Hi I had a male PWD for over 15 years. He would have been 16 on June 26th. His name was Buoy all black wavy coat and he was the best dog ever. He just passed away this May 10th the saddest day ever. He was my dog he followed me everywhere. He loved to swim and he was a great swimmer. We got him a pool and he used it all the time. We took him to Martha's Vineyard he would swim in the ocean and run on the beach. He was 85 pounds and very strong. He loved chasing squirrels and playing fetch. He loved to take long walks. We live in New Hampshire and took him camping and hiking. We got him from a breeder in Reading, PA. They were 8 hours away and we went to meet the breeders for an initial interview and met our puppy and his parents You will love your Portuguese Waterdog they are the most loving, intelligent and loyal dog. ❤
Hi Tracy, I'm so sorry for your loss. I thought I was reading my story, I too had a male PWD, Bruno who was 1 month shy of 16 years old when he passed away. He birthday was Jun 25th. Bruno was 60 lbs, he came from VA and he went to the beach ever other year, traveled with us to visit friends and on vacation in Canada. My friends and family have been so supportive when we lost Bruno, I think about him every day. He was so special, smart and made us laugh with his antics. Bruno was in a newspaper article when the Obamas were deciding about what dog breed to get. I will always have a PWD and hope to get another male soon.

Did you know the Obama's lost their PWD too May 8th, Bo was 12. We all had the best dog ever. Sounds like Bruno was treated like the best dog he was. I prefer a female because she will be smaller. Here in Central Oregon and we hike a lot and we kayak a lot and there are a lot of trails with rivers and lakes! There is a dog allergy in the family and this sounds like the perfect breed for us! I am just in the dreaming phase, but this really put a great smile on my face tonight!

Is there an advantage to one over the other? Or is it just personal preference?
My pwd is 12 years old her name is Maji which is Kenyan for water. She is full of life people are always so surprised at her age. She's smart and a character that loves to entertain humans. She knows 13 tricks. We have a cat and they get along just fine, we recently got a puppy and she does not like the puppy at all. She terrorizes this poor girl. We had another dog for years with her a giant schnauzer, they got along great. Its gotten to thr point where the puppy is scared to come inside. Now the puppy already had a very skittish temperament and to be honest it's mostly just noise maji barely ever actually bites her just scares her and might get one light bite in before I yell at her to stop. She's never drew blood. I know this is long but any advice this puppy is so sweet but already so skittish and my female pwd of 12 years old is just terrorizing her its been about a month...
I live on the bay and was wondering if these types of dogs will jump in the water ? I was thinking of getting two but don’t want to chase them if they decide to jump. Lol

Our female porties (from different litters and unrelated) were both 60 pounds and a healthy weight
My family has had two girl porties and they're the best! My cousins have had boy porties and they're super awesome too

Does this breed make good retriever gun dogs ? Only found out about them yesterday after looking at videos of Irish water spaniels.
