropping by.
Tasty sate I am sure. So you got used to balinese germs and bugs so far? No diarrhea for you, mate?
Hi rufftoj. Very tasty local sate. Very rarely I might get a rushed trip to the toilet but the last time must have been a couple of years ago.
@fiascodagama1 I guess you have blended in very nicely. Have fun, mate. I love your videos. Keep them coming.
@@rufftoj Really kind of you, rufftoj.
You will find that eating at the street stalls or khaki lima as they sometimes call them is far more sanitary because they prepare it right in front of people. Its when you got a restaurant there you taking a chance because they prepare it out the back.
@@ian-f5f Hi ian. i agree. While I think things have improved in recent times, some of my worst eating experiences have been in tourist restaurants. Good to see you.
