you should've so much more subs and views. As someone who has worked over 20 years in the high-end skincare industry...I can assure you it's ALL marketing. Not just La Mer, but all luxury brands. What they really sell is an "illusion" - most people think if it's expensive it's also more effective. To be fair, the majority customers buying these skincare products are wealthy and don't know where to spend their money, or they buy it just so everyone can see the jar in their bathroom. It's about prestige and showing of your money.
Thank you for sharing this! I’ve also heard some people say that we should pay high for skincare so basically buy high end because it is “better quality” and that the ingredients that they use are very good as opposed to the drugstore. Is that really true? Or we still pay for the “brand” for priced skincare that exists?
@@kiranveerkaursidhu610 most drugstore skincare brands are produced by the same companies in the same facilities as the high-priced prestige brands, the ingredients only slightly vary. The higher price is mostly marketing, packing and of course you get bigger samples, have gifts for your costumers, free service etc. as you correctly said they often pick an ingredient they claim is special and patented but with no evidence behind it. Helena Rubinstein has "Edelweiss" stem cells, La Prairie uses caviar and gold whatever sounds expensive. I tried almost all of them (because I got them for free) and I can tell you, they're all just glorified moisturizers - the price is not justified. I personally use a retinoid and sunscreen...

I have just recently become interested in improving my skin care routine. I have watched dozens of RUclips videos from various dermatologists that are popular on here and pump out videos on regular basis. Based on their recommendations, I had my Amazon cart filled with numerous products to get started. Now that I have watched this video and you other one titled Why I Quit Skincare Videos, I have deleted every product from my cart and plan to make better choices. I thank you for saving me hundreds of dollars that I could make better use of. You are a natural in front of the camera and very genuine. Everything you say makes absolute sense and now I will look at ads more critically. I would love for you to do a video on how much the sun damages our skin and what sunscreen products are best. Thank you for your content and for making me laugh out loud!
Dude, I laughed so much and so loud - my cat came into the bedroom to check on me :D pretty awesome content, amazing sense of humor and something pretty rare these days - common sense and using your brain. I really enjoyed watching your videos and am looking forward to watch more)))
I bought a jar of LaMer some years ago and used the whole jar and guess what? It wasn’t any better than a $10 moisturizer. I took the jar back to Nordstrom where I bought it and got my money back. They weren’t happy but I insisted. I will never again fall for a “miracle” cream like that. And yes, that advertising is a load of garbage. Why do we enrich companies like that with our hard earned money? It makes me so angry.
I am so grateful for the video you made being completely transparent about skincare - even though I knew the truth about it all, I still sort of fed into the marketing of certain brands. As you explained, the reality is that the majority of skins issues are solved by a very simple process. First, by addressing internal health (dehydration, hormonal imbalances, diet, alcohol, smoking/vaping, medications that impact skin appearance, etc) and then looking at external factors that impact skin health (intense exercise, current skin regime, weather, sun exposure, pollutants). From there, all the issues can be easily addressed using OTC skincare ingredients and medical grade products. No one needs to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on multiple products that do the exact same thing! I'm grateful I saw your video, because it serves as a very important message in our consumerism culture. I'm excited to see your future content! :)
I found your channel from this La Mer video. I used to only use drugstore stuff like Neutrogena and no-name genetic brands. But as I started to use RUclips more, I started to see people using crazy expensive skincare products and it's almost like if you don't use it, you are not "with it" enough. I have worked in an environmental testing lab and in finance so the science and finance side of me see through the BS. But the imaginary/hopeful side of me wants to believe there is a magic broth or quick solution. I also found that there are a lot of 'get-rich-quick' videos/books/products on financial freedom. It's almost like the 'magic cream' for finance. I have worked with companies that give stock options (including NFT type of companies) and most of the time, stock options go to zero. the options will only be valuable if the company makes it. also in finance, you tend to get a taste of luxury settings (ie. people giving you invitation to VIP events and chocolate with gold flakes on it etc.) and you suddenly feel poor because I can't afford to do these things everyday yet I feel like I should aspire to it. it's exactly the La Mar lifestyle experience when you work in finance. and many of my high finance friends suffer from mental illness. I do agree that "passive" income is important. I also went to Imperial College London for a course (I started to follow you on LinkedIn - Stella P. Tsa is me). Thanks for your videos. I feel like my brain is suddenly more clear from your videos. Eventhough I have a MSc. Finance degree but I never aimed for the highest paying jobs in finance (private equity/investment banking) like my classmates with the same degree. I aimed for world-saving jobs like sustainable investing /endowment fund jobs that don't pay well. my next career step has to be something that pays the highest possible for my education, something I am good enough at and doesn't make me mentally/physically ill over the long-term.
New subscriber here- could you review the la prairie brand pls? It’s the only luxury skin care brand that I keep returning to, because I am seeing immediate results. I have oily combo skin and am in my 50s thank you!
I love how you roast the crap about of La Mer and pointed out every bullshit they put out. This is public service announcement. Btw, that vaseline infused with jellyfish extract sounds amazing!
You’ve obviously never used it, I’m 51 years of age and I look in my 30s La Mer has been my only skincare for over twenty years, I don’t have Botox or fillers and completely natural
