Our latest video post is all about the guide hand (i.e.the off hand).
The purpose of the off hand is to establish control of the ball and support it until its ready to be released.
Now, there are several different variations of off hand positions but the most common positions seen among great shooters and the one that I would recommend, is covered in this video.
Watch this video if you want to learn the best guide hand techniques to use on your shot and if you want to learn how to relax your guide hand for more consistent, more accurate, and more fluid shooting form.

Love how he says if you didnt like it let me know so we can keep improving this channel. Wow don't ever hear that one. RESPECT
If only modern-day social media was like this
For everyone struggling with range, check if u leave your guide hand at your set point level, it should go with the ball to the end and this will fix many peoples shot
Is it fine if I use the bottom of the palm of my guide hand to help get more power because I’m comfortable with it and if I shoot only with shooting hand I have less range.
Have been playing basketball my whole life. I’d say I’m an above average shooter and my shot consists of a thumb flick. After looking at shooters such as Kyrie who use their guide hand thumb on their shot, I’ve noticed that as long as the ball’s last contact is off of the shooting hand’s fingertips, the shot is fine and won’t go flying to the side(as someone might expect from the shooter using their thumb). While I don’t think a thumb flick should be taught to someone learning to shoot, you shouldn’t change it if the you’re comfortable with it.
Yea, I definitely agree as long as it doesn't negatively affect the shot.
I have a question, then. I use a thumb flick as well, but it does affect my shot, and very badly. Sometimes when I shoot my off hand slaps the back of my shooting hand and the shot goes a few meters in the wrong direction. It’s really bad. However, it only happens while shooting threes. I can hit midrange pull-ups, turn-arounds and fadeaways just fine, but when I shoot a three the non-shooting hand darts off towards the shooting hand and changes the direction of the shot. It started to happen after I came back to playing basketball from the summer holidays. The season is kicking off soon, and I’m worried I won’t be able to fix it on time
@@SplashLabBasketball The Bible says in John 3:16-36 that whoever believes in the Lord Jesus Christ shall not perish but have everlasting life, the Bible also says in Romans 10:9 that those who declare with their mouth that Jesus Christ is their God, Lord, and Savior they shall be saved. Revelation 1:8 says that Jesus is the alpha and the omega. Luke and revelation is the ending times, and Jesus is returning back. So are you going to submit your life to him or no? Narrow is the path that leads to the gates of heaven, but only few people find it. The gates that is the path to destruction is where many people find it! Jesus loves you SO MUCH! That he died on the cross, and was resurrected from the dead 3 days later to give us eternal life.
@poweroftruth9258 thank Jesus and you friend 🧡 ❤
Is it fine if I use the bottom of my off hand’s palm (but not the thumb) to push the ball for more range.
Good video. It's hard to find people online who analyze basketball with this much detail. Keep the videos coming
Amazing! The quality of your videos is second to none on youtube. Best teaching videos period.
Thank you! Sorry this one took so long!
Splash Lab Yep man, you produce great stuff. High quality and very granular breakdown. Keep up the great work!
Yes thank you keep making these videos, What helps me with the videos is every time I watch them, I do it in the air as a I watch them, then I do it with a ball.
Loving this channel so far, now I know 3 channels I can trust for sure when it comes to shooting, shotmechanics, pro shot, and now splash lab
I'm definitely going to wait for each of your future video...I think that channels as pro shot, shot mecanic and yours are great to understand in a deeper way the fundamental mechanics of shooting that the greatest nba-wnba shooters use...from a french fan ;D
amazing been waiting for a while WORTH THE WAIT BEST RUclipsR HANDS DOWN
Damn dude you deserve SO Much more subs
Your videos are absolutely amazing. Keep rising and keep uploading videos!!
When you said that players use their off hand thumb for extra power I was relieved because I notice I do that, i find that it makes it much easier to shoot at long distances so that I'm not trying to power it with my shooting hand and end up shooting too far
Make MORE VIDEOS! They're awesome!!!
Great job man, You really break down all the points in depth. Keep it up
Thx really gives me great tips to use when shooting a basketball every time i watch your vids
Nice breakdown got to learn to be comfortable using less of my guide hand then using more of it
this was awesome, I never really think about my off hand when shooting... I think this will help my consistency, keeping all the variables to a minimum thanks for the video!!!
Wow, you are GOOOD with your shooting videos. Much help from your videos.
These vids are great keep it up and I think this channel could take off.
Love this channel a lot please dont stop making vids!!
Those are some good tips for people who do not play basketball and who what to know
Could you make a video about shooting releases like the index finger, middle finger , cookie jar and all that
Yee
Splash Lab what iis the best? middle finger only down? or cookie jar? or index finger?
Im not splash lab, but do what works for you. I used to try the index finger release and later I tried the middle finger release like dirk and harden. I found that with the middle finger I was more consistent but I think It comes down to personal preference. As long as it goes in and it's comfortable for you.
IdKForDahWin I'm sorry, but can you tell me what is "cookie jar"? Please) Just I'm from Ukraine, and don't understand you slang :( I wonder, very!)
Its basically four fingers down on the release , which is also known as the cookie jar release. It''s called the cookie jar because when you shoot you pretend you are grabbing a cookie out of a jar. For example klay thompson and steph curry shoot like this
AY THANKS SO MUCH THIS WAS THE MISSING PIECE TO MY JUMPER
I was trying to figure out what i needed to do better as a shooter.
Thank you.
1:17 Great shooters IM DEAD

