Basketball players literally have THE WORST work ethic😂. I used to think I was working hard by getting shots up before school, lifting and conditioning HARD 3 times a week, working out with my trainer all the time. It wasn’t until I started running track when I saw there really levels to this “hard work” stuff😂. For people who are decent at any race from 400m and up, you have to fight for your life at every workout. Imagine “hell week” for basketball, except it’s even worse and that’s what you do most days of the week. Basketball workouts are so physically easy and players would still rather play 2k at the crib 😂.
Hmmmm I see what you are saying although I still think you have to work incredibly hard at any sport if you want to be successful and make it to a higher level.
I used to be really good at basketball and then I quit because I wasn’t enjoying it but now I am getting back into it, recently I’ve gotten into a really bad shooting slump and it’s not like I can’t hit in game I am missing form shots next to the hoop constantly, Should I keep practicing or is there more to it?
If you have goals and a passion for the game, then of course I think you should continue practicing. A slump can't be the thing that holds you back if your truly love the game.

Great video man any tips for high school players in Europe and how to deal with less access to facilities outside of school (is it worth practicing on a double rim for example)?
I keep trying to improve, I train upwards of 3 hours for basketball everyday, but my jumpshot is holding me back.I keep changing bits and even if I find a form I like, I can't replicate it/do it over and over. I'm really trying but I don't know what to do.
I think if you are struggling with being consistent, one thing you can try is filming your shot during a workout. Then you will get a better idea of what changes on each shot.
As a middle school basketball player who played on my B team last I have found your videos very informational. These videos help me implement these tips to my game because I know that I need much more improvement and these really help, thank you. I love this game and I sometimes am not able to go workout some days because my family gets busy and they can't take me. This makes me mad because I know what it takes to make it to college or even the pros and I can't work nearly as hard as I want to. Do you have any advice for this situation?
I understand the frustration. Especially when you can drive yourself to workouts or practices you have to rely on others to do that for you. But you can still find ways to get better just at home if you can’t get to a gym. And also, trying to find friends or other players who could potentially give you rides, anything to make it to workouts. Keep grinding!
I agree with a lot of you said, but I have an important observation about the concept of "hard work". I completely agree for example that if you want results, you have to make "sacrifices" like not going to a party. My point is that are some non-negotiables that are even more important, in particular sleep (science is pretty clear that the average person need at least 7-8 hours per night, and teenagers might need even more). And also I'd say a LITTLE bit of free time just to read something for example but that's more personal. But in general my idea is that you wanna do too much, you'll risk to burnout, so I think that, given that hard work is crucial, there's still a level where it's too much, especially if you surpass that level on a daily basis. One suggestion that I have is to plan your life as much as possible, in order to see the "big picture" of what you're doing and then see the areas where you can improve. Also crucial to eliminate futile distractions like social media or videogames - even 15 min per day are almost 2 hours per week! To be clear, I'm not sure that by doing this one might get better results at basketball or even the same level. Just sharing my perspective
I definitely agree with what you are saying! And for example, I grew up not playing video games (my parents didn’t really let me). Did it suck sometimes? Sure, but I look back on it and am so happy I spent that time doing other things. I guess the point I was trying to make is that ideally you could have balance in your life, but that isn’t the most realistic thing for people who really achieve great things. You just have to be obsessed. Again though, I really agree with a lot of this so I appreciate the comment!
@TuckerRichardson my mom didn't give videogames too and now I'm grateful for that 😀 I don't know if "balance" is the right word for what I meant though, I would call it "not always being on the edge of burning out"... By the way, I think that future athletes have to get through this process in a harder way, just because they have to do school as well and 5/6 hours minimum a day are already occupied. While if one wants a great academic career, for example, he must work hard but at least he can focus on that only goal.
Yeah I agree, even a high school athlete today compared to when I was in high school has so many more distractions, so many more things in their life that could take them away from focusing on improvement. Also burn out is definitely real! I got somewhat close to this a few times but never really went through it like I know some athletes do. I think it was because I was working so hard on my own terms. A lot of times when a kid is being pushed by a parent or other outside source, that is when burnout can occur.
Eat a lot and get in the gym? haha no but in all honesty, skinny hoopers can get by. You just have to learn how to use your body and physicality even without more weight. But, you need to be lifting no matter what to gain strength.
just to let you know if you wanna watch that there is a xmas tournament in kortrijk from tomorrow 28 to 30 at diffirent places around kortrijk but i recommend you ''lange munt kortrijk'' u12 to u19 teams from belgium and around the world
Hear me out not every league in the world gives the same amount of money to the players and have the same amazing coaches staff advance technology around them. That's why progress is different from every country. And that's why their are players that's not on the same level than some. It's not that they suck it's just that that's what they can.
True, I don’t disagree with what you are saying. However if you are in a tough situation basketball wise, really the only thing that will help you improve that situation is to take responsibility, not to make excuses or blame things outside of your control!
