They were supposed to stop in Bayfield but the weather prevented it, the passengers missed one of the most beautiful spots in the country. I bet they were brokenhearted.
This is an exciting time for residents of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway on both sides of the border! Americans and Canadians from Montreal, Toronto, Thunder Bay, Duluth, Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, can all be PROUD! Never before has a luxury cruise ship of this MAGNITUDE plied our waters. Of course there were vessels in the past that were billed as "cruise ships" but in reality were just oversized houseboat's. The Octantis is a world class expedition vessel that cost a quarter of a billion dollars to build. It is as much at home exploring the Great Lakes as it is at home exploring the South Pole with it's two on board submarines. Don't confuse this cruise ship with the cruise ships that ply the Caribbean. This vessel is on an entirely different level in terms of luxury and exclusivity. Next year Octantis will be joined by a sister ship increasing the Great Lakes region as a MAJOR tourist destination that we can all be proud of!
I kayaked around her when she was in Toronto about a month ago. Lovely looking ship but those cruises are crazy expensive. Like starting at $8000 per person, one way from Cleveland to Toronto. For that kinda money I could spend a month in Italy.
I doubt very much it is $8000 one way from Cleveland to Toronto. Look on a map the locations of those two cities. I looked on Viking website and they have a cruise in June going from Milwaukee to Thunder Bay Canada, 7 nights for $7000
@@FumariVI they are auxiliary propellers mounted in the bow to give sideways thrust. See the circles with the crosses in them on the side of the ship? That's where they are. They allow the ship to turn much easier and in a shorter distance. Sometime they are fitted at the rear as well (stern thrusters) and ships can turn in their own length, very handy in confined locations!
@@ladyflimflam you may be correct... I find it strange that the fog horn was only one blast. I thought I read somewhere that a foghorn is rhythmic, meaning a horn every X seconds/minutes. Shrugging over here🤷♂️
@@SoloTwo42 you're probably right, the way I saw it, this morning, it seems like there were a few different views of the same horn blast. Regardless, the departure was way better than the arrival, in my mind anyway. 😉
Makes me tear up with the passengers out because it's been 110 years since titanic sank, 30 years ago in 1992 boblo closed, and over 60 years ago the classic passenger ships that sailed the lakes were gone and the last retired when mackinaw bridge opened. Just chilling we have recreated history even back in 2013.
@@jonathanellsworth21 I hope you're right. I want to sail the Great Lakes but if I can't sit on my balcony with a drink in my hand and enjoy the view......that would be a deal-breaker.
I saw them come in so a much clearer departure. I wonder what the passengers did during their time there in the fog. But I guess they aren't on that cruise for the hot weather.
I was there watching her depart .... So beautiful !! ❤️
I liked how the passengers were on the bow at the canal and waved to everyone.
Something that lacks these days when the ocean liners went away.
Big difference from it's arrival... That was some crazy fog... thanks for vids

Part of me wants Duluth to stay the same...small town lovely.
Must be nice to toss 6 grand on a cruise
I suppose you would be happy with the return of feudalism, such is your deference to those with wealth.
Love the dreadnaught style bow, better looking than most cruise ships.
Vikings are beauties
Love the video. That is such a cool vessel. Thanks for sharing.
Hello from Kansas! Good looking boat!
Wow, what a pretty ship/boat. Unusual to see a cruise ship come through, mostly bulk carriers
I kayaked around her when she was in Toronto about a month ago. Lovely looking ship but those cruises are crazy expensive. Like starting at $8000 per person, one way from Cleveland to Toronto. For that kinda money I could spend a month in Italy.
Agreed!
67 day cruise to South America $45,000. Wow!
You’re probably far less likely to get mugged on the ship.

when you go to Italy, be sure to visit Pompei and the American cemetery in Florence. Absolutely awesome.
I like her oddly shaped bow, gives her character
Kinda shaped like a WW1 battleship's bow.
Three bow thrusters. They arrived with passengers earlier and are now heading to Burns harbor with iron ore. : )
What is a bow thruster?

@@neilclark2245 I see. Thank you for your reply.
She sure didn't stay in town long! Bon voyage!
Her departure whistle, the MASTER SALUTE, was a far better attempt than her arrival!!!
Arrival wasn’t a salute, it was the foghorn.
@@ladyflimflam you may be correct... I find it strange that the fog horn was only one blast. I thought I read somewhere that a foghorn is rhythmic, meaning a horn every X seconds/minutes. Shrugging over here🤷♂️
@@324bear It was more than once, constant interval while arriving.

Why?

Brings back memories of the North American and South American lake cruisers.
Exactly I commented this a few hours ago that the bygone really of travel on the lakes is brought back.
I like the look of her lifeboats, the modern European ones that are enclosed and I believe much safer
Yes they also act as tender's ferrying passengers to the shore for their excursions where no docking facilities exist.
I feel like they had come to view the area but it had some seriously thick fog!
Excellent horn. Must be among the top five, with the Barker Bark being number one.
Almost looks like a beefed up super yacht like the mega rich own. Nice looking and sleek but only cruises at 18kts!
Pretty hefty horn on the way out. Also didnt realize it has 3 bow thrusters.
2 questions, what are the Globes for on her top, and I see it has a near vertical bow, does she do ice breaking
The domes house communication and data antennas (satellite dishes). Don't know about the bow.
Yes, her bow is ice breaking
6:23 looked like the Chef came out to wave as well.
The rooms don't have balconies ?!
I read it’s a special design, that they can open up. She’s designed for cold water so the balconies can be open or enclosed depending on the weather

Good she is underway… crazy weather is coming 😉
Cruise ship on the great lakes?
Were there onboard or service boats?
Tenders. The vessel has several tenders to off load passengers.
Yes, Ty. They had orange tops. I saw 2!
life boats!!
Que lindo navio.

Shopping, eating, wandering, hehe
They visited the Glensheen Mansion, the North Shore Scenic Railroad, Great Lakes Aquarium or a canoe trip down the St. Louis River
Bon Voyage! Come back again sometime!
Why the different salute compared to the freighters?
Wakes the neighbors
Now that was a salute this time. Nice!
Why?
Hey that's not the Vista Queen.
I can't imagine living around there..
A very fine ship this cruise ship is.
Huge!
I wish I was on board now.
I wish it would have stayed longer and docked.
Cruise ship dock hasn’t been built yet, work on that should start soon, to be ready next year
@@jonathanellsworth21 Thank you 🌻
My idea of a Great Lakes cruise is taking the Miller over to put in bay
My goodness, it looks empty.
She’s at full capacity. 375 passengers, 250 crew
Will the cruise ship coming back to Duluth harbor basin again they talk about it on the Fox news about the cruise ship 🚢
Such a beautiful ship and it's got a loud obnoxious horn
Wish I owned that ship
Practically no bow wave.
They weren't here long! 🤷
That horn is almost as bad as the bridge horn.
No one eats dinner in peace.
Lk sub 🙏🙏🥰👌

A floating motel for rich people . 8k really ?
I’d rather drive and camp or stay at a mom and pop motel . These places are not exclusive and easy to get to .
Looks VERY EMPTY. Holds 400 people and I see maybe 75. Wayyyy toooo expensive.
No she’s full! They’re so booked out that they rescheduled their second ship, Polaris, to Great Lakes cruises next year as well
They were sleeping in from the busy day before. Duluth is one heck of a city to visit.
@@marlyshamberger4048 6:10pm… more likely dinner time!
