I love the Charleston area. So many great restaurants in their downtown area. If the weather would have permitted you should have taken your dingy over to California Dreaming Restaurant just across the river from that marina. The food is awesome and so is the view. They also have their own docks you can tie up to while dining.
We visited the Charleston Mega Dock several years ago and had one or more meals at the Charleston Yacht Club which is right next door. Back then the marina ran a free van into town which I think also ran in the evenings.
@@tryingnottosink9107 ok great, but knot sure you guys ever get up this way, we are in upstate Ny, we boat on hudson river, not the best but all we have
That is pretty astute to stay out of the shoals with the sea state being what it is. My sail boat had a 6 foot draft and I had to pay attention to that in rolling seas near land! 😁🛫
@Larry Butler 73 back atcha an hope alls well across da Ashley!! Last time I was there was prob 8-10 years ago. great restaurants there in charleston. lived there for many years. bill murray lives downtown there now and you are likely to stumble across him any given day on the peninsula.
I agree with you. Charleston City Marina is one of the most disappointing stops on the east coast. We have worked to bypass it on every cruise, which isn’t easy since we are a sailboat, but we never stop there anymore.
It is fun to be next to all the mega yachts, and the staff is very professional. It just makes no sense to not have a basic amenity like a restaurant. We love the city though.
They cannot put another restaurant in the flood zone…the current restaurant is grandfathered in. Literally a 10-15 minute walk to 30 restaurants on King Street, but I can think of five with in three blocks…Google much?
@@morganfalkdesigns I hear what your saying. A lot of cruisers pick marinas that have on site facilities, including restaurants for reasons of mobility. For us it’s because my wife can’t walk very far since her chemotherapy. She has neuropathy in her legs which is very painful. But what are you going to do, sit home in front of the TV? So we chose to cruise as best we can until our final call.

We would have liked Mike's much better if there were staffed right. We waited for ever to get drinks and eventually gave up. Not the barmaids fault. They were over worked and had no computer system.
That marina is odd. There's so many good places to eat downtown, but yeah, not really walkable. California Dreaming across the Ashley, but it wasn't as good as it used to be years ago. Over on the Mt Pleasant side, they at least have the Fish house. And if you go up Shem Creek some good places there.
Continued further and see you were able to hit up some good places downtown. We lost some great restaurants the last several years but gained a couple of good ones. I try to stay out of downtown as much as possible
We actually looked at buying a slip at the marina on the west side of the bridge and because it's not easy to walk anywhere, and parking is a disaster too, we passed on the whole idea.. Though slips are priced very good in the 50k range for a dockominium about a 1/4 of what they sell for in Florida.
You guys should consider keeping your boat at one of the marinas in the Myrtle Beach area for the winter months. From Wacca Wache Marina up to Myrtle Beach Yacht Club your boat would be sitting in freshwater instead of saltwater and there are usually very cheap flights to the Myrtle Beach Airport through the winter months.
Charleston harbor marina has a tiki bar and 2 restaurants. Stop by on your way south and let us know. Got South Seas into Charleston 2 weeks ago (58YF). Would love to have dinner and pick your brain about upgrades on our Hatteras. Fair winds and following seas.
We were under the impression that they could not take a boat our size. Or perhaps they just did not have a large slip available when we checked. We would much rather dock in that area.
@@tryingnottosink9107 they have a huge transient dock (a dock). Good prices on fuel. As far as their long term spots, they are limited to vessels over 50 feet. They have approx 20 for 58-65 foot.
Yes. We have Niaad Stabilizers. They work well. We are getting the seals serviced just before we leave on this year's trip. It is especially important on the 53s and 58s since they are 16" beams. They tend to rock. They are less needed on the other Hatteras'.

They could definitely use a bar out on the water but don't think that's in the cards. This is what it looks like in Feb: ruclips.net/video/UCYXwoRISx8/видео.html
Thanks for the info. Makes no sense to spend that much money expanding the marina without adding a restaurant. I guess that's the difference between a city dock and a private dock.
There's a reason why there is nothing in terms of amenities at that Marina. It's "Charleston" and the whole city has an attitude. They want your money, but they don't owe you anything. You're not a local, so you don't matter. Judging from the building behind you at 8:20, (It's the old Rice Mill) you're at the Ashley River/Charleston City Marina. They claim to have over 50 restaurants there, but as you say, they're all so far away you can't get to them. Oh, you can buy transportation, but get there on your own? Nahhh... You're not a local, so you don't rate anything. MUSC is right across the highway there, and they control most of the land in the area, so nobody will ever be able to build a restaurant or decent grocery store for provisioning. Most of the whole "Lowcountry" has the same attitude. We avoid the whole area. It isn't set up for anything but short transients.
We actually like the city a lot, and have a great time there. We just did not understand the marina situation. It seems many city marinas have the same issue. Ours in Philly included.