Hi Tucker. I have the option to stay in the team I'm currently am with my friends or take the risk and go to a better team closer to my house . What do you think I should do
Depends how old you are. If you're in high school, I do think moving to the better team will give you a better chance at improvement and playing at the next level!
Because I live in Canada I cannot play in my basketball corte because it's outdoor I cannot go in indoor basketball Court because I'm still a kid I only play basketball in my school practice and my practice what can I do.
Try and get extra time before and after your school practices to shoot. If you are really young, you might have to be patient and wait for your time, but finding ways to get in a gym when possible is going to be important.
I really liked the middle section about selfishness vs showing yourself but in the league I'm in we mostly play zone defenses so how should I balance passing and be aggressive towards the bucket in a zone. (We mostly play against 2 3 zone)
Ugh first of all I hate that they play zone 😂 but through cutting and even driving, splitting gaps, shooting 3s, getting offensive rebounds, etc. there are a lot of ways you can still be aggressive.
How do you balance working hard/pushing yourself with not getting injured? I’ve always been a very injury prone player and I want to work harder but I feel like when I do too much I just get injured again. And then coming back from injury how do I balance getting back into it without reinjuring myself?
I'm not a doctor and not an expert on this stuff. I think it depends on the types on injuries you have, and if you are doing the same movements every workout. But I honestly don't even want to try and give advice. Obviously there is a lot you can do with prehab or injury prevention.
So im 14 and I play in hungary.we have team practice 4 times a week.every single day I either lift weights or do plyometrics and also either go to the park to shoot or do ballhandeling at home(mostly because it’s really cold outside) of course I do this next to team practice. Is this good?
If i shoot 30 hs 3 pointers open as an elite shooter should i expext to make at least 90 percent? Ive been practicing w out a hand in my face. I fugure i need to make 90 percemt before i start traing w defense? Only doing 18 to 25.
Hey Tucker, I love your videos but I have a question for you I am a junior right now. I just transferred high schools so I could play more basketball. and I work and train every single day to get better. and last year I got cut from the team now this year I am on varsity and I know I work harder than everyone else on my team, but I struggle to show myself on the offensive side so I get no minutes. How can I earn myself minutes? It’s frustrating because basketball is all I do and it is so important to me.
Living in rural Australia a lot od the training I want to do is not available, and practice with others is not accessible. What can I do, please help me I want to play nbl basketball, and as of right now I’m on that trajectory but I need more
Incredible video. Learning a lot about life. I unfortunately quit at the highschool level but gonna be a life long basketball enthusiast. Question, what do you think differentiates you from an NBA player? Dont mean to disrespect you one so bit because you made it just been wondering this causs i feel like a lot of European players are right there.
Thank you, and that is a great question! Well, I worked out with the Warriors this past summer and competed against guys in the NBA, EuroLeague and other top European leagues. I would say I'm really not that far off from that level. I truly believe I can get there one day. The biggest difference is the athleticism and the speed of the game. I definitely felt sped up when I was playing with those guys this summer because of the tempo and athleticism. Skill wise, I would need to become even more consistent and dangerous with my shot. IQ wise, I really think I am right there. I hope this helps!
Really loved this video but i have a question. You see around a year ago. I had was in that mode just like Tyler. Wake up at 6 every day to shoot, then school, then gym, then chill and then i would workout again in the evening. Looking back at it, even though i missed parties, and time with friends, that was one of the happiest times i have ever had, because i was chasing my dream, and keeping the promises i made for myself.. But for some reason i stopped, and now doing a single workout feels hard. For some reason ,even though i love basketball i dont feel like i have the passion. But i think a reason has do with the fact that i have been overthinking alot about going to the next level, and what if i dont make it etc. Which kinda made me go from working out because i want to get better and because i love it, to working out because otherwise im going to overthink and etc. So honestly how do i get it back, because that geniune feeling of seeing improvment when you put in the time, after all the "sacrifices" i made (i always came home late so almost never ate dinner with my family) is such a good feeling. I just want to get back into that "mode"
Hey man.its my last year of high school but I reclassed up so I’m actually 15,turning 16 in 12th grade and I’m not from America. I force myself to get around 4 hours of training every but I don’t feel like I’m getting any better and looking at those 5 star 9th grader all over America really makes me wonder if basketball is for me. It’s my passion I truly want to make it as far as possible but I don’t even have the proper ways to train myself like I don’t have a coach, my parents made me stop practicing in a club to focus on school and the only thing I train myself with is a ball and a portable hoop. And now taking a look at my situation made me wonder if I should really continue bc no one around me is trying to help me succeed. Do u have any advice to help me please ? Basketball is the only thing I have and I don’t know if I would be still here if I didn’t had it.
I just started playing basketball in 9th grade, I’m now in 11th grade and just made the varsity team after transferring from a school that didn’t have one. As a new player do you have any advice for me?
So when you get the ball you just blindly drive to the basket and it results in turnovers? I would recommend playing slower. When you catch the ball, don't dribble it right away, try and slow down and read the game.
