- Split Enz's fifth album True Colours was released in 1980, with the single I Got You going to number one in both Australia and New Zealand. The album also topped the charts on both side of the Tasman, with the record being released in a multitude of cover colour combinations. The Kiwi band's line-up during the True Colours era featured Tim Finn, Neil Finn, Eddie Rayner, Nigel Griggs, Malcolm Green and Noel Crombie.
True Colours celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020.

In my humble opinion, this is one of the greatest love songs of all time.
❤❤❤
one of the most underrated songs and most people don't see the brilliance in it.
Agreed. Except that it's actually about the friendship breakup of Tim Finn and his friend and ex fellow band-mate Phil Judd.
@@BeatriceCheer He must have loved him somewhat.
When youre here im nowhere. Says it.
One of the most underrated bands I've ever heard...it's criminal.
No, they were not. The important people in the world love know and love split enz.
Pop perfection
Life is no fun when you're haunted by the the things you feel..... . It's a shame it took me decades to work out, but I figured it out so better late than never.
Another pointless "underrated" comment on You Tube
Art rock rocks
Tim did a great job on this, but please, let's not forget Eddie Rayner's magnificent piano/keyboards/orchestration of this song. It's all that, for me, which gives it its impact.
Correct
I kinda wish they got a real string section for this.
Whimsy and humor, two words that often cross my mind when listening to Eddie. He's necessary to the sound and has a unique style. And is capable of (playing) just about anything.
Straight up
Tim Finn if you are reading this, you are a great singer and composer. This American has loved you for decades
You but. Tum Funn ez jerst uncrudable at hus craft.
@@raccuia1don't drink your lunch.
@@lefkytheshin was there a joke in there? Am I missing something?
@@raccuia1apparently.
Phonetically spelt out in a Kiwi accent, eg. fush and chups instead of fish and chips...@@raccuia1
One of these days, Split Enz songs will start appearing all over Netflix show soundtracks and they will be discovered by a whole new generation. That or TikTokers will. Caught my teen daughters walking around singing an old Kate Bush song recently, and they've never even heard of her.
Dirty creatures!! 😊
Uu
tiktokers will only know the chorus of one song
Some will act as if they’re the first to discover, fully appreciate and understand it. Every generation has done that. If it opens up kids ears to old gems, well good luck to em I guess, some will go down the rabbit hole and get right into it.
6 months in a leaky boatttt
Tim's voice is perfect for this song. Just enough heartbreak in it!
The heartbreak is real. It’s about Phil Judd.
Or Greta Scachi. If you don't know who she is, you are really dumb..
How this guy isn't more famous or up there with elton john, stevie wonder or elvis is a mystery. His voice is sublime and this song just showcases it. Kiwi Legend!
Paul McCartney is a fan.
I totally agree from the other side of the Tasman sea, stand proud as a Kiwi knowing the best ever male voice from the Tasman comes from New Zealand.
@@michellewinter354 Paul would know as well, Split Enz will be the most underrated band in history.
The voice is Tim Finn, I think the songwriter was Neil Finn, who later formed Crowded House without his brother Tim.
Aussie / Kiwi music industry compared to American entertainment industrial complex. Thankfully, things have changed.
Awesome composer .....Elegant piece ... Beautiful Ballad ❤❤❤❤❤
Just a great song from a great band!!
That violin sweep into the chorus is why he's a musical genius
Eddie Rayner, who did the orchestration? Indeed he was.
And the exclusion of it after the solo. Eddie Rayner is a real genius
It's gorgeous, pulls everything together in an exquisitely mawkish way
I agree. Neil uses strings in the same way too.
One of the most emotionally painful and haunting songs set to sweeping and beautiful music EVER written! I LOVE IT!
That freakin piano! It emotionally and physically moves me!
Tim Finn's voice is sublime ❤ And what a beautiful lyricist. I was 12 yrs old when this album was released in Oz and it blew my mind. How blessed was I to be a teenager in the 80s ❤❤❤
I went to NZ and Australia in one summer when I was 12 or 13. I got really sick on the plane trip from NZ to OZ. That didn't stop me from enjoying Australia. I bit as many Marsupials as would get close enough. That's why you have HPV there.
Piano on this wonderful song is sublime
Even at the age of 60 I still cry when I hear this song
Never worry about time, it only means something when you understand things. Physical age is a shit, but really, you never change, you just grow. x
I lived that song, heart destroyed, wondered and fretted what to do if we ran into each other on the streets, moved to another city, ... but I was the one who went through the devastation, not her.
Me too. I am also 60 yrs
One of the most brilliant breakup songs of all time. Comedic yet earnest and heartfelt, it's everything.
Of
One of the most beautiful songs ever sung. Loved it in the 80's. Something never to be forgotten.
Beautiful , classic song .❤
Simply sublime. I bought the Laser Etched Vinyl of True Colours and played it to death. Greetings from 2024. Split Enz Rule 😎❤️
This was filmed at Ripponlea (National Trust Estate) in Melbourne …. My mum was Manager of Ripponlea at the time and I watched the filming in the ballroom. She had to stay with them overnight whilst filming & she used to say how “she spent the night with Split Enz”…. Lovely memory.