@@Poppyy2021 Heredity and sunscreen use are powerful factors in skin condition. I've never used La Mer products, and I never will because of the ridiculously high cost and heavy fragrance. But, with daily sunscreen use from my mid 20s, and good skin inherited from my mother, I look 15 years younger than my age. I very much doubt La Mer has benefited you as much as you think it has. See Dr. Dray's video on La Mer products.
This is amazing. Thanks for being so genuine!! Also, after watching your retinoid video I bought differin gel and I'm so happy with the results. Thank you.
Love your channel for the brutal honest truth and facts! I've known for years La Mer is overpriced and totally hyped up common moisturizer. I'm glad I talked my sister out of trying it. Saved her a lot of money and disappointment.
There's no disappointment in trying it if you know the claims are BS. It feels luxurious and smells divine. It's a nicely formulated moisturizer, and the mythology around it is quite creative. YMMV if you have allergies to fragrance or any of the ingredients it contains.
Wow 😂 I can’t express how much I loved this video! You are hilarious and I am so glad that all the marketing BS is being called out finally 😂 Subbed!! Please do more of these videos!!
The majority of its price is due to the exclusivity tied to them, I say. I heard the experience of purchasing their products used to be very boutique-like or something but then again this was often the case for many luxury products. Another thing I heard is that La Mer's sale in the west has decreased despite the overall increase in sales for La Mer and this is because most of the purchases was made in Asia, specifically in China. This is only something I heard but I say this sure explains the increase of exposure of celebrities using La Mer products in the past 3~5 years.
La Mer is a hard no and feels like a layer of Crisco. My routine: CeraVe cream in the winter, Neutrogena fragrance free gel-cream in the summer, and tretinoin .5 mixed with CeraVe cream at night. Supergoop! Unseen Screen every day of the year, rain or shine. UV rays are always present.
@@Khalid-jh1tx Nope. A fool is easily parted with their money. Why waste money on what's basically snake oil? There are other products a fraction of the price that have similar ingredients. .
I received a good size amount of La Mer crème and lip balm. The person was I’m guessing was showing off that they could gifted it all away to me. At the time I didn’t know it was super expensive facial cream. I used it sparingly and it lasted me about 2 years. I never looked into getting more once it ran out. I enjoyed your analysis of the cream and it’s origin story.
Everything else aside, I'm dying @ the wrestler announcement bit. ❤ On topic, I got a wee tiny (like 1 gram?) size bottle of it as a sample-with-purchase deal... I was SO excited because all I knew was "people love it" & the general idea that it's "so bougie" & out of my price range. Then I used it, & each time I tried it broke me out with like a freckling of shallow pimples. Miraculous bummer.
I wanted to see what the hype was about so I bought the smallest face cream and I was shocked it had fragrance in it. Skip a few years I go to Sephora and the lady selling it was telling me to get it, but I said I don’t like it because of the fragrance, she replies, “fragrance? What fragrance my dear, it’s all seaweed there’s no fragrance.” And I’m like 😑 the audacity.
Years ago I was at Dillards and smelling some Jo Malone perfumes. I came across one that said “Hemlock and Bergamot”. The gal working the area was really pushy so I told her “I think Hemlock is a poison”. She said “oh definitely not”. I replied “yeah, I’m pretty sure someone really famous died from it”. We went back and forth (in a friendly way) and she actually said “no one has ever died from Hemlock” 😂
@@heathercash8060 apparently even eating the smallest bit of the plant can lead to death. Also it seems hemlock was famous for specifically being used to kill people. Like Socrates.
😂 This reminds me of something one of my friends told me a few years ago: she bought a tub of this stuff and it made her break out quite horribly (which I’m now thinking may have been because of the lanolin). So she went back to the ‘skincare consultant’ to complain, and they sold her another super expensive product to supposedly deal with this “rare but known issue”. 😂 Now what I want to ask you (but I suspect I already know the answer) is whether eye cream is just face cream in a teeny tiny container.
Mostly that assertion about the eye cream is correct. However, there is a small percentage of eye creams that are formulated with peptides that specifically are targeting the area around the eyes. Those are the only ones that I think are worth it and even thej there are facial moisturizers eith ingredients that yield the same results for the whole face.
Great video. Someone watched my video on la mer and told me about your channel. I totally agree with your conclusion. I do like fermented skin care and you can purchase kelp bioferment (fermented seaweed just like la mer) and pair it with an inexpensive moisturizer like Nivea(which actually has a lot of the same moisturizing ingredients as as la mer) all for a fraction of the price.
I really hope you could make more videos like this and enlighten our confused souls in the sea of directing marketing strategies. After this video I realised this brand can be an example of how our society is messed up honestly 😂 thank you so much for your informative and knowledgable content!
I been using La Mer for years, I love and see the benefits. I use to use the face wash, cream, tonic and lip balm and lotion. Now I just use the lip balm which does miracle during our cold winter seasons and the gel cream. I get compliments from my skin always. It works for eczema too. I use the mask too. Its the only product that does not breaks me out. I tried Clarins, LanColmn, Olay and Esteee LAuder
Me too! It’s the only cream that works for me. People never guess I’m 50. I’ve been using La Mer for 20 years. The one time I stopped using it my mother said my skin looked dull! I immediately went and bought a jar. 😂 I also love the lip balm.
@@greenjupiter I use the soft cream in the late Spring/Summer. Then the Crème in the Winter. When I was way younger and my skin was more oily in the summer I used the Cool one. Then switch in the winter. I haven’t used the cool one in about 8 years.

