  • Why do plyometrics work and what are they and how can you maximise their effectiveness.? John answers these questions and more. Subjects covered include drop jump height, speed of reaction, leg stiffness and angle of take-off.
Plyo's are a vital ingredient in most power sports training but there are certain strategies that will enable you to get the most out of them.

I am confused about plyos, jumpers and sprinting. The trend is for sprinting has been plyometrics. Jumpers are the "kings" of plyos, so should a sprinter simply train with the jumpers to increase their leg power?

I think you need similar but different qualities for sprinting compared to jumpers. For me a sprinter needs potentially greater concentric strength emphasis to be able to apply force at the start and acceleration phases and they will need to do more sled pulling, for example, for this. The greater leg stiffness that comes from plyos is needed for the max velocity parts of the race. It's odd but sprinters to my knowledge don't seem to use plyos to the same extent or a larger extent that could assist their speed.
IAAF research indicates that over the past few decades sprinters have been getting leaner and less muscled.
Id suggest drop jumps to increase stiffness and speed hops and bounds. So, I think sprinters could benefit from jumpers' training.

+Federico Ponzin will do. When I play then back on my phone/iPad they sound fine. So it's difficult to judge!