Martin Lillard Yea man, my bad lol. I'll definitely be releasing videos more frequently. I'm glad it helped!
You really helped me shoot better
Splash Lab Don't feel too pressured to produce video's too quickly. I understand that getting on a weekly schedule is often times more conducive to garnering a subscriber base, but personally I care much more about the quality of video's compared to the quantity. Everything so far has been great!
Agreed
Good vid, mind doing a vid on Kobe"s form?? Also how do you score a lot of points in a game and get rolling like a shooting mentality, cause I have good mechanics and hit shots 80 percent of the time and model my after Kobe.
Yea man, Kobe's form video is coming up!
Splash Lab When you make the Kobe shot form video, he shoots the ball above his head.
+Splash Lab can you do Carmelo Anthony shooting form breakdown?

Funny how I stumbled upon your channel just looking up Curry Highlights hahaha
Loving your channel already, keep up the good work bro. Will you also do a video about Tracy McGrady's shooting form anytime soon?
Hey!
Great video! I think that this length of about ~5 minutes is ideal. Keep the videos coming.

Besides from that, another great video and I am looking forward to even more from this channel!
Could you make a video about how to make stronger hands, wrists? What are nba players do for it?
Amazing video man
Can you make a Video to show you how to get into your shot and where to place you hand to start your shot
thanks for this video bro one of my biggest problems in my shot is i accidentally use my guide hand to shoot for extra power making my ball have no spin.
it's a good video! but, sometimes it's quite hard to keep the the ball steady in your hands before taking a shot when your guide hand is on the side of the ball and the shooting hand is on the top or behind the ball
Great video it helped me a lot
Off hand has always been my problem. I’d shoot the ball lights out then one day have my off hand too low and forget everything ughh
thanks for the vid. really helpful!!
Hey does anyone have any tips, my guide hand is coming off the ball too quickly, come someone plz help
so many helpful secret inside ,nice vedio.

extremely insightful and unique video. great in depth analysis! just one suggestion- try not to sound so monotone ;)
a video on Russell Westbrook would be great! Just an idea.
Great video man!! But when are you going to upload kobe's shooting form???
you made me improve
Tried out the thumb flick , and got 29 pts. Do you think you could breakdown Kyrie's mechanics ? Splash Lab
Idk if this would help anyone, but I added a thumb flick kinda like steph's to my shot, and it really helped a lot especially off the dribble. The shot feels a lot more fluid and rythmic, idk does anyone have any insight?
If it works then it works
+Isaac Noh ...
Jalen Williams what? it's true lol. A lot of people in the NBA have weird forms
it help me

Could you do a video on how to follow through?
Super helpful - now all I need is a few thousand reps!

