- Season 5 is the final one! I would say that they have time to fix this ending but... Freema's apparently not coming back for this season.
Which is a shame, but she must have had a good reason for it.
She's done such a good job as Sharpe, hopefully there's at least some explanation and some scenes of her in the first episode of S5 to at least attempt to explain why she's suddenly running away from everything that she's ever wanted...

I finally did it! This is an updated version of the video I did for Sharpwin for Season 1 to Season 3. I put this one off a little bit because I needed a little mental distance from it after that finale...
I think they only did that to Helen's character because Freema isn't coming back for the final season, which comes out next month.
The feeling I get is that she always puts 100% of her heart into her characters, so she must have had a really, really good reason not to come back. Some people think that something must have happened behind the scenes, but I guess we'll never know?
Either way, hopefully nobody sends any hate to Freema or the other actors. She's just doing her job, and acting out what she's been given in the scripts. This ending obviously sucks for them if we don't see her *at all* next season, but obviously don't get mad at her for a choice the writers have made for her character.
That's what I have to say about it. I guess we just wait until next month and see what happens next.

A disappointing end to a beautiful love story. Max and Helen should have gotten their happy ending even though Freema had to leave the show. Helen was Max's rock in all the low, difficult times of his life. She was always there to support him when he needed it the most. He will never love anyone the way he loved Helen. He was in awe of her. He said it himself! So sad that the writers had to tarnish her character and make her appear to be unsure of herself and what she really wanted.
I know right! They decimated her character because they needed a way to write her off the show that made sense for the characters! But they didn't need to write her off *like that* :(

Everything changed for me when she said she wished she did not let him in for me i knew that was it it was over before it began. I could tell it was not going to be good after that so i stopped watching.
in season 1 the psychic says to Helen, "Honey im sorry, its never gonna work out between you and Max" (12:53)and now I realise that she was right
A deliberate choice by the writers to not make it work out though :( They could've just had Helen and Max get married and then say she had to stay in London to take care of the clinic. Freema was leaving, which is fair enough for her, but the writers didn't have to ruin her character in the process!
Didn't watch and can't watch season 5.
I loved them together and still want to hold on to that memory.
Please if they ever get together in S5, even for just an episode, please do let us know. We all need closure❤

I am so frustrated and torn over this.
I do believe that it should be everyone's choice to leave when they please but I do wish Freema had seen this through. In light of recent developments and now that we know she meant to leave after S3 I have to say that I blame the writers a little less than before. They had their hands tied and needed to find a way to oust Helen out. But still, since they knew Freema made a sacrifice and stayed for one more reason they should have made this their last season. The show should have ended on S4. With a wedding and the happy ending Sharpwin and fans deserved.
Instead they built all this angst, destroyed Helen's character by making her selfish and having doubts about Max. I mean we had witnessed this beautiful love story for 3 seasons and it was completely wrecked in one.
I respect Freema's decision to leave but frankly I think that if the writers wanted another season (don't see why) they should have killed Helen. It was the only way to honour her character and who she was. Have her sacrifice her life for Max or a patient or the hospital. Her abandoning Max and all her memory being disrespected in S5 (as I've read in the reviews) was the worst decision of all.
In all this, I feel for Ryan who was a fan of this couple, as much as we were, and now he has to stay there and finish his contract as a professional despite any disagreements he has with the writing team.
I don't know if I will stick around just to see his story play out but I can honestly say that this show has been my greatest disappointment of all.
Yes, 100% I agree that they should have ended it last season when they already knew Freema wanted to leave. Let them get married last season, tie everything up, and give everyone the closure they deserve, fans and characters included.
I still respect Freema's decision to leave though.
Edit: or at least just ended last season as it is and had it be the last one. I know marriage would've been too soon last season. But why couldn't they have done it this season and also had this one been the last? That's all they needed to do to give everyone closure.

I have to politely disagree and say that actors should always put themselves first. We don't know why she left. It could have been for mental or physical health reasons, or because something bad happened on set, etc.
Whatever the reason, even if she just simply wanted to leave, she should rightfully put herself first, in my opinion.

But when it comes to work, every professional has to have respect and consideration for others.
In Freema's situation, she wasn't fired and it's not a disease because she's finishing shooting the first season of another show (I hope she finishes this one).
That's why the world is going through a very bad time, everyone puts themselves first without caring much about others....
In the profession there must be ethics and respect for all those who depend on some work.
A doctor cannot abandon a surgery, an engineer cannot abandon an ongoing project, and artists are no different.
It's not just turning your back on fans without justification and not suffering any consequences.
I know many don't agree but it's my opinion.
Commitment to any work begun is critical to building a good reputation.

