      Considering that it would only take about 12-15 hours to make a king size blanket, its really not that labor intensive for a knitting project.. however, 40 pounds of merino wool is easily like $400 so most of the cost is just in the wool itself.

    Thank you for saying particular instead of OCD! For me, using the term OCD is not really offensive so much as annoying because it'd be an incorrect term. Particular, picky or perfectionist are much more accurate. Because most of the time that's all it is, and it's not actually OCD. It has just become trendy slang to overuse the term OCD, and it's never really a good idea to use a medical condition as slang anyway. If enough of us use the correct terms the trend will eventually fade out.
    Just sharing my perspective on this!

    • @parisbee7371
      @parisbee7371 5 лет назад +94

      I was so happy when she used the word particular over OCD! I don't know why mental illnesses became a trend that people used to describe behaviours when it's not something to be joked about or compare to - these are serious disorders that people struggle with and by others using it as slang it takes the piss out of those who actually have it. I have certain behaviours that might fall under 'OCD tendencies', but I would never say I have it - I just call myself a perfectionist and very particular about how I like things done. There is a big difference between wanting something a certain way and then doing something because if you don't you physically can't live life comfortably without doing said thing. I don't know why people don't get that.

    • @josefinenordnes1546
      @josefinenordnes1546 5 лет назад +103

      Mystery Shack OCD is not a metaphor it’s a disorder. And someone’s disorder or syndrome should not be used as a metaphor. And you calling us sensitive for not wanting people to use our disorders and syndromes as a joke is really rude. These are real things that affect people’s life and it should not be used as a joke. So please go watch some documentary’s or something so you can understand how much OCD and other disorders/syndromes affect people’s life’s, and how offensive it is to use that as a metaphor.

You definitely want a contrast of colours from your wall and furniture as you don’t want to just drown out the colour of the blanket, so definitely not white or black, creme may be okay but periwinkle would definitely be better. Plus, periwinkle will be much easier to maintain.

    I don't think you want to wash that in a washer and dryer. That roving fiber is going to be a hot mess if you do that to your finished project. And you did a nice job on it, so it would be a shame to mess up your work. I held my breath when you ran the fiber through the dryer, and I'm not sure why they told you that would be helpful. 🤔 That giant ball of yarn in the corner cracked me up!! HA HA!! Good lord that was HUGE! Thanks for showing that knitting can be a cool thing. You could wash the finished blanket on delicate or a wool setting. Then air fluff. Dry flat. Then after it dries completely, you could go back and "fluff" each stitch with your fingers. This process takes forever, but I hear it cuts down a lot on the shedding and piling issues these blankets tend to have. But since she felted the roving a bit before she started knitting, the process she did will cut down on those issues as well.

    I loved seeing you make this! I am a knitting pattern designer and appreciate videos that introduce people to knitting! I would love to see an update in a few months about how it holds up; roving typically pills pretty intensely. A yarn store I go to has one of these on a bench that was made a year ago and it is almost entirely felted and pilly. If you want one that holds up really well, there are jumbo weight (size 7) yarns at Michaels, ACMoore, and JoAnns like Wild Child by Loops & Thread (its a super fuzzy, almost furry feeling yarn). There is also Bernat Blanket Big which feels similar to fleece! Since these aren't wool you can't just felt the ends together when you need a new ball, you typically sew them (or tie a knot if you want it done quick!)

    *cries in fiber artist*
    THIS IS NOT YARN. This is ROVING its suppose to be turned INTO YARN. The reason it "rips easy" is because it's not intended to be used this way. I dont care what the lying seller says. ROVING IS NOT YARN! This blanket is going to look like poo in a VERY short time since the structure of the fibers have no strength without being spun. The felting will help a little. But not much. Think ruined in 2 days instead of 10 minutes. There are actual chunky yarns made to make blankets like this with. Also, this is crochet. Not knitting. *breathes into a paper bag*

      It starts as finger - or hand I guess - crochet but branches into knitting without needles. I've done plenty of hand crochet and you don't do loops all the way down and then loop through with crochet, just knitting. Some kinds of yarn are intentionally very much like roving, and "yarn" these days seems to have expanded its meaning. Strips of cloth can be called yarn depending. It's very tearable tho

Lots of people with OCD struggle with things people would think are morbid. I know a woman who's diagnosed OCD who doesn't have any knives in her home because her OCD makes her think she's going to murder her family. It's terrifying, and a lot more serious than mainstream trends make it out to be.

Maybe you can wash it in washer on wool program with wool soap, but thats not a given it would not felt the whole thing up and then there is also a question concerning the drying of the whole thing - definetly not in dryer, maybe would work if you lay it flat on the warm floor and leave it for some days , since that would be legit time it would take to dry it since you cant really spin it on high rpm in machine either. I got some chunky yarn myself for REALLY cheap price and was about to make one myself, but then I kinda stopped with the whole thing since I just imagined how it would look in no time in my house ( i have small children ),

I don't know a whole lot about crocheting, but it doesn't seem to leave a row of loops sticking out (like the kind that would typically sit on a needle in knitting) like you see in the tutorial vid at the beginning.

    My friends and I all learned to knit by joining a knitting club that was on during school lunches, our school doesn't have indoor spaces to sit when it's raining at lunch so our main motivation to join was to stay dry and warm when it was raining all winter... but then it was actually really fun to knit.
    We all made the squares together to make a giant blanket which my friend still has at her house.
    Never assume the type of person who can knit, there is no type, in my friend group we had
    -2 girls who got to uni on a scholarship for their smarts
    -another one on a sports scholarship (she's a rugby coach and the team captain, as well as breaking all our school swimming records) she's studying a double degree, law and buisness
    - one was apprenticing as a hairdresser at school and is now a professional hairdresser
    -and the last one is at polytech studying to work in childcare
    -im studying zoology and I'm the prsident of an archery club
    None of this screams "hey I can knit"
