- Coldplay have just released their 10th studio album "Moon Music", which sees them writing some of their poppiest material yet! But it kind of had me wishing the band would come back down to Earth! I break it all down on this edition of Rock Album Review!

Great review. You summarised how I feel about the album and Coldplays music in recent years. They have become a commercial enterprise, too concerned with being relevant and chasing gen Z. The great moments like ‘All my love’ are bittersweet as they remind you what the album could have been.
Agreed Paul, if they stopped chasing trends it'd be a much better album!
I don't see Coldplay as a band anymore, just as a brand that's latched onto whatever is zeitgeist. It's essentially been a Chris Martin solo project for a while now. Like yourself, I wonder what the band, especially the guitarist, actually 'do'. Perhaps they help carry all Chris' electronic gear or something.
I'd love to see them do what REM did with Automatic For The People and surprise everyone with a raw, stripped back album. They'd have to give Jonny his guitar back though.
Watch the Zane Lowe Interview
Exactly, give them the guitars back and see what happens
Why do people think just because Coldplay changed means they’re not Coldplay anymore? People change and it would be extremely hard to write in the same style for years and years when you yourself are not the same anymore.
I totally expect bands to evolve and follow their creativity, just the results vary sometimes in the final quality. Chris Martin is still an amazing artist, just doesn't feel like a full band effort to me
there's almost zero guitar. Has anyone looked into this? Was Buckland in the hospital or something? did they kick him out of the band?
I just don't get this album at all. Or the 5 before it for that matter. It's like they are trying to cater to a different audience
@@jw-lk1pe I don’t think they are trying to be anything. I think they are happy with themselves and therefore are writing what they want to. I think it’s missed a lot of people because they’re content with themselves and that doesn’t resonate with most people.
@ whatever the reason/motive is, it's objectively a bad album.
Where is Buckland's guitar? Was he even a part of this album?
@@jw-lk1pe that is a fundamentally incorrect thing to say. All music is subjective, just because you don’t like it and bucklands lack of guitar definitely doesn’t mean that is an objective fact. What??
Every day life was decent
Yeah it's definitely better than this album
it's an awful album. 1st 4 are great, after that it's all self-indulgent crap. Even 4th album is teetering on edge of self indulgence.
Really wish they would throw the synth in the garbage
Same, it'd be nice to hear some guitars on a Coldplay record again
iAAM for example is like a lost Viva era song
@@benjamindavis4974 it’s quite good though he stole/ borrowed the song title and sentiment from Sam Ryder who released a song with the same title a year or two ago lol
Self titled track is about Chris's attempted suicide
Thing about Coldplay is that they're not really a rock band.
I've been saying they're rock adjacent
I’ve listened to it about 10 times now. I’d say my biggest issue is, it feels very short, and although I love the epic ethereal landscapes, there aren’t many ‘song’ songs here. When iAAM started, that was what I was waiting for, but that song is painfully short too. At the end of the day, I’d say it’s an optimistic emotional experience, more than an album. Blink and you miss it. X&Y was an album. We Pray is the only track I’d skip.
Totally agree, it's a strong album in terms of sonics but not a lot of real "songs" to grab onto
What Jonny is on the entire album
i liked there first 5 album i havent listend much ghost stories i liked individual songs from wach album since ghost stories. i hope next album some old school more indie ish songs. i feel mixed on moon music i like some song like Good Feelings and all my love it wasn't the most cohesive better than MotS
I agree, it'd be great to hear them strip things back a little
I don’t think Johnny Buckland has been in Coldplay for about five albums. Hang on, neither have Guy Berryman or Will Champion!
It’s such a shame.
Agree with you they need to try a heavier sound, and at least return to their brilliant sound as if their first two albums
Not heard the album yet, hope it’s good but, on the lead single and previous two albums, I think it might be a stinker
(Coldplay fan who regards Parachutes and AROBTTH as two of the very best albums of the 21st Century)
Note, my opening line above is sarcasm.
Totally, they need to bring back that old school "band" sound
I gauge albums now by how many songs I add to the band's playlist. After about ten listens of the whole album, including the full double album edition, I'm adding five songs. feelslikeimfallinginlove, We Pray, All My Love, Karate Kid, and IAAM. 5/20. This is actually a pretty strong selection compared to recent albums which had one or zero songs added. The last album I really liked was Ghost Stories.
I gauge albums the same way, by how many songs end up in my playlist! I agree there's some solid songs on here to add to a good Coldplay playlist
All My Love is the final single too
I really dig that song!
Coldplay are coming back to Earth though or have you not been following the stuff about their final album
I anxiously await "Earth Music"!
We pray sounds like Eurovision contest song. Their worst album. Banal and generic.
That's a pretty apt comparison, sucks they've come that far!
Briefly skipped through this on iTunes. Even more forgetabble than the predecessor. I don't mind that Chris Martin has announced they will only do one or two more albums...
Two more albums even seems like too much, you're right it's very forgettable
Chris Martin also said, I think it was after Ghost Stories or A Head Full of Dreams that Coldplay might only have one album (‘thing’ as he referred to it) before stopping. The stuff since has been dreadfully dire (I’m a big fan of Coldplay). The last album had one amazing song (that 10 minute Pink Floyd style one at the end) but the rest was so sickly bad
I’ve not heard anything other than the lead single yet. I’m hoping this one’s a return to their alternative/indie rock sound and style and a return to form. But not expecting anything much at all
@@TedGruberskyI actually don't think that Coldplay will ever return to a more guitar based/indie sound because that is not popular at the moment and won't sell many units of albums, even if fans of old would love that.
@@murdockreviews and I reckon you’re probably right. Such a shame that it’s all about what drives the sales figures or popularity - when this is already a very successful band who’ve made their millions. But yeah, the pop world is theirs now
At least we still have those great records from their days of being ‘the new Radiohead’ - that’s forever something fans like me can hold on to. Phew!
@@NickCinoMusicLP11 will be a musical, LP12 will be like Parachutes/AROBTTH
Coldplay haven’t been any good since their 2nd album… everything since then… has just been albums full of filler..
Ignorant, viva la vida and ghost stories is good
Very true
I think you should give Viva la Vida another listen. Most people rate that as their third best album. First 4 albums were good imo but yes, after that it was very mixed.
The album is OK......I guess! It's got a couple listenable songs (but not something that I listen to on a regular basis.
Agreed, a couple good songs but that's it
Is it rock though?
Its rock adjacent 🤣
I love coldplay but these last two albums and a head full of dreams are pure money making albums. No passion.
Not rock😂
Rock adjacent lol
This album sucks. We all hated good feelings 😂
Lol It's typical that I liked it then
@@NickCinoMusic yes lol
Disagree
Full moon edition has 2 added gems
I think this is top 5 for them
Been a fan since 02
@@sudipvyas2040 lord no more songs
@@hectorThechilldudeonacouch check em out I think they’re great 🫡