No alcohol, no smoking, no fat deep fried fast food. And sunscreen 50 is mandatory. Skin care routine is simple: you decorate it then you wash it from all that decorative cosmetics and use cream.
I would never spend 500 on a face cream, but when I heard from Susan Yara that LaMer and Nivea had the same ingredients, I was thankful it never even crossed my mind 🤣 (I love Nivea’s cream for hands btw)
Quick tip, get European Nivea that says “made in Germany” on the label, it is much much nicer. The formulation sold in The US is greasier and not great for using on one’s face. Cheers!
I heard that Creme de la Mer is amazingly similar to Nivea. And I must say I don't understand that a lot of high end brands still put their products in these kind of containers. I always go for a tube or a pump with my moisturizer to keep it fresh ( no air and no fingers in the product like in a jar ).
Yeah, it's basically the classic Nivea creme (the one in navy tin) plus this algae extract. So, basically, if you get the Nivea tin plus some algae toner/essence/serum (e.g. Marine Hyaluronics from The Ordinary or Algae Toner by Whamisa - there are likely more, these two I can name from the top of my head) you get effectively the same thing but for 20-30€ every couple of months.
@@Kimi_Adventures incredibly bad last time I checked, I don’t remember exactly which parts (it’s quite a while ago I read something about it since it’s such a classic pick & I struggle with very dry skin) but overall it had a lot of the „too thick for skin to breath“ & „traps oil“ type of ingredients that help with dry skin temporarily but don’t rlly deeply hydrate 🤔 but yea u can look it up yourself if you‘re interested, jus sayin
No they aren’t similar. Their first ingredients are different. Nivea cream is not a facial moisturizer either. Now rich people don’t use this stuff. They are marketing for the company for little people to waste their money on a product that is just a nice moisturizer. You can get one just as nice at the drug store. But Nivea cream is water based as it’s the first ingredient on the label. La Mer’s first ingredient is algae. So not the same. Not one bit. And no, again, rich people don’t use La Mer. Most luxury high end things rich people do not buy or use. It’s ruse to get the rest of us to spend our money. Rich people have other means to get far better products than La Mer.
Have you tried cheaper moisturisers and seen if you’d have the same results? For example, id say the same thing about cerave and save 95% of my money compared to you
I would also love a less pricey alternative. However, I dislike CeraVe. It has to be the most boring moisturizer on the market. I also did not experience any specific notable results while using it. Vichy does a bit better, but was a little sticky for my liking. Still looking for an alternative...
I just recently found your channel.. 👏🏾👏🏾 well done, I’m loving your content. I’m surprised it’s not blown up yet as the information you give is gold. Keep up he good work.
Docter, could you make a video about a productive haircare routine like moisturisers, conditioner’s, shampoo and all the extra stuff like the oils? An routine where we could stick to for a very long time.
Oh yes! Please! And please explain that there's no need to buy extremely expensive shampoo and conditioner like the Oribe brand. ($46 to $49 dollars for an 8.5 ounce bottle!) Hair products tend to have the same ingredients and formulas at all price points; the only difference is the fragrance.
Tbh, placebo should not be underestimated, its a very powerful thing. I have a rare eating disorder where my brain believes some food is dangerous, so when i eat that food it always ends up badly. I either vomit or get stomach pain or diarrhea because my body rejects it so badly. But opposite can also happen. If you believe so much that la mer is the miracle, who knows it might improve a lot since placebo also works physically not only mentally
I laughed so much watching your review 😂 As a marketer, I think things this brand is doing should be criminalized if people have this degree of I don’t what allowing them to issue statements like that.
Came from Ali's channel! I love the structure of this video and am amazed by your sense of humor! Though I might've enjoyed it a slightly little more (it's already super enjoyable) if you have edited it into a shorter video
My friend uses La Mer, her skin looks great but I could never 😮 even though, can’t say I haven’t been tempted. Her skin improved when she started using La Mer, she’s now ditched the foundations as she has nice clear skin.
@@scandiimandy Sometimes expensive skincare brands put fragrance and other bad ingredients that can irritate the skin, so not every expensive brand is good.

