Developing "Good Hand" is the best thing you can do for yourself and your horse. It takes time and practice but it is so worthwhile! I hope this video helps you. 🙂
Wow - this was so helpful for me! I watched this video last night and rode today, and the difference was extraordinary. Sassy was so comfortable on the bit, and we had the best ride we've ever had. Thank you!
I discovered your channel just recently and your videos are so useful! Clear, straight to the point and with practical demonstrations on the horse. Thank you for the work that goes into making them!
I just returned to riding as an adult, and I have to say I appreciate your videos so much! Definitely the clearest and most informative explanations I've heard, even after a handful of in person trainers!
I'm watching this again Josie, because I'm really trying to develop contact - well connection, with my horse, currently in training. Learning dressage together for the 1st time (& I'm 50+ on a little Arab mare used to being bitless!!)!! We're trying & I'm searching for the clarity, the learnable skills, that will give me the game changing outcome!! Your style & the specifics of your content, are really helpful! Thanks again Josie. I love your videos 😍🙏
I love this analogy of a mobile phone cutting out... Constant but gentle pressure. Great advice 🐎. My horse is very sensitive so she'll only needs just the lightest of touch on her bit. The only time I keep it a bit slack is when we are trail riding where I'm mostly just giving her subtle leg cues. Love your videos. Thank you
Old rhyme : "keep your head and your heart up, your hands and your heels down, your knees keep close to your ponies side and your elbows keep close to your own.". Can't remember where l learnt it as l was about six or seven, very much horse orientated, riding lessons, books and more books. I love your videos, fantastic info. I am joining your "not perfect" but striving for perfection club.....wonder what kind of logo we can create 😂❤
This one is chock full of information. I especially love the third point and I really really really need this. Thank you so much ! I am going to do these.
@@BasicHorseTraining -- EVERYTHING you taught here has helped me. TODAY was the proof. Your illustration of the poor communication [like a cell phone cutting in and out] with our horses really made sense and so I kept my hands lightly closed the entire time i rode today. He REALLY heard me and understood and i could turn him/steer him with my seat and legs alone with just an “indication” of where we were turning by lightly opening the inside rein….he turned right into it, no struggle no tugging no frustration. I have GREAT hope for future rides now. Third tip is cemented in my brain now and keeping elbows at my side is almost magical in its impact on my horse. THANK YOU FOR THIS ONE. GOLDEN!!!!
Great video. Excellent tips. Although I did already knpw them, my hands are bad, your reminder is very timely, thank you. Its like still have to remind myself to sit up and look up. Oh how I hate those unhelpful habits x
@@BasicHorseTraining ah, my knowledgeable friend frequently tells me off for too much self criticism so you are very intuitive. No good she says, comparing myself to Charlotte duJ .
Allow yourself to be a learner Janet as one truth I can tell you is that you will be learning until the day you can’t get on a horse but don’t criticise yourself as that stops learning. Be inquiring 🤗
Today while riding I focused on closed hand and tip nr 3. I had such a good feeling. Thank you so much. I am on the right track to get better hands and contact. Love your videos❤❤
These are great tips! Thank you! Along the same lines of having good hands, I see that you wear gloves and I’ve been told that I should wear them to steady the feel of the rein & to stop the rein from slipping. Would you discuss the pros and cons of wearing gloves?
Thank you so much for this! I started watching a few other videos and could not get through them. Their voices were paining me. You have a lovely voice and tone and the info is wonderful. Much appreciated! 🫀
Thank you for all your videos Josie! I watch so often that when I ask my three year old if she wants to ride our horse, she's says "No, I want to ride Spider" 😍🤣
Great info.!! Especially toward the end when you mention not pulling with your hands. The horse can pull all he wants, but if your elbows are stationary you're able to give release immediately, or the horse will find the release immediately.
Thank you. I ride reining horses, and it’s just the same, I ride as much as possible with my body. Lot of the time if I am loping one, I’ll pitch the reins over my horn and circle them that way.. All your exercises have made me a better rider. It’s an English term, but what is “on the bit”? I suppose I could say as soon as I feel the bit on the bars of the horses mouth, I back off the pressure and wait with as little as possible for a reply. Thanks again.
Hello! In this video, are you giving some heel pressure with each step, alternating with the step of the horse? I can't tell if it's just the rhythm of the horse or if you are giving little taps with each step, as if to keep the horse moving forward. Thanks!!
Absolutely love this video- all your videos actually but this one really speaks to me. Though I've ridden successfully all the way up through FEI I have always struggled with managing my hands. Cannot wait to get these tips into practice today!
Lovely demo & tips Josie, thankyou. I will b following your channel now! I've seen enough to know you're technically proficient & you have great ability to translate your knowledge & skills through yr descriptions! Very useful analogies, Josie, thankyou for sharing. Indeed I will practise these tips. 🐴🐎🙏
Happy Friday Josie and Spider! Thanks for these great tips! In addition to Sally’s chicks, I had an instructor tell me to imagine I was holding an ice cream cone - if I tip my hands, the ice cream would fall out! 🍦😉
Thank you for this. I've switched to Western from English (or plain old bush bashing). The quarter horses I ride in my lesson have very slow lopes and their heads bob up and down. I have a lot of trouble keeping my hands still as they tend to go with the horses bobbing head! Western people don't seem to close their fingers but I will try this at my next lesson and see if by closing my fingers more and tucking my elbows into my hips if I can keep my hands still! I'm hoping if my hands are still and fingers closed my lesson horse may get into more of a frame. I'm pretty much taught in Western to use my leg and seat for turning. The horses I ride are both very well trained and basically if i just look a particular way, they'll go there but I definitely have trouble loping and keeping my hands still. By the way, are you from South Australia? South Aussie's seem to have a slightly different accent. lol
Absolutely awesome video! I struggle with keeping my hands from rotating inward. After a few rides of focusing on that it seems to be getting better. But ill have to try the crop tip. Thanks a bunch!
I've just found your videos, by accident, and thankfully! I must say your way of deconstructing and demonstrating riding as it is in real life for most of us, the warts and all analogy, really speaks to my often confused brain that needs specific detail to understand the mechanics. @@BasicHorseTraining I used your tips at my weekly class at riding school yesterday and wow, what a difference it made. My horse softened and I also felt like my posture improved. I can't wait to continue working on this :-)
I was trained early to allow the rein to go over your pinky because it is the weakest digit? Keep thumbs up and a very slight movement of the other fingers and wrist is all that’s needed. This together with leg pressure bends the horse even further. My problem was always too tight hands, so I had to lower them and constantly relax. Relaxed rider, relaxed horse.
Thank you for this beautiful video 💫🌟✨❤️🌹 I have a question : if my elbows are close to my hips as suggested, while posting, my hands will go up and down. And we wish not to see this. So hard task 🌹🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great question. They will go up and down if you have stiff elbows. You need to develop soft elastic elbows. I show you how to tackle that problem in this video ruclips.net/video/cbzVZfGaPo0/видео.html Thank for your great question 🙂

This seems very thorough and useful info, but I cannot see your hand position well. The lighting is a bit too dark. Could you have close-ups taken occasionally, if you are describing some smaller motions, like hands, feet, etc. I go by your verbal descriptions, which are great, but the visuals would help. Thanks very much in advance....
