I first discovered Castlevania through your channel more than a decade ago as a preteen. The experience of playing the games had a formative impact on my life and inspired a profound love for not only the pre-SotN titles, the post-SotN titles, and the Metroidvania genre but also gothic literature and gothic art in general. I’d like to thank you for that, and I’m pleased to see you finally returning to the series. Between its moment-to-moment gameplay, visual design, music, and atmosphere, Castlevania was once a trailblazer in video games as a medium, and I hope every day for its proper, triumphant return.
I wonder if he'd talk about R-Type, especially III and Delta, those games are damn hard, but they have such a cool dark atmosphere, it's like going from Final Fantasy to Shin Megami Tensei.
I was so happy to see every single playable character, including Christopher, the first to ever do it twice, and Sonia, appear in the Ode to Castlevania DLC for Vampire Survivors. What a series love letter.
I wish you talked more about Belmont’s Revenge’s soundtrack because OH MY GOD. While it’s held back by the gameboy’s limitations, the compositions themselves are some of the BEST of classicvania. I recommend Shimoine’s VRC6 remixes of all the regular stages to see what I’m talking about because it’s just SO GOOD.
You were the one to introduce me to the Castlevania series Johnny, so it’s amazing to see you speak about the series again after so long. It’s become my favorite game series of all time, if it wasn’t obvious by my channel lol. Your Sonic content was a gateway into a lot of other series now that I think about it, Castlevania being chief among them for me 😂 Can’t wait to see your thoughts on the DS trilogy! The Dominus Collection is nearly perfect (with a few minor issues that aren’t a dealbreaker at all tbh). Fun fact too, in the Japanese version of Belmonts Revenge the Axe sub weapon is actually switched out with the traditional holy cross! Very fun to try on replays.
I absolutely adore Belmonts Revenge. It's a game that took me by surprise with the clever platformin, sick looking bosses, and the great sound track. So glad to see you finally reviewing it. Also a fun fact, the Japanese version of belmonts revenge has the cross but replaces the axe. Guess they could only fit two sub weapons.
Guess they felt the fireball made a straight-shot weapon like crosses redundant (though still wicked useful). Ideally itd have all three subs, and I think there's a hack for that.
Honestly, I like the idea of Sonia Belmont as basically an ancient and powerful mage Belmont. Like, being the earliest and most powerful, with the power being diluted but still there with later generations, with later generations using more technology to handle Dracula ever growing in power. Especially since the older generations didn’t have the same advanced technology so they needed a super mage to fight him to stand a chance against the old Dracula. I like Leon more, but Sonia is still fascinating. Also, feel free to do shmups Johnny
I feel like the main reason Sonia was even written out of canon was because she came from a time before Castlevania had a proper timeline and narrative. Correct me if I'm wrong but before her it was Trevor who was considered the first Belmont to face Dracula. Then you have Symphony of the night coming out before this game causing legends to contradict with things such as Dracula's motivation and Alucard being born before Lisa was a thing. Heck Bloodlines arguably made zero sense story wise until Portrait of ruin. This is also why circle of the moon and the N64 games are also noncanon although I'd argue those games would've made sense in the timeline.
Adventure Rebirth is one of my favorite games in the series. That soundtrack is sublime, the levels have just the right pace, and the added key for alternate paths gives it some solid replayability. I also adore that Hard mode not only makes the enemies and fights harder, but will change the levels as well It's criminal that those Rebirth titles are currently lost on the Wiiware with no means of getting them legally. The death of the Wii/Wii U truly was a brutal loss for a lot of quality software...

And since you mentioned *Treasure,* you GOTTA talk about the excellent work they did on Gradius V. ❤🔥❤🔥 Also happy to see you both noticed and mention how much older Christopher Belmont is by his second game. Possibly making him the oldest active Belmont to combat Dracula and his forces. If you don't count his descendant Julius during the events of "Aria of Sorrow" onwards. Even then, Christopher seems even older by "Revenge" lol and outright gray. At least Julius still has color in his hair. And lastly I must also add, yeah. A Castlevania spin-off video would be interesting, but I also think there's merit to looking at some of the different Castlevania fan games, like The Lecarde Chronicles and Castlevania ReVamped. Castlevania Fighter is another good one I'd recommend as well.
I find it humorous that my grandfather owned Castlevania: the Adventure and played it during his downtime when he went out deer hunting. When I found his cartridge for it, he let me have it because I played it so much more than he did. Never got past the first level.

You are right that Igarashi had a hand in solidifying the current timeline, but it should be known that over the recent years, behind-the-scenes lore documents from Castlevania Bloodline's development back in 1994 were leaked showing a fleshed out timeline and family tree being established. It basically lines up with what the modern timeline, with Trevor preceding Christopher, etc. This makes sense because Bloodline's manual put a lot of emphasis on the franchise's history, as the game's hook was supposed to be their history finally entering the 20th century

The Castlevania reviews have been among the channel's very best and funniest, so it's great to have a new one. Really looking forward to the eventual videos on the GBA and (especially) DS trilogies too. And speaking of handheld centric videos on series previously covered, with Super Mario Bros' 40th anniversary coming next year, it's the right opportunity to do a big catch-up with the remaining Mario platformers left to be reviewed, with most of them being handhelds. The Land duology, a Round 2 of the 5 handheld ports of the original 2D games (SMB Deluxe and the Super Mario Advance series. They have enough QOL changes and new content to justify the revisit imo, especially the Yoshi's Island and Mario 3 ports with their new levels), the NSMB series and Wonder.
Castlevania adventure is the type of game that makes you consider if you actually like video games when you sit down and try to get through it. Video game equivalent of tinnitus
The credits of Belmont's revenge were the only source for Soleiyu's name so for decades that's what he was called, It wouldn't be until the Castlevania Collection that his name would be fixed

A Johnny Schmup special? Hell yes!
3:04 yes this is a great idea
What a wonderful night to have a cat cameo.

"would you be interested in hearing me talk about" yes, johnny. yes.
3:04 Yes, but do Final Fantasy 9 first please
Castlevania adventure is the type of game that makes you consider if you actually like video games when you sit down and try to get through it. Video game equivalent of tinnitus
Talk about the shoot'em ups.
Idgaf about castlevania but man getting another VS video in less then 2 weeks is so sick. God bless somecallmejohnny
The credits of Belmont's revenge were the only source for Soleiyu's name so for decades that's what he was called, It wouldn't be until the Castlevania Collection that his name would be fixed

The Belmonts being descendents of Dracula sounds awesome
For my family, my forced family tradition was Church on Christmas Eve then dinner party at Grandma's. For my friends, my forced Christmas tradition was watching Silent Night Deadly Night.
When can we get 20 minutes of Johnny taking care of and playing with his cats. I need it more than any other review.