Could you please do a damian lillard form shooting and break down his form please because he has a good form
Can u make a kyrie Irving shooting form vid and footwork of crossover please!!!
hey, could you make a video on what finger is best to release with? middle and index relesae
this is a helpful vid.
I don’t have much range cuz I’m a kid and I use like the bottom of my guide hand’s palm but not it’s thumb to flick the ball for more power. I’m comfortable with this so should I keep doing it or only use my shooting hand.
It is really helpfull i was using guide hand's thumb for more power on the shot and when i shot the ball from trey it always go in but then they told me that it was mistake and can you make the video how can i fix that kind of problem.thanks!!
My average right now is 18 hopefully improving my jumper gets me to like 21.0pg
Great vids so far, whebmn can we expect a new one.
Wait, does the off hand come off as the flick starts, or as the shooting arm starts?
Splash, you subscribed to pro shot shooting system? A lot of the things you teach are the same. Anyway great vid, I never would have release my off hand before my wrist snaps. Great video!
When is the Perfect Shooting Form video going to be finished?
thx bro 💯
Thank you!! Really helped!! I actually make a T with both of my thumbs for my off-hand release. It keeps my off-hand in proper motion, is that proper as well?
make a vide on the thumb flick that Kyrie and stephen curry use
I got a question. As I shoot my off hand pushes the ball as well but the basketball goes into the rim most of the time, do I have to fix it or it works it works. Thank you
Can you make a video about the thumb flick
Good stuff
Spash lab. can you show us how to Carmelo anthony shooting form..???
hey its Rico again how do I find a good set point for my jump shot?
how do you keep your guide elbow from stick out like stephen curry mine sticks out when i try to replicate it
I don’t know if it just me but when I shoot a basketball my gide hand tends to drift to the right or of the times I was born with loose ligaments and flat feet but I really enjoy basketball what should I do
i think curry's thumb flick is just there to help him rotate his palm and doesnt affect the shot at all when he releases the ball, idk tho
I agree 100% bro. I'm the same way.
It's why I air ball every three without it.
I want to get rid of my thumb flick because every time I shoot I'm using It. It's hard to change it!
Is it bad to drop the offhand too early?
and when is that form video coming out?
Taller people have longer arms in comparison to their head/neck area. What if a 5'8 guy finds that the ball is kind interfering with his vision when he shoots since his arms are short? The ball blocks the right eye a bit (this wouldn't occur to tall people).
im 5'7 to be honest I dont even notice it really. I just look at the rim and shoot.
I'm 5"9 and I really think the best way to shoot for people like you is to use the turn a lot so your elbow and hip can align to make the shot straight , btw if u use the turn u can still see the basket before u turn , then u can just hold your follow through towards the rim
Bball_Fan_4Life You 5'9 with short arms or long arms?
very good video. can you make curry driblings and crosovers video?
My guide hand keeps moving a lot when I shoot (no thumb flick) help please
Can you please do a video about Kyrie Irving's shooting form
When I shoot I hold the ball on my off hand Palm and fingers, should I just use my fingers to hold the ball?
No that's the correct way, as you bring the ball up to shoot, it should be one smooth motion. Whatever helps stabilize the ball more, but usually your shooting hand can't palm the ball and balls on your fingertips. As soon as your about to flick your wrist to release.
Can you do shooting form of _KD_
You should do a video on Kyrie Irving's form
I still can't get my off hand off in time
Jonah Taylor me either
Can someone please tell me why my off arm won't stay bent and it is straight