Used to hate it when I haven’t even tried it. Bought it one day, thought of it as a waste of money til eventually it transformed my lacklustre skin to being plump and radiant. Can’t help but admire how my skin looks and how soft it is. Bought my second 30ml jar to stock up since I have 20% off from Sephora.
I actually used the original which was one product only. Not really expensive but was very hard to acquire. Only made in small batches with waiting list. Original while not magic was a decent product. Estee Lauder tried for years to replicate unsuccessfully. Took years for them to acquire from now children of original owner.
My logical brain hears everything you’re saying, im listening to you as a dermatologist and expert. I’m watching this video for education. But…this is also without a doubt the best moisturiser I have EVER used. And I’m a skincare and make up enthusiast. I literally can’t explain how amazing my skin felt. So logically I get it, over priced and cleverly marketed product, but omg my skin felt so nice. If I knew why and what ingredient worked, I would buy a cheaper version.
I have a huge jar of Nivea I was using before crème de La Mer. Now, as much as I try to convince myself it’s the same thing… it’s just not. The Nivea is so greasy and seems to sit atop the skin on my face while the La Mer just seems melts into it.
WOW! Thank you for your truthful review!!! It's so REFRESHING to hear an honest doctor!!!! People will buy a rock if it's marketed correctly like LeMer ia marketed. Anyone can sell anything will great marketing. Also, thank you for the laughs. You are very funny without trying to be funny.
Ha! People do buy rocks! Salt lamps! (Ooooh the mystery!)… and who could forgery pet rocks?…. And any store that sells crystals and gems for their healing energy. There is someone trying to sell you something every second on tv, social media and every street corner. Exhausting
As a marketer, I approve of this message 😂 In all seriousness, every company out there, pry on the gullibility of its audience. Right or wrong, it is a business and it is our responsibility as consumers to do the research.
Basically La Mer is just an expensive moisturiser for rich people. It is a pretty good moisturiser but it’s way way too expensive. I love how he just use common sense to analyse the La Mer video.
Wow. This so needed to be said & you said it well. I fall for the marketing so many times, even though I know a lot of it is just a type of ASMR for my consumer brain. I can't afford La Mer (& wouldn't buy it if I could) but I've heard someone say that Nivea is a dupe. I got my tin of German-made Nivea for about $12 and it lasts for months. Really glad to see someone with credentials talking about all this. I've subbed.
@@TrudyConway I can tell you like Nivea. Which is fine. Everyone used Nivea when I was young. I just objected to the word "dupe" because it implies Nivea being a cheap copy of La Mer. Nivea is certainly no copy, having been around for more than 100 years.
I had a tiny sample from a beauty box in ‘16? & after 1-2 nites of using it, my husband complimented my complexion! He never does as I have rosacea now. That’s why I’m researching dupes. I’m gonna try the Mario B. seaweed moisturizer & also the La Roche moisturizer, based on dermatologist dupe videos.
This is so hilarious. In fact, I managed to "score" a sample of this (it wasn't really a sample, because they don't do those. it was a small tub that was meant to come as a travel kit with the full-sized purchase, but I negotiated to buy a bunch of other things and got that too) and it made my skin react after the first day. Which is funny, because that's also what my skin does with nivea.