There should be some kind of punishment for the entire production of the show (writers, writers, cast, etc.) for holding the audience's attention for so long, and in the end making it all fall apart.
I also think the lack of commitment is a huge lack of respect and consideration for fans who wasted their time.
It's not the fault of everyone on the show! I don't think 'punishment' is good at all here, or maybe in general for these kinds of things.
Each group of people has their own specific job to do. Don't punish everyone else for choices that basically only the writers and showrunners made.
And they did what they did to Sharpe because Freema decided to leave. But I do not advocate or agree with Freema being 'punished' either.
She decided to leave, but we should go a bit deeper than that, and think to ourselves, why?
Did she get treated badly on set? Did something else bad happen behind the scenes? Either way, I think she is 100% valid in her choice to leave, even if nothing bad happened at all. It's her life, she doesn't need our permission to live it.
Personally, I think she must have had a big, important reason for leaving. I think that Freema puts everything she has into her characters - there's no way she'd leave a character she put over 4 years of work into for no good reason. I also think she deserves better than to be vilified by any 'fans' of the show.
Sorry, not to get mad at you or chew your head off or anything. I appreciate that it's upsetting not seeing a storyline end the way you were expecting it to, and that there are plenty of fans that might even be angry about what we're left with.
But a character in a TV show isn't bigger than the mental health of an actor, or the health of anyone working on the show. They're all just doing their jobs on several, really complex levels.
We should respect them for that, and for what they give us once all of that hard work has been done.

I have some things to say, and I cannot at all keep them.
The entire series is based on medical, personal and group choices, made by them and those close to them, and is a complete help to others.
All the characters help each other, and in s4 they turn against Helen instead of repaying what they were once given, help.
We all know that Helen had family problems, like everyone else, and if there was to be an ending, it should be an ending that builds on their history and how family problems can and could be resolved and give a new direction to life. our life.
The two times Helen appears or is heard about at S5 it could be a long distance relationship where both fight for the patients, for the family for them and for all the themes they brought up during the show.
A good show is not based on the number of episodes it reaches, but on how impactful it remains in our lives.
I prefer to stick with S3 and keep in my head the hope and the story that yes, every problem is a battle, and that they fought for Helen's past and were able to show her the new life she deserved and Max also, the hope that they gave to others, that they approached with us and the life that each one of us off any screen deserves.
Not a deep hole that no one comes out of, but a deep hole where no one needs to stay or get there.
Create your own version of the story and always have hope in yourself and others!
Not all stories have a good ending that we hoped for. Love and be loved.

They absolutely positively deserved better and more importantly Max deserved better. I was really happy he took so long to take off his ring and that they delved into that cause people don't know how hard that is really even though emotionally he was with Helen but he still loved Georgia. Helen's mom was a piece of work we all deserve our fairytale what'd she mean. Truthfully we didn't need the whole London bit I suspect Freema might have wanted to leave from then but it really was a waste him going there can't get work and then leaving and she not returning they just wasted her last days. Their like Tiva to me even though they got together they are unfulfilled sad really. Am sad the elevator scene wasn't in this edit
They definitely deserved better! I think Helen might be coming back next episode? But I bet it's a one-off to close out their story.
Good on Freema for having boundaries and leaving because she wanted to, although she wanted to leave at the end of season 2 I think, so really they managed to keep her around for an extra two seasons. Which is lucky for them, because she's a brilliant actor and her character was one of the best.
All the London stuff was probably them figuring out a good enough reason for Helen not to stay with Max, because they had to write Helen out knowing that Freema was leaving either way. But in doing so, they really messed with her character and it's such a shame for such a fan favorite couple, too.
04/2024. Who's with me. Been my 3rd time rewatched New Amsterdam but I still can't have courage to start watching Season 5. I always stopped at Season 4. It pains me knowing that Dr. Helen Sharpe's not gonna be on the Final Season. So I will never watch it. Oh my WinSharpe couple. Maybe on the other lifetime they can be together. I'm being delusional, ain't I?

This has been very traumatic the ending was for Max and Helen. They could have at least married and had the baby. And forgot about the die hard fan’s 😢 I kind of wished she would be in the last episode.❤
She might turn up this season, nobody knows. It is horrible that they didn't just let them get married, and then have Sharpe have to stay in London for most of this season as an explanation for Freema leaving though!

This is based on a true story. Is that what realy happened with Helen & Max? Its fabulous acting and their story is why i watched it Season 5 was not good without Helen.
What did the writers do to helen at the end?
The actress wanted to leave, so I guess they wrote her out. Her and Max were about to get married, but she jilted him at the alter. It's a shame they did that to such a good character, but Freema did amazing with the scripts she was given, in my opinion!

Because it's an important issue that impacts so many people in real life, and seeing it in a TV show makes it feel more grounded and more realistic, as well as making the characters feel more 3D and well rounded as people
