Some people find trot diagonals confusing - I remember I did. I hope this video helps to alleviate some of that confusion. BTW I had to film over 2 days - one was beautiful and the other it rained! Thanks for watching
Thank you this made soooooo much sense lol I have been riding all my life and I never understood this fully till now thank you again, 53 year old rider still learning lol Leah UK
No, thank you Leah. You are who I make my videos for and I thank you for taking the time to let me know they help. You have made my day ☺️. We will always be learning because it is impossible to know it all - that one of the things I love about horses 😊
Thank you for your amazing video, it makes me be able to ride and control a horse in less than around 15 hours saddle time to understand this, speeding me up tremendously!!! Thank you thank you.
Glad to know I'm not alone. I feel so stupid because I don't get this 100% of the time. I think I'm on the right diagonal my coach will say WRONG...I don't understand. I'm going to watch this video more.
This was super duper mega helpful! Because I have struggled with getting on the correct diagonal myself. And this is gonna help me out so much with trotting on the right diagonal. Thank you so much for making this video!
Oh Yay you got to see it 🎉🎉🎉 I was worried it might get lost in the sea of videos and you wouldn’t see it. Thank you so much for asking the question ☺️ I’m glad it helped.
This was SO helpful! I was having a argument about how to change diagonals with a friend and I’m glad I could confirm I’m correct to teach her!! Could you please teach how to do a basic cross rail jump? I’m beginning to jump in my riding and your tips will definitely help!! Tysm!
Josie, since I love the way you teach, I wonder if you could do a very basic beginner’s video on how to steer your horse-what to do with your hands and your legs. Thanks so much!
Must be a Brit thing, haha, you remind me SO MUCH of my first riding instructor, she just retired and I am not exactly vibing with her replacement, haha- too American! I miss you Avril! Love the way you teach, SO helpful!
Can you tell me exactly what you would like to know Sue? What part of figure eights you would like some help with? I will certainly do some for you. I am about to film some for next month so let me know and I will do them 🙂
Thank you very much for the video excellent I still have issues with sitting correct diagonals 😀😀I feel better now I know it’s nit just me I only ride one hour a week so it’s all about practise wish I could afford more lessons keep up the good work thanks again x
I think you will find a LOT of people have trouble with trot diagonals. You are doing a fabulous job with the time you have. Keep going and a time will come when you can ride more. 😊
Haha...me too. I can do the posting trot perfect clockwise...but counter clockwise. Hahaha...the struggle is real! This 2 bump to switch tho....I'm going to test this out this week! And it really is a challenge when you only ride an hour a week....you can't practice outside of that hour. Good luck to you and wish me 🤞🏼 thank you!!!
sometimes i know i rise at the wrong diagonal, but having problem to adjust it.. tq for the video , i am going to try the 1 2, 1 2 2, to change to the right diagonal..
It depends on what is causing your leg position problem. It could be anything from an incorrectly fitting saddle (tipping you backwards/forwards) to a stiffness/balance issue in your body. I would need to see it to be able to help you with your particular problem. I will link to a video I did on exercises to help your balance and they may help you 🙂. ruclips.net/video/n4sY_XSyC4c/видео.html
The thing that always confused me is what to call them. Both diagonals include a left leg and a right leg, so I never could tell which diagonal my instructor was asking for. (Dyspraxic brain, I had a similar issues when learning to drive a car, ended up going the wrong way quite a few times!) So am I correct in saying that if the left hind and right front on the ground is the one I should be sitting on, that's called the left diagonal because the left hind leg is the one we are thinking about (weight wants to be on that leg)? You've helped me understand the reasoning behind the diagonals with this video which is really great, thank you!
Hi Leila, Your query made me question my answer! So I went off and did a little research and it appears I am wrong (and not for the first time in my life 😆). When talking about diagonals the books state that we should refer to the outside shoulder. So if they say left diagonal they mean sitting with the left front hoof. This to me is completely counter-intuitive as it is the right hind leg we are actually targeting in this instance. This is why people don't understand why we are doing it but who am I to argue with the books. Just remember that you need to sit on the inside hind leg and then you will always be correct and not have to worry about right and left. I'm sorry if I have confused you even more as that wasn't my intention 😕. I will remove my other comment here so I don't confuse anyone else.
I prefer your way of thinking about it Jose because it’s more from the horse’s comfort and long term soundness pov which I really resonate with. Get the books to change 🤣
Sorry but I thought this video is explaining sitting on the side hind so you put your body weight to the inside hind to help your horse balance? Did I misunderstand?? lol
No you didn’t Ho Marko. That is correct 😊. I have done so many videos that I can’t remember what I describe in each one so I thought I must have explained it in another video. Thank you for helping out. 🙏🏻
Sorry but I wan to make sure I understood correctly. So, you have to rise when the horse's left shoulder is moving forward if your horse make circle rightly?
You will never believe this but I have been riding for well over 30 years, yes over 30 and I STILL never know which diagonal I am on. It's madness I know, and I know how to check but the fact is I am never sure whether I am rising or sitting when the outside shoulder is going forward. I can't even see it in your video!! I can sit for two easily enough but I have to be told I am wrong (most of the time). I always think I have no "feelage", should I just give up?
You rise when the outside shoulder is going forward so if you can see it going forward then you have got this Susan. Also, take a little pressure off yourself as unless you are doing high-level dressage it's not the end of the world if you post on the wrong diagonal. You've got this! 😊
@@BasicHorseTrainingOk, forgive me for a stupid question, Josie. If I rise when the outside shoulder is going forward, then the inside hind is also going forward, correct. Therefore I would be would be rising on the inside hind instead of sitting on the inside hind like we want. What is wrong with my logic?
@@BasicHorseTraining the whole wrong and right trotting diagonal, I was at a clinic at my barn and the instructor teaching asked what it was and i didn’t know what it was so that’s what I’m confused abt
You sit in the saddle when the inside hind leg is stepping on the ground. You rise out of the saddle when it is coming off the ground. Because the diagonal front leg is in the same motion as the inside hind (the legs work in diagonal pairs in trot) you can watch the outside front leg/shoulder to see where it is. Does that help?

Ok, so when turning right I am up when the right shoulder is forward, when turning left I am up when the left shoulder is forward?
Or is it the opposite? It’s interesting how many seasoned riders disagree about this!
