Let me clarify a few things. Thao originally came from a well off family, which allowed her to have her education and started university in America. Then her father left the family and took the funding with him and forced her mom (who used to be a housewife only) to open up this little restaurant.
Thanks for clarifying that Kyle because normally ONLY wealthy VN families can afford to send their children to study abroad...especially USA where international students pay 3x the tuition rate of American born students! I really admire the Mom's work ethic. Waking up at 3am every morning!! How much she loves her kids and thus the sacrifices she makes for them.
While I applaud Thao's courage to pursue her dreams, she needs to prioritize and understand for her mom. Her education, while enriching, is an unbearable burden on her mom, forcing her to work to the bone. Thao needs to grow up and realize it, that Dad isn't here anymore to financially support them. Thao needs to pause her education and help her mom stabilize the family financial situation. Then and only then should Thao resume her education again. Thao is just being selfish. Grow already Thao and stop being a burden on your mom.
Thao has a loving and devoted mother. The mom has sacrificed her life to give her daughters a successful future. I hope the daughters become rich and successful so they can give the mom a wonderful life that she deserves.
Thank you to Thao and Thao's mom for sharing their stories. If you're in Saigon, have some hu tieu and or bun mam at Thao's mom's place. 114 Tân Sơn Hoà phường 2 Quận Tân Bình 6 AM until 12 PM (Get there early!)
Kyle Le Dot Net - I am living in Lincoln Nebraska too. I saw Thao’s picture on the wall in the Rec center. If you ever come here to do the documentary, drop me a message here.
What a beautiful family you have. The boundless love of a dedicated mother and I love seeing that Thao genuinely appreciates and enjoys her mum's company.
Wow.. What a woman. The love this woman has for her daughters is so heart warming. I wish her the very best, and that her ultimate dream will come true.
It's a hard life for her mum but i believe it's also rewarding to know you are contributing to your daughter's happiness. That's what all parents want.
Thanks Kyle for telling the story of a mother who does everything she can to fulfill the dreams of her daughters. Such selfless acts happens everyday all over the world but thanks for highlighting Thao's mom! I will definitely put her on my list of restaurants to visit when I go back for Chinese New Year!
Quang B, why people in the West are always say "Chinese New Year", its Luna New year that celebrate by most East Asian People, not just the Chinese. In Vietnam its called Tết ok?
most of your logs feature you as the main narrator, but in this case, you have launched a very touching and strong profile of this mother and daughter relationship, and their respective passions, .. to be fair most other youtubers also fall into the addiction of featuring themselves, you will give the world a better picture of what Vietnamese feel and live through than just cheap and tasty street food. you have struck a vein of a subject which you should develop, .. good luck
+De Cai Shi its a lot easier in post production when im the narrator. Videos like these are quite time consuming to film and edit but the most rewarding. Thank you for watching
Typical Vietnamese story about challenges and sacrifice. Thao's Mom is just one of many Vietnamese parents that sacrifice their happiness so their children can live their dreams. Thank you for sharing.
I was fortunate enough to eat at Thao's mom's place and had her delicious Hu Thui. I tried it without putting any added seasoning and it was incredibly flavorful. I finished every last drop in the bowl. Being there really made this trip more personal by adding a connection to a family here in vietnam other than my host family. Thank you for making this video and sharing their story.
dang0088 da where did I say poor? Do NOT put words in my mouth. Deserving comes to mind. Kindness is there along with just being a good person... Sad that you can not get that simple concept.
@ +dang0088 How do you know they are NOT poor? Are you their accountant? Financial advisor? Ones struggle is not always written on the face. So, don't try to be smartarse ok?
Poor people dont go to usa for education, duh. gofundme is for mostly poor people, there are lot of poor people in vitenam that needed the money more than these 2. Her father is rich. vietnam need to make her father pay for her, this is a lesson to most people dont pop out kid u cant afford.
I think a lot of people who watch content can only see things for face value. They see someone living in a nice house and automatically assumes that they are rich without understanding the entire picture or paying attention to the entire video. It's clearly stated in there that the mother started the restaurant due to family difficulties and she had to mortgage the house for her daughters to continue their education abroad. So clearly at one time they could afford it, but then things happen... like fathers walking out for another woman, etc etc. well, then you wonder, why not just sell the house? Then where is she going to live? What kind of work can she do? Keeping the house is very important. There are always many sides to every story. Don't just see things for face value and put your own standards on other people's lives. Everyone's situation is different and unless you personally know them then you can't be quick to judge.
Been there done that. Mom is super hero, my mom support my study in the State since 2009 to 2015. After that I got a scholarship to study in Finland and been here ever seen. I will come back to visit my mom this December. I cant wait. Living on your own is tough, a lot of time we are struggle with money and stuffs but we are not sharing with our mom because it will make them even more worry about us. Best of luck Thao, btw you look just like a friend of mine, maybe she is your doppelgänger :D
Thank you for this beautiful story. It made me realize how lucky I was to be able to move to America with my family. I used to live in Quan Tan Binh phuong 5. I will def come and support her mom when I am back.
what a coincident, I know her older sister, we went to college in Philly together. I really like your channel btw, I as a Vietnamese who've left Vietnam for education in the states since 14 yrs old and now I'm 25, never get a chance to explore my country, you seem to be more Vietnamese than I am lol. Very inspiring channel.
Such a very charismatic., her mother must be very very ( " Proud of her." )... it's such an inspiration that she has someone like you to look up to...Your the BEST!!!...KYLE
This girl is beautiful inside out and her mom is typical of a vietnamese mother, always sacrificing for their kids at all cost. I know they will make it and have a happy life soon.
Shes very strong, talented and independent. This is tough for her but you know things that happen today shape her tomorrow, if not for wht happened she may not be who she is now and follow the path that shes choosing now. And I believe with her experiences she will succeed. Hope the best for her family:)
Great blog Kyle Le...one of the best story you"ve blogged. Very moving story, what a great mother. These girls are very lucky to have a mother like that..i will definitely visit her shop with my friends next month in saigon....must watch video
One of your best. Good work Kyle!!! This video reminded me 2 people, my Mom’s sister and my father-in-law. I definitely will visit this place when I go back to VN.
Cool story. Sounds like they have a tough life. I hope that Thao can land a successful career to help out her mom. I have a Vietnamese friend that is a girl that lives in Lincoln Nebraska, and she also went to the same university. Maybe they can connect, so that my friend can help her out.
I love her mom! And maybe I shouldn't be. But I'm amazed that she sounds like a native English speaker! I can't imagine how long she's been learning English, to sound like she was born here.
Kyle, Hu Tieu Nam Vang was made popular in Cambodia in the old capital of Phnom Penh but it is originally Chinese. the Teochew Chinese people brought it from China to Cambodia and it is also called Hu Tieu Trieu Chau (Teochew). It is also popular in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, places where the Teochew merchants traveled to over the past 600 years (Chinese merchants have traveled the seas around China since 1400s). There is a popular NYC restaurant called Hu Tieu Trieu Chau in China Town.
Thanks for another great , touching episode. By the way, thanks for wearing the Blue Jay hat. I'm from Toronto, I'm not a baseball fan or Jay's fan but I love it when I see its symbol, a part of Toronto culture.