Well-informed explanation of what is actually Creme de La Mer and all its ingredients. He has truly debunked all the scientific claims regrading this creme, and illuminated why it is all myth and pseudoscience; in other words mostly unsubstantiated claims. Thank you Dr. Syed.
I used the original La Mer cream, maybe 20-25 yrs ago when it was $200 a jar before it was sold to some cosmetic co. I also used to get facials every two weeks in New York City. And after I was using it for about 2 weeks my esthetician asked me what I was doing different because my skin looked so glowing and moisturized. Between her facials La Mer and keeping my skin clean I always received compliments on how gorgeous my skin was. Not sure if la mer is the same formula is was years ago.

BTW, thanks to your recent interview, I’m ditching Tiege Hanley, going back to Cereve, and picking up a retinol! Please do a video on retinaldehyde. I’m looking at Mae Love’s Moonlight brand retinaldehyde. Is it just hype, or is it just as good as retinal without the sensitivity issues?
I think the sensitivity issues are built into the right functioning of a retinoid. A retinoid that doesn’t make you more sensitive isn’t having the at least mild exfoliating effect you would want.

I always had great skin, but I wanted it to stay that way! And thankfully, it did! But I had to turn to Traditional Chinese Medicine, and other healthy practices, like staying hydrated for example. No fancy face cream or procedures. ANYWAY! Tks for sharing your knowledge, experience, and personality. PS I must be the anomaly! My skincare vids hardly get views! (As opposed to my hair vids). Maybe I should use those vague terms like on the Mer commercial 😂
I live next to a casino with a row of high-end shops, including a La Mer concession. Whenever I walk past it a few days a week, I stop to use a free tester sample. I apply their face serum and overnight regenerator, and I'm genuinely impressed by the noticeable results. And this is coming from a guy who is usually very skeptical of all cosmetic brands!
You are funny. I trust funny doctors. A doctor that encourages critical thinking when learning about a product. Your deconstruction of how “they“try to manipulate us is refreshing. I wish all these commercials with these scientific somersaults could be debriefed for the audience. Thanks for doing it and educating me.
That passive-agressive guilt trip at the beginning killed me. 🤣👍🏼 Also... just think! If the founder would've eaten enough of this "merde", he could've lived forever! 🤣 And for the record, this IS a miracle cream! It makes your money dissapear. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I used one bottle of La Mer. Rationally, I know it’s not making my skin different(it’s just another occlusive moisturizer). What I like about it is the texture. It’s thick but not sticky ( compared to many other creams) and I enjoy the experience of melting the slightly solid cream in my hand. Question: if it’s nothing rocket science about this cream, why can’t other brand create something of the same texture and be as successful as La Mer
They do. It takes time to find. I liked face soap (not sure I name it right) from an expensive japanese brand. It was like $50, I think it is a bit too much/ But the butter texture what I really loved. Took me a while before I accidentally bought Nivea same kind of cleanser with similar texture. Guess what? I use neither. When I have a heavy cosmetic on, exfoliant works better.
OMG I fill up the shopping card with the La Mer product easy went over $1000 and I was just one step away to push the button and buy it, but something was telling me I need to do more research ,watching your video Totally change my mind thank you so much.

No one needs to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on multiple products that do the exact same thing! I'm grateful I saw your video, because it serves as a very important message in our consumerism culture. I'm excited to see your future content! :)
You are the most hilarious and honest doctor i have ever seen in my life. I love you! Subscribed!

@MariaMaltseva I agree. But the price is a deterrent particularly knowing u can't believe on its claim.
Wow 😂 I can’t express how much I loved this video! You are hilarious and I am so glad that all the marketing BS is being called out finally 😂 Subbed!! Please do more of these videos!!
Please don’t stop making videos like these. Yes, there are many skin care videos but not many with your honest opinion.
Great routine!

Nope.

So true even if one is able to buy such expensive products even then he/she shouldn’t. Great video we look forward to seeing your great content 👍
Absolutely - out of principle we never should!
Now what I want to ask you (but I suspect I already know the answer) is whether eye cream is just face cream in a teeny tiny container.
I had no idea you could buy kelp bioferment?! I've never seen such a thing for sale...where might I find it?

I would never spend 500 on a face cream, but when I heard from Susan Yara that LaMer and Nivea had the same ingredients, I was thankful it never even crossed my mind 🤣 (I love Nivea’s cream for hands btw)
Quick tip, get European Nivea that says “made in Germany” on the label, it is much much nicer. The formulation sold in The US is greasier and not great for using on one’s face. Cheers!
German nivea is too greasy on your face, nivea soft is a little bit better.
Btw nivea sells normal face creams as well. Use those.
The comment about “give them some credit, they will let you pay it in parts they’re not animals” 😂
😂
Nivea blue tin made in Germany $10 and incredible

How long as has she been using it & does she look old? La mer has fragrance in it which ages the skin.

I really want to find something if similar texture but less expensive
