My previous house I had 2 cabinets above my stove and I installed 2 of those pull down wire racks sold at The Container Store and I LOVED THEM. One rack was sweet and the other savory.
I now have the Elfa back of the door rack system on my pantry door and I really love it. I bought the deeper baskets and created little risers out of styrofoam to lift the spice jars in the back for visibility. I also keep all my vinegars, oils, shelf stable sauces (soy sauce) in the other baskets. It’s an 8 foot door and I use all of it.
My door is a solid core door with enough hinges to support all the weight. If you go this route, make sure you are confident in the weight capacity of the door and hinges.

When we remodeled our kitchen 8 years ago, I had a narrow upper cabinet to use for spices. I bought a selection of slide out spice racks from the Vertical Spice Co. on Amazon. The large size holds containers like those sold at Costco for garlic powder, etc. The medium size holds 2 spice bottles side by side or some of the bigger spice bottles, and has 2 tiers. The narrow racks also have 2 tiers. They pull all the way out of the cabinet, which makes it easy to see everything. None of the solutions in the video would work for me. Admittedly, these are expensive, but you only cry once, and I don't regret it at all.

Left to right there is a section for herbs, then hot spices, next spices. I find this set up more useful than alphabetically organized.
Also, there is plenty of space for spices as they come from the grocer and Indian market.

Thanks for the review of the variety of storage ideas.
when I designed my kitchen, I asked for a top drawer in my island that is a little deeper than planned. So when I'm at the island my spices are right at hip level in a giant drawer, right there where I need them as I mix ingredients. This is also opposite my stove where a quick grab might be necessary.
The very wide drawer is deep enough for the bigger grocery-store sized glass spice jars. I also use the squat Ball jars to store bulkier-purchase spices. I don't use any risers or anything. the jars simply store upright with handmade labels on the tops. I have a LOT of spices, so they are stored alphabetically. Generally I repackage spice purchases into the glass spice jars for size conformity. Porous plastic is almost always traded for the fresher-keeping glass [or a few tins too].
The drawer, away from heat sources, also allows storage of some odd boxes, warehouse-sizes [put on their side] and tins too. I do use flexible plastic separators [like the kind for lingerie drawers] to separate the rows and keep them in some order.
In other houses, I've tried the other styles, including the metal hanging rack [the second best], but right there all in one place in a drawer has been the most satisfying.
Also I designed my kitchen cabinets [all wood] with adjustable racks on the inside of the doors. That's where all the odd-sized varieties of salt and pepper go. In that cabinet's adjustable shelves are oils and vinegars, liquid smoke, vanilla, various flavorings. That kind of design alleviates the deep cabinets and allows for an easy reach.

I have the narrow pull out spice drawer next to my stove with uniform square sided jars & uniform preprinted sticker labels are on the top. This leaves a jar that stays lined up in rows & doesn't spin around due to the squared sides and I'm looking down over the label tops for easy grab. I have a similar over the door unit, I can't tell from the video, but are all of the shelves the same depth on the one shown? The one I have has shelves that are different depths, which is great for us. Mine looks a little chaotic since I don't have the shelves in any semblance of order (by depth) but it woks great. Since the shelves on mine are wire, I cut foam board down to size and placed one in each basket, it works great! Everything stays up without falling over. If I can ever find a semi thick plastic that I can cut with a box cutter, then I'll get that. I need that for our reusable shopping bags anyway.

I actually have the Spicy Shelf Deluxe and it's split in two to fit in my small mobile home cabinets. And it's going into the bin soon. It does its job, but if you put anything else in the cabinet then you have to shuffle things around or remove items to get at the spices you're looking for. If you can devote a whole cabinet for it and only sit smaller spice jars on the bottom between the shelves, it would be just fine. I just don't have that luxury. (Also, it's just cheap plastic and fidgety to adjust.) I'm probably going with a countertop solution with a wooden tier that I'm currently using elsewhere. One thing I didn't see here is something like you'd see the spices in at the grocery store, a slanted rack where they'd slide to the front. Something like that would be a great way to deal with them. Similar to that, I have a platform for my Keurig (gone bye-bye) with a divided drawer for K-cups which will be perfect for the little stubby spice jars, and I'll sit that wooden tier on top of it. Another solution I already use for spices from large jars or packages is the Kamenstein magnetic spice tins that I stick on the side of my fridge. The tops are clear so you can see the spices and they twist for shaker or pour openings. There are also magnetic or wall mount spice racks, if you don't have a pantry door to hang a set on. When space is limited there is often no one good solution and you have to get creative.

