My PWD Jack-Jack self trained to be my epilepsy service dog after being with me during a few gran mal seizures. He can sense when I am not feeling well and will prevent me from moving forward or standing before I have one. He is obedience trained (we continue to extend that on a daily basis because he LOVES IT) and is by my side at all times. When he senses a seizure is eminent, he breaks the heel position, comes in front of me, barks in a high pitch tone and will back me up until I sit back down on the couch or whatever is near. My daughter is actually a certified professional trainer and has helped us TREMENDOUSLY. My sister's pedigree line of PWDs is how he came to me. I actually helped her whelp his momma's litter. That has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. He is 3 years old and I adore him. I developed an allergy to dogs as a young adult and have missed having one for too long. There's not one negative thing I can say about this breed! I am beyond grateful for the bond I have with my beautiful boy. His love and loyalty to me and my family is phenomenal.
My PWD Zeke is my bestie. Here is my list of PWD benefits... 1. Size Zeke is a med sized dog at 45 Lbs full grown. 2. Super durable. He is down for anything I can do and more. Hiking, swimming, riding in the truck, hunting fishing, whatever, he's down. 3. No shedding. BUT, the grooming is a must. His hair grows very fast. 5-6 weeks its got to be done. I am the DIY type and got trimming gear. Tried to go cheap and that was a bust, Andis trimmers $200+ other gear another $150... Im an old guy, it takes me most of the day to trim him but he loves it. 4. Ultra obedient! He isn't the smartest dog Ive ever owned but he is no dummy and it's remarkable how obedient and easy to train he is. He knows dozens and dozens of commands. I swear he understands every word I say. He never has accidents in the house and tells me when he needs to go out. 5. He is very chill. When we go out in the world Zeke gets the zoomies and loves to play as much as any puppy does but when we go in the house he able to settle down and be very calm and polite... He is very gentle with humans and other dogs. He is not aggressive. Sometime he pretends to be when we are riding around in the car or when he is on the zip line. but he is a totally friendly and has never growled or been nippy with any animals or people. Believe me, I could say more. really love this dog-o...
My PWD is the love of my life 🥰 - Great with kids , people and other dogs - No shedding - Does not stink when gets wet and nobody can tell I’ve a dog in my house - Everything he does is to entertain us Very, Very ACTIVE!
Hi, adam I was raised with two and recently took a scratch test and found I was allergic to dogs (was testing for something else). Never had issues around them unless they were rolling in pollen! Everyone is different however I would try to be around them and see what happens or consider allergy shots.
I have two of them. They are awesome. Be advised that they REQUIRE plenty of exercise and playtime. We spend a lot of time on walks and throwing the ball to wear them out. Great for a family. Very loving creatures. No allergies.
@pwd_sushi is my best friend. She is friendly, very funny, very delicate, and not only does she love the whole family (and it is very big) but she also loves and is known and loved by the whole neighborhood 😂❤. We live near the beach and she couldn't be more happy each and every time (and thats almost every single day) she sees sand and water😅 It's amazing to watch them play and interact and see the world through their eyes and be reminded of how amazing it is!🎉
Did you get yours into a puppy obedience training class? They pick it up soooo fast and love it! Agility training is like showing off for them! I adore my sweet Jack-Jack!
Bernedoodle are very big dogs. I have a friend who has one and he is a giant at 155 lbs. He is beautiful and a very good boy but the his size is often challenging. Porties are somewhat new to the AKC roster so they are not as well known as other dog breeds who have been in many generations human families. I would say very much like a golden retriever but no shedding.
My favorite thing about the Portuguese water dog is that they are hypoallergenic I think that would be a perfect dog for me because I'm allergic to dogs
@Ana Paula ... "Do Portie pups like to cuddle?" ... Portie's are the Kings & Queens of cuddle, morning noon and night.. Always by your side.. Always!.. Cuddle-meisters... Their smarts are next level, very, very smart.. Our Ms. Lilly is going on 14yo.. An obedient athletic intelligent fun & cute member of the family... Cheers, the Schneider's
I have a 3 year old PWD and my sister is a breeder as well. Some are a little more energetic than others. A good breeder should definitely be able to recognize that sort of thing by the time a choice is made for a forever home. They do need exercise and love tasks. Obedience and agility training is incredibly fun for them and they pick it FAST! Cuddling is a favorite!!!
Hi my name is kaia Pratt I am 19 years old I have a brother we have cerebral palsy and I am allergic to dogs but I think the Portuguese water dog would it be good for me I would really like to adopt a Portuguese water dog in the future
THIS also makes them a great breed...ruclips.net/video/3_WuDK-7wxE/видео.html. Sadly few will even see the water today. Yes, we have experience with the breed, our 'Bo' helped establish the first PWDCA Water Trials so many years ago. WOOF WOOF "Pirata" 'sez hi.

Hello! My daughter is allergic to some dogs. I've read these dogs are great for families with family who have allergies. Thoughts?

Are there any breeders of Portuguese water dogs in South Africa?
Why are they not discussed that much on line and in the US? Darling. I am in love /w Bernedoodles - they remind me of them slightly and energetically.

Do u know where they might be available in Europe or where i could search for them?
We can transport to europe.
HOW PROTECTIVE ARE THEY? CAN THEY BE PROTECTION TRAINED? ARE THEY TERRITORIAL ? WILL THEY BARK WHEN SOME ONE APPROACHES MY VEHICLE ?
I’m getting a dog poty of September😀
Do you know if they hunt birds? I'm looking for a good hypoallergenic bird dog.
Not really Not a natural
My favorite thing about the Portuguese water dog is that they are hypoallergenic I think that would be a perfect dog for me because I'm allergic to dogs
Yes they are great pheasant hunter or any other birds .. they got webbed feet for water hunting ..
Do they bark a lot ? So cute to see them ...
MyPWD Zeke will bark if he hears something but he is shuts it down quick. So yes but defiantly not a "barky" dog.
Very loyal and willing to please
😇😇😇
Thank you for your video! Are they hyper all day? Do they like to cuddle?