Beautiful vocals - don’t get why there aren’t millions of thumbs up 👍
Best.band ever
March 2024. Thank you Split Enz. Thank you Tim.
June now
August 2024 and still great
September 2024 and it's still a masterpiece.
Underrated brilliance.
Just became aware of this hauntingly beautiful song this year 2020 while listening to split enz station on pandora. I always thought it was Neil singing. I can't get it out of my head, I love everything about it!💗💗💗💗😍
Tim’s voice is otherworldly, there is something about it that catches you in the solar plexus, and grips your heart. Tim is really special. I don’t think that he ever had the success that he deserved.
I like both Tim’s and Neals voice (brothers) Split enz and Crowded House.
I thought Neil sang everything! I never saw any videos of Split Enz and then Crowded House came out and I found out it was Neil's group after Split Enz. I'm glad I found these videos!
@@thanksfernuthin Neil didn’t join split enz until after their first two albums.
@@JefAlanLong That's fine. Never heard of Split Enz until that album. They weren't a big deal in the states. Just letting people know how little someone might know back then. No internet. No cable (where I lived).
This has so much emotion to it - very powerful. And as ever, Eddie Raynor is sublime on piano. And I wish I could sing like this!
I was lucky enough to see the enz in 1976 at Portsmouth guildhall. Brilliant. Have been a fan ever since.
Exquisite and timeless. Sad for the world that this doesn't have 2 billion views.
This song and performance digs right into your very bones. What a masterpiece.
Tears in my eyes... I know this song for so long now and it’s truly about me. Life is so wonderful when you live it, I’m thankful.
It’s about Phil Judd.
Long time ago I buy a LP from split enz in Auckland. I'M happy to listen this music. ❤❤😂😂 I'm from Germany and traveled through NZ by bike. It was the best time of my life 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I fell in love with this song as a very young teen when i saw them do it flawlessly live on a late night show called FRIDAYS in eary 80's. As an entertainer/musician/writer,i am shocked and actually touched that so many of you love and appreciate this song. It definitely is a hauntingly captivating melody.
True Colours - one the best albums ever released in Australia.
There is a uniqueness to Spit Enz that is difficult to quantify simply…simply put they were awesome theatrically lyrically and sonically.
They interest me greatly…. You have this song…..then it devolves into crowded house, where it sounds like a back yard garage jam, with the same quality and cheap, barely scratching the surface harmonies…. What went wrong ..
A very powerful an emotional song from Split Enz. It strikes deep into the soul. I am so glad Neil Finn was able to continue the band after Tim's departure.
Have you heard of crowded house ,that was Neil's band,,split enz was always tim at its core.
Listening to this, I’m 17 again, heading off to America for a year on exchange, scared out of my wits, and armed with my copy of True Colours, to show those Texans what real music sounds like.
It's hauntingly brilliant!
Their Masterpiece which is so Beautiful. The only complaint is that it has to end.
Saw Split Enz live in the early 80s. They were as good live as in their clips. Amazing talent.
Just a few nights ago, watching Tim Finn singing this over piano with his daughter at the Sydney Opera House..pure magic. Songwriting and performing arts at its best❤
Growning up in New Zealand Listing to your Music has left lots of memories in My life. 1994 I watched you live in Sydney in a Taven on Parramatta Rd, The best thing was going back stage meeting you, on your break, your back up singer was James he was a friend of the family. Who done a lot of work with Tina arena and hey hey its Saturday , In saying that Split Enz were awesome!
Split Enz, such a great band. This album is still fantastic to listen to from start to finish. Such a range of music. This song is so beautiful.
Great memory from my childhood living in New Zealand. Split Enz were very popular to New Zealanders ❤
How there aren't 1 billion views for this song is beyond comprehension. Magnificent in every way.
In my egotistical opinion, this is one of the greatest love songs of all time.
Such a beautiful melody
I'm almost sorry this tune has a video...
The images are new-wave dated, but the music, and the sentiment of the lyric, are timeless:
"I fall apart when you're around
When you're here, I'm nowhere
I can't pretend that I'm not down
I show it, I know it
I've been a fool - more than once, more than twice
I'm gonna move to a new town where the people are nice
I hope I never, I hope I never have to sigh again
I hope I never, I hope I never have to cry again
I still want to beam and smile
Happiness is back in style yeah
I hope I never, I hope I never have to see you again
Again, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
It should be possible I know
To see you without stress
But I can see I'll have to go
I'm changing my address
My urge to cry I have failed to conceal
Life - it's no fun when you're hunted by the things that you feel
I hope I never, I hope I never have to cry again
I hope I never, I hope I never have to sigh again
I'm for living while you can
I'm an optimistic man
I hope I never, I hope I never have to see you again
Again, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
I hope I never
I hope I never
I hope I never, never, never, never, never...
Ooh
I hope I never, I hope I never have to see you again"
(We've all been there, right?)
Although Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," about 4 years later, deals with the exact same subject, this song is musically and lyrically superior to it in every way...
...and this vocal performance, compared to Sinead's?
FUHGEDDABOUDIT.
I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written.