I haven't heard anyone mention this yet but I store all of my spices in a drawer in my fridge. They all stay cool and dark. I store my nuts and oils in there as well to keep them from going rancid. Olive oil solidifies in the cold temp though so it's good to only reserve some out a little bit at a time. It does take up quite a bit of room in the fridge but best option for me.

That being said, I need to store the back up bags of bulk spices for refilling the jars in the pantry. They're just unwieldly. Definitely a lot cheaper to buy spices in bulk, though, unless you're someone who considers a dash of oregano too spicy. But my chili uses more than a literal cup of spices, so I need to buy in bulk. xD

I have a pretty large herb & spice collection, as I use a lot so have a variety of storage solutions.
The main one is an antique tallboy in the kitchen. I measured the inside dimensions of the drawers & bought Kilner style jars in the appropriate size to tessellate into it. This is for regularly used spices.
One of the wall cabinets is for everyday spices, including the multiple types of pepper or mixes that I keep in their own hand grinders. I also keep my masala dabba (Indian spice tin) in here.
As I buy in bulk to keep prices down, there is also a cold storage type in the form of an under-counter fridge/freezer. Depending on spice type it can be kept cool or frozen to prolong life. I use a vacuum bag sealer to exclude the air from these spices & it also stops any cross contamination of scent/smell/flavour between the bags. I also keep coffee beans in vacuum bags in the freezer here.
The main things are to exclude air, cross contamination & light - this degrades flavour, & low, stable temps are good too.

I'd been given a spice container like you described (metal tin which holds about 6 metal cups for spices) by a friend. I've been wondering if those 6 spices are cross contaminating their scents. Does this happen?

    • @Getpojke
      @Getpojke 3 месяца назад +1

@@Sheri... It can do, though it shouldn't be too much of a problem or millions wouldn't be in use in the likes of India & Pakistan. As it's used for spices in daily use the turnover in the box should be fairly quick. Also many of the spices are regularly used together in the same dishes so a little cross mixing would be more of a boon than a curse. Personally I don't keep volatile or rapidly ageing spices like asafoetida/hing in there. I like the smell of it, but unless its in a sealed, airtight container & in the freezer I can quickly smell it throughout the house.
So just keep relatively small amounts of spices that you use daily in it.

The one Julia was afraid to touch was a turntable, but the models in this clip are not the full lineup of what was tested. They also tested a double-tiered turntable by Copco that they found quite sturdy with a decent capacity but the design made it hard to see the jars towards the centre and it was too large for some cabinets. Recommend with reservations.

I got some little wire rack shelves from Home Depot that can be attached to a cabinet or door with screws. I think they were about $10 each. They are installed right by my butcher block table, in plain view. No big deal.
I think the plastic stand-alone ones look cheap and inconvenient. Where do you put them? I don't have that much counter space. The one that wobbles is especially bad.

Does the door hanger have retainers at the back, or does it rely on the door board for the back? My concern is opening or closing the door in a rush could cause the rack to temporarily separate from the door, added to the extra depth in my paneled door, could cause the smaller spice jars to be lost out the back. I could weave a back with twine, but it would be good if they already thought of that issue and addressed it.🤔

      • buy spices in bulk, store most of the supply in mason jars, and only a small amount in a standard size spice container. Only open the big container when you need to re-fill the small one.
      • or just buy small quantities in bulk and use them up before they go bad
      • Save the silica gel packets you get in other things and add one to each spice container. If they stop working you can heat the packets gently to drive off moisture.
      • keep the spices in tightly closed jars in the fridge or freezer
