I know now it's pronounced ''deener'' and not ''diner''. Also, I don't know why I didn't mention the meaning of it, but it means ‘’idolator’’ or ‘’servant of false gods.’’
Thanks for covering this game. Love this game and I've recently purchased a sealed copy after watching some youtube videos about it. I've already started the game and notice that this game are filled with amazing artworks from the old days. This game is really a hidden gem.
voiceover bit was much appreciated - good effort that really sealed the deal on how cool this game is. Just needed a bit more meat on the bones like you said but man... what's here is so lovely.
I love when you cover obscure games like this. It's unlikely that I'd ever have stumbled across Götzendiener on my own, and it seems like a really charming little experience. Also good call on the voice acting, I feel like it added to the video more than just a summary would have. You guys did a great job.
Thank your for presenting GötzenDiener to us, to me. Your channel is fantastic and I am very interested in your work. I wish you much success and joy creating videos!
Didn't knew that game. And I'm actually lookin' for games like this: obscure, with an unique atmosphere, and of course, an ost that matches the two other requisites. I'm playing (and loving) Baroque for PS1 right now, and Götzendiener seems to be the next one. Thanks, man!
This is older but have you heard of the wings of madoola for the famicom? It's an early sunsoft game, It's a bit clunky but I really enjoyed it! It has a similar fantasy vibe to this game as well!
I've been looking for a game, an rpg that was likely on N64, the game cube or the wii or something like that, I think it was only released in Japan. It had a pretty generic story but a ton of characters and great anime style art, and the characters were at least individually voiced in the teaser trailer for the game, where they were introduced one after another with some dialogue from the game and character art models. I've been asking around but no one seems to recognize it. I think the teaser trailer was on one of those demo cds for the old playstation, and yes other console titles were displayed on those, I remember that distinctly because I wanted the game but didn't own whichever console it was for, and back in those days there weren't that many consoles.
1:15 "In olden daye were Demons. By Magicks, Illusiouns, and Idols they catchid the Heartes of Men. Thus, fro middes the Strong the King sette him forth and sealid them. O how blessid. O how blessid...." The only real misunderstanding here is ず as negative and not a rendaku form of す(る) which you now only see in a few pickled uses like this one (but even then, it's used here for the sake of archaism). I suppose some people who don't know Japanese might wish to be informed that this text does not feature linguistic gender, but it is reasonable in light of the faux ancient language and the already ironic context.
Thanks for covering this really obscure game. I Love when content creators don't explore or review the same games every other youtuber has covered. There is really a niche for people like me, who want to discover obscure games like GötzenDiener, games from the PC98 or the FMtowns for example. Anyway, great video. You got a new sub.
Really cool idea to almost but not quite subvert the usual damsel in distress trope - she can't save herself entirely on her own, but when the means to do so fall into her hands, she gets it done.
Not exactly. While Götze does translate to idol, it is used in a derogatory way. A Götze is a false God, or a representation (most of the time in paintings) by someone who does not believe in that God. It is seen as heathenish. So the fact that Götzendiener is a combination of "false God" and "servant" seems like a mean little joke to me, which I find funny :) But maybe that wasn't intentional. Either way, it's amusing how Japanese people tend to think German sounds "badass" or something, haha.
I used an emulator called Mednaffen. Since this is a CD based game, downloading it will give you several bin files and one cue file. Keep these files in the same folder and drag the cue file ontop of the Mednafen exe and it’ll play. You can also use Retro Arch to play it I’m sure.
Lol this game is a lot like what Anita Sarkeesian suggested, with the princess trying to save herself and switching into more practical clothing....yet it is so old!
This game reminds me of Xanadu Next, DIablo and Marvel ultimate Alliance. These isometric dungeon games were popular in the 90s and early 2000s. Xanadu Next remains still my fav one of the bunch and funny enough, diablo is my least fav of the bunch despite being the most popular example of an isometric game.
The “Die” in Diener is pronounced like the “di” in discussion but slightly longer english “e” Sound, because of the “ie” in Diener. Deiner (like you pronounced it) and Diener are completely different 😂 Ofc I don’t blame you for not pronouncing it right, it’s hard. But I just wanted to point that out! The Title can be translated to servant (=Diener) of “something that people worship that is not a real god” (idk if there is an English word that would describe Götze/Götzen, i think you could say “Idol”)😅
I appreciate it, but I've been told already haha, which is why I pinned my comment! Also ''false gods'' is the translation you're thinking of. So it's not a one word translation but it's the best English is able to do, hehe. It's kinda fun to think about when other languages have single words for something specific where English needs two or more words to describe it.
GötzenDIENER. Eeeeeee. Not Diner like a small Restaurant. Diener = Wiener but with a D. Diener is german and means servant. A "Götze" is a False God Servant of the False God
I know now it's pronounced ''deener'' and not ''diner''. Also, I don't know why I didn't mention the meaning of it, but it means ‘’idolator’’ or ‘’servant of false gods.’’
The opposite of Idol Master.
Götze = False God
Diener = servant
Servant of the False God
Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
God bless you.
Server of Idols. Glaub mir ^^
@@CordeliaWagner1999Götze ist idol
There is something truly magical about the aesthetic of 90's fantasy anime.
Agreed, it’s such a vibe.
Yes.
Not only fantasy, but many other genres as well. Fantasy and futurism have some special charm.
Bro have you listened to the music?! It‘s so magical
all 80s and 90s anime is magical
wtf that voice acting was crazy good
neat highlight on this unknown game though
Voicing the cutscenes was a nice touch. I love obscure Japanese retro stuff. Subbed.
Man I thought I was the only one interested in this game. The arranged OST is amazing. RIP Kenichi Okuma

