Matthew Rhys has become one of my favorite Conan podcast guests. And I love that he discussed the impact of Richard Burton. One could argue that Burton and Elizabeth Taylor helped create the modern concept of fame. No one today can measure up to their level of fame, much less their talent.

Hi :) friendly correction- we would say "Welsh" rather than "Welch", not quite sure where the latter spelling comes from (probably the same origin as the use of "Scotch" to mean "Scottish") but like our Scottish cousins we're not the biggest fans of it
It’s always interesting to me how children ‘reject’ their family’s language but when they become adults if they continue to speak it they are glad they did.
I went to a Welsh speaking school even though both my parents did not have the opportunity to learn Welsh when they were kids. What it gave me and my sister was a way of speaking in front of our parents without them knowing what we were talking about. The interesting thing was I had basically learned Welsh by the time I was about 7 or 8 and honestly hope more countries adopt the approach of teaching kids as early as possible other languages as at that age your brain is primed and eager to learn before our heads get filled with useless garbage and stress when we become adults. I later learned German in secondary school but by that age hormones had kicked in and distractions from girls meant my focus was not what it once was and it took me a lot longer to learn so I'm fairly sure if I had other languages taught at an earlier age I would know enough to be reasonably fluent in a lot of other languages
Title has nothing to do with the video Edit: In case they change it, original title and description were alluding to Sona/Matt not meeting Rhys. But the whole video is about him being Welsh with his son living in New York
This was probably Gourley's doing considering him and Sona have been talking about not being on the Matthew Rhys podcast for a few episodes now. They'll probably change it soon
lol. Imagining Gourley logging in and/or paying the RUclips guy to upload it with this title.... I honestly can also imagine Conan talking to Matthew about this though, sooo... Hoping there's more vids. This was super good and funny even if the title is off.
I saw Rhys in O'Neill's Wee Bloody Me in the role of the cuckolded shoe polisher. He was magnificent. Years later, I had the pleasure of seeing his turn in Ibsen's The Squealer playing the shirtless barfly romancing Selena Gomez as the dowager Aunt Rose. He's never been anything but amazing.
Didn't Matt and Sona say they badly wanted to meet this guy? I expected to recognize him when I finally saw him on the podcast, but I have zero knowledge of who this guy could be.
So, he is most widely known as one of the two leads on the socio-spy-drama The Americans (his co-lead Kerri Russell is to whom he was ultimately married). Most recently he's been great in Perry Mason!
@@brownkemosabe Oh, thanks for the info! I also didn't know Perry Mason was still on the air. I thought it was a show from decades ago, but I assume you're referring to a reboot, or something.
It's so weird seeing these two talk about my hometown. Burton was from the valley on the outskirts of the town which was a former mining community, but the town itself is known for its massive steelworks. Nothing like the smell of sulphur to motivate you to move as far away as possible.
Even funnier if they do it in secret without Matt and Sona knowing about it. Just release a whole series of podcasts about random stuff or with guests and whatever angle they want to come at it with.