Just wanted to let you know your edits are fire bro. I like the cuts between the mother and daughter and the dichotomy between the two worlds. Stellar stuff! Where's my drone video? Lol
In Asia most if not all parents would try means to see their children have the best education. But there is also a risk of failure if child did not make it. Success in education is one...but whether can be success in our career. Study in US is not always affordable by most. This noodle lady is a capable person. So I wish their family well in the future.
"Thao is a former student of mine..." you mean she was an English student? her accent and command of the language is pretty good. how long did it take her to get to that level? also, do you have recommendations for English schools in Saigon?
Good thing you clarify it. I initially felt something was misleading here. No way any street or small foods vendor in VN can pay for their children 's international tuition rate in the US. And I guess Thao could have been in the US for abt 7 years based on her English fluency so it is not a small sum of money totally.
Thanks. I just made the wildest guess. She learned English quick. Hope things work well for here and her family. It is often that the Vietnamese parents go a long way and defy all odds to scarify for their children. Keep us posted.

Can this little restaurant generate enough profit to fund the living expenses in America?
im guessing no cause her mom had to get a loan using her home in Vietnam
So essentially, the income from the resto is used to pay the interest for the loans

Definitely will, next year :) great video as usual, Kyle!
I'll be in Saigon this week. I'll make sure I drop by.
Her mom is so caring. She sacrifice her life for her daughters' dreams.
The sacrifice for family is so strong in Vietnamese culture. Very heartwarming story. Will definitely go out of my way next month to eat there.
What a beautiful family you have. The boundless love of a dedicated mother and I love seeing that Thao genuinely appreciates and enjoys her mum's company.
Love is giving...and there are no boundaries in her heart!