Thanks! I appreciate it. Yeah obscure and unique games are some of my favorite things ever.
You really got a lot of "Huh?"s out of me for the making of this.
Huh?
Woah, I’m blown away at how great the voice acting is. Awesome content.
This game looks awesome. Thanks for sharing this little gem!
Thank your for presenting GötzenDiener to us, to me. Your channel is fantastic and I am very interested in your work. I wish you much success and joy creating videos!
Thank you! Creating videos like this is a real passion of mine and I am so glad to hear people enjoy me rambling about obscure media
@@Forrealsyall Of course! I can see your passion and I hope you can further indulge in video-making
man i truly appreciate the effort you put into the production especially the voice acting♥♥♥
Your a g for the voice acting. Seriously

Eyy nice. Baroque is super cool, I only played it a bit, but it’s such a cool game
the saturn baroque is pretty good too :)
@@hawkstar73 , good to know. I want to play the PS2 and Wii versions, too.

@@VioletEuphonium, never heard of it. Thanks for the tip, I love Sunsoft and it's game composers and songs. I'll definitely check out!
Right now, I'm playing Resident Evil Code: Veronica X. Gotzen Diener reminds me of the Survive Horror genre. Awesome game and video. Thank you.
Awesome, I adore Code Veronica

This was cool to learn about. Shame its so short
The short hair fits her very well
Fantastic job man
This looks great !
With one slash of a sword she gave herself a grown-out pixie cut. Or is that demon just stood there while she was leveling her sides?
Yeah it’s a really steange shot haha
A little fan rework of this would make a really great game!
Nice little game. Lovely custcenes.
Very cool and interesting game🫶🏿!
Lol
GötzenDINER you said.
It's okay.
It's more like
Götzendeena.
You got the Ö right. I'm impressed.
I appreciate it but this is like the 10th comment I’ve gotten about it haha, so that’s why I pinned a comment a few days ago
WOW ending so cool!!!
You did a good job with the voiceover.
Wow this looks great!!
Thanks for the recommendation ❤
this looks so cool
Götzendeener ;) But kudos for getting the Umlaut right!
I pinned a comment earlier regarding this haha
Had to go check. Gotzendiener translates as "Idolater".
Haha I totally should have mentioned that innthe video, oh well.
Exactly: "god" + "servant"
Not exactly. While Götze does translate to idol, it is used in a derogatory way. This game would benefit from a remaster/remake. If I ever play it, I will miss the voice acting!
Another Forrealsyall video raghhh 🫂🔥🔥🔥
Thank you!
This is one of the most beautiful 8/16 bit games ever. The west really got screwed. The PCE was awesome.
Yeah, I agree. There’s so many cool games Japan got that I wish we got.
This time it’s the Princess’s turn to be the hero, or heroine. Kinda reminds me of that Hulu movie.
Lady be like "I have no pants and I must scream."
Woah the art looks like Princess Maker
"published by Gainax" aha
Hopefully in future they re-release the game on an online store or on Steam, but translated.
So basically do good and live life for life and the dead will stay dead along with evil and they will sleep forever
Interesting concept. Would like to see it revisited.
Cool video! 😎👍
you and your friend did a great job on voiceover. what is the easiest way to play these old PC-Engine games?

What what is this why don‘t we have more from this and tHE CHARACTER ART FROM GAINAX?!
Wow
Pronounciation of "Götzen" was spot on but "Diener" sounds like "deener", not "diner.
Cool game!
Now I want to play this. HOW?!
I feels like Diablo before Diablo. I wonder whether Blizzard North looked up to it?
I only clicked because I wanted to hear an American pronounce "Götzendiener".
I am not American, haha. I’m from Norway.

it's not pronounced GötzenDiner but Deener

It is German for Idol Servant
GötzenDIENER.
Eeeeeee.

Diener is german and means servant.