I remember buying True Colours after hearing Shark Attack and falling in love with the whole record.
Finally seeing the band at the old Ritz in NYC I was not disappointed; I could see and hear that the skills heard on the record were "real".
As the decades have passed since then, of course, other music and artists pushed Split Enz back into memory; but somehow, this song stayed in my head all this time.
Even if I hadn't listened to the record for years, I'd hear this song in my head at least once a week, if not every day.
It somehow touches something very personal inside me on an emotional level, whilst simultaneously stimulating my intellect on a musical level (as a musician myself).
It has a certain "intrigue" inside of it.
To me it's sheer genius in the simplest terms; which is how genius is best expressed.
It's been a great comfort to me all these years, and I thank Tim and everyone involved for making it part of my perception of reality.
Truly.
How to time travel in one easy lesson. Load up I Hope I Never, hear the first note and bang I’m 17 and it’s 1980 just like that....amazing. Every little thing comes back.
Incredible song.
Thank you, CJNE 94.7 in Nipawin for making me aware of it. Never got enough air play in north America, compared with "I got you" and "One step ahead"... (also great songs), but this one has to be the best one from Split Enz, in my opinion.
Tim Finn sings so beautifully on this and looks so young and pretty in the video.
This song is perfect on the movie Puberty Blues.
Fully
Yea but there is a women singing it what’s her name ?
@@lachlansimmons2668 it was Sharon O'Neill
Absolutely. Saw it at the cinema back in 82 .
God that's beautiful. Those soaring vocals rip my guts out
I think Tim says the word "never" 26 times continuously at the end of the song equals goosebumps
Incredibly touching. Brings tears to my eyes thinking about that special person I lost.
Hugs 🫂
OH the memories this song brings back, Oh Tony, I hope we are reunited on the other side, you said you would wait for me. xx
This guy is brilliant . Definitely should be up there with the all time greats
😭Hauntingly beautiful and sung with such emotion by Tim. Eddie's deft piano playing falls like rain on a lonely, stormy night. I miss you so much HP....
I secretly loved Split Enz back in the day, but it was uncool to tell that to my metalhead friends. Hearing this track, so many years later, only proves it to be a genuine evergreen. What songwriting, and what vocals!
One of my favourite songs of all time... Stunning work Tim!
I really want to say just how much I appreciate this song for the brilliance that it is! I don't want recognition but as time goes on, I must say that this song is brilliant in every way shape and form. Congratulation Neil and Tim for the fantastic contribution you guys have made to music 😍

Underrated Comment
My name is Brandon Leon
I brought Split Enz to the attention of record producer David Tickle
Together we produced I See Red and Next Exit.
Then David took them to Australia where they recorded True Colours.
The rest as they say is History!!!
Thank you Tim Finn for playing this live at the Big Red Bash Simpson Desert last month, you absolutely made my day 💕 Its my favourite Split Enz song along with Message to my Girl.
just wonderful
Those Finn brothers....so talented.
There are songs like Bohemian Rhapsody & then there is this beauty.... we love it. Everybody shouldm.
Massively and unduly underrated outside of NZ and Australia. Gorgeous songwriting, playing and arranging. I had True Colours on lazer etched vinyl, but if it had been pressed in cardboard it would've sounded out of this world. I Got You hit the charts in the uk, but it was I Hope I Never that broke me up. Still does.
Something about songs that go beyond the 3 minute radio edit. I was feeling this 40 years after its release.
He is to me, and his brother Neil, I'm Australian and my husband was kiwi, the most beautiful music I know
I hope I never... [fill in the blanks]. The vocals on this make me wanna cry and ram my head sweetly into my cat's forehead, just to get them to purr. This songs works for so many things!/
A masterpiece.
underated split enz song still sounds good in 2023 😊❤👍
I agree with you because I am a qualified lesbian
Love this song.... it's very emotional and so often true of a few relationships I once had. Though it's sad to think people can relate to this in real life, I admit I have sung it about several people through the years and still find myself singing it around the house now and then!! LOL. ❣
A magnificent song, from a truly magnificent music artist and singer..
You just wonder what the fortunes of bands like SE would have been like if they were given significant air time on commercial US radio back in the day?..
Totally agree.
A friend told me that Paul McCartney was once asked how he felt about being the greatest songwriter,
apparently he replied
"...Ask Neil Finn."
They got recognition for Don't dream it's over, but that's not their best song,
even so, i don't think the guys measured themselves by US success thankfully.
Nearly 40 years since I last heard this song, and I'm amazed and heartened that I remember the tune and every word.
Love it.
Split Enz were absolute creators . Tim is a Genius at so many types of Song characters, but He Masters these thematic Masterpieces such as this.
I hope I never has been a top 5 FAV of mine for 30 years. It still is !!!

What a voice!!! I loved this song when it came out and still do. Split enz...fantastic!
It is a beautiful song, I loved it so much and I always enjoy everytime I play it.
Bought this album when it was released for another song. This is appropriate for many of us at some point!

This is a MASTER PIECE
I always remember the first time i heard true colours it was just like a total fresh sound and instant hit back then…number one party album of early eighties
That first chord on Poor Boy just takes me RIGHT there.
