Pearl Mist Cruise Ship’s First Visit to a Soaking Wet Duluth! (And Scares the Life out of Me)

  • Cruise ships don’t salute in the mornings, so as to not wake all their passengers up. Or so I believed. So I left my earphones in the car and my guard down, expecting a peaceful 6am arrival. Nearly a very expensive mistake, as my camera went flying, coming completely out of my hands and doing a full flip before I somehow managed to catch it with one hand holding an umbrella and even managed to keep filming. Jump scared me SO bad!
But arriving for the first time through the canal, the cruise ship Pearl Mist! Built in 2009 and measuring 324ft long with the capacity for 210 guests and 70 crew, the ship is less than half the size of the larger Viking cruise ships, but still a beautiful vessel. She is Pearl Seas Cruise Line’s only ship currently, but they have hopes to expand by the look of it. Unlike the Viking ships, she features balcony state rooms since she doesn’t have to deal with the harsh Antarctic waters, which makes her a fan favorite among Great Lakes cruisers. A lot of people also prefer the smaller ship feel over a floating skyscraper, allowing for a more personalized vacation, sort of operating as a public yacht. Because of this, she carries a high price tag for trips. The vessel was renovated in 2023 with an all new interior. Unlike most cruise ships, she has an upper viewing lounge above the bridge, giving panoramic views forward. That lounge and balcony setup does give what would otherwise be a very sleek vessel a bit of an odd appearance, but she’s still gorgeous!
Unlike the Viking cruise ships, she’s here for a 2 day stay, one day for the guests to tour the city, then a second day to swap out with a new set of passengers. This is an experimental run, so it will be her only trip to the city this season. Should it prove popular she may return more often in the future, and I hope she does!

Oh my gosh, too funny! You were very adept at recapturing your camera. Well done! Mine would have ended up in the drink. All said, the ship is an attractive, cozy looking passenger vessel. Thank you for braving the inclement weather to share this with us.

Lucky catch! Thank god I have a tripod, I would have lost so many camera's otherwise lol, especially with the Interlake ships.

Hi there. First, nice video. Really enjoyed watching this rare bird....at least into Duluth. Geez, I watch a ton of ship videos, but seeing your cell phone fly out of your hands was funnier than heck! Glad it didn't end up in the drink!!

That’s a really beautiful piece. Lots of rain and mist. Appropriate considering the name of the ship. I’ll refrain from further comment about any other curious incident that may or may not have occurred involving horns, video equipment, etc. 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭

You made me drop my phone when you dropped yours, haha! That's quite a unique looking cruise ship! That little Nemesis must have a hot date or something because I would not be out there with a boat that small in that weather.

😂 At least I’m not the only one! She is super unique! Ocean cruise ship in the front and sort of a riverboat look in the back. Definitely agreed on the sailboat as well, that would be a rough voyage

She is a beauty! And that horn even gave me a start, and I was expecting it! An interesting vessel entering Duluth in the rain. I agree with you. I'd like to see more of her in the future. By the way. Any chance you could send some of that wet down here to Phoenix? Looks like this year we're going to have another "nonsoon" as the monsoon is apparently going east and north of us, again! Thanks for braving the elements to bring us this beautiful video.

I would love to send you the rain lol, it’s already flooded a few times and there’s more on the way. We really don’t need it! She’s a beautiful ship indeed!

I was on the top deck of the Pearl Mist that morning but stayed under the canopy. Duluth was the final destination of our 14-day Great Lakes cruise that started in Toronto.

That must have been a fun trip!! How does a small cruise ship like this compare to a larger one?

I was supposed to be on this Pearl Mist cruise but had to cancel when I got COVID (for the first time) a few days before it started, alas. I did get to see the Pearl Mist on the Soo Locks livestream though --that looked like a nice day weather-wise. I'm now booked on the ship in September, but won't be visiting Duluth, unfortunately. I'm so glad to see (and hear!) the Pearl Mist's arrival there.

Just for the heck of it I checked prices for Great Lakes cruises earlier this year. They will all lighten your wallet a fair bit. It's not something I'll be doing, that's for sure. Nice reflexes, btw. That was a near disaster. 😯