Hey Tucker, I’m a freshman in high school and I am a small guard that’s good at shooting. Lately in games I feel like my 3 pointer just disappears, do you have any advice?
First off, check my recent video about shooting slump. I go through slumps all the time, but I get through them, and so can you. And focus on other aspects of your game where you can be effective outside of just your shot. When all you think about is your shooting, it’s gonna be tough to regain your confidence. Focus on the other things in your control and the shot might just come back!
I’ve gotten a lot of comments about this. I’m not an expert at all. I know going through national teams usually helps because those coaches have more connections in the US. I would say you can still be reaching out directly to college coaches with emails, highlight tapes, etc. but again I don’t know enough about this.
Try and do more live stuff in your workouts. You need to take a closer look at what you are actually working on and if it is the types of moves or shots you get in games. But yeah overall, playing more 1 on 1s, 2 on 2s, 3 on 3s in your workouts will get you ready for games.
Hey Tucker i work hard but i feel as if i dont work hard enough to reach my max potential. If allowed to i would get up as early as 5am just to get shooting or dribbling workouts in. My slight problem is when i shoot outside before school i always get scared that i am annoying my neighbours that are sleeping and my mum hates it when i play in early mornings as she wakes up super easily. So i stopped doing it I know this is a lame excuse but i feel as if this small factor may having me fall behind, compared to other player around the globe. I have recently started going to the gym, solely to gain strength for shooting and muscle in order to absorb contact. Im also not athletically gifted, onky 5 8 at 15 and have a really low vertical. My strength is that i am quick and can change directions well, with good handles. I know this is not enough and if i want to make college or to the professional level, this will not be enough. Sorry for the yap sess, thanks Tuck.
Well, games and training are really different. What I always recommend is to try and incorporate some live play (1v1s, 2v2s, 3v3s) into your training so you can apply whatever you have been working on. This will more seamlessly translate to the game.
I agree the framing needs to be reworded but Don't be selfish is about making the right play.. What's so hard to understand?? The decision making is horrid when you tell players to be selfish instead of being aggressive in spurts since the game is fluid. I've watched coaches from high school level and up, literally wait for certain opposing players to start playing ''selfish'' cause most of the time they know it doesn't impact winning like you think it does...
Yeah I mean the whole point is that it is about reworking the types of players that are being produced. If a kid works really hard and has talent, I would want them to be more aggressive for my teams success...
Hi i live in Bosnia. I am 6 feet 17 and a half y.o. not that athletic, decent shooter. Been playing ball for abt 3 years but never seriousley. Is there any chance i go pro if i go all in now. I really wanna do this but as you said i don"t have discipline and really wanna improve at that
Listen, I think committing to something you really love, even if you don’t succeed, is incredibly valuable. Meaning if you go all in, and don’t end up becoming a pro, you will still learn what it takes to completely commit to something that will help you in other areas of the rest of your life. So, go for it!
I’m really just confused on my ability’s rn. I’ve always been a good shooter, I’ll consistently shoot around 75% throughout my workouts (while trying to go game speed) and I believe I should be making my shots. But I’m like 2/15 rn and I don’t know why my shot is so uncomfortable.
First of all, check out the recent video I made on shooting slumps. I went through a bad one to start this season and got through it, so I know how you feel. Yeah I think finding time to get extra shots up is essential. If that means going before class a few days a week to get your rhythm, maybe it is worth it!
I live in sweden and are a starter, i have been starting for about a year now .and avereging 21 p .i play as a center who plays defens and i am a offensive beast . I usally play as a point guard /center because my team i not in the game therefor i have to lead them i'am 14 years old and are 6 fott tall
Lebron was unselfish in hs. He knew how to get in positions to exploit defence and offense. He knew how to pass and where everybody else was. He knew and ran the plays the coach wanted. He could shoot off the pass. He could bring up the ball. That's probably why they didn't go undefeated but he sure got drafted high.
When you are open , you need to take the shoot, but if your teamate is open, then you need to pass a ball. You need to understand, when shoot or pass. A lot of players are very selfish.
Not sure, but my advice if you want to dunk is to keep trying to dunk everyday. I think that is the best way to increase your dunking bounce, which is also different from just regular bounce.
You might have to change teams, or even bring others along with you that want to work. It’s a process to go find those guys! Whenever you interact with someone who seems a little different with their approach, make a connection!
Tucker thank you so much for posting this video. I watched this video a day before my game and then today I. My game at had 28 points and 15 assists while playing Mac Irvin fire the best team in Illinois and they are in the EYBL. Thankyou

But you can still find ways to get better just at home if you can’t get to a gym. And also, trying to find friends or other players who could potentially give you rides, anything to make it to workouts. Keep grinding!
I really needed this bro just brutally honest
Glad to help!
Great video it helped a lot
Let’s go!
Another W video from you. Thank you so much for this!
I got you!
hey tucker, i think the tuffest thing for me is in the summer is finding a gym to workout in cuz where im from i cant play outside
Hmmm yeah that’s tough. Know any friends who have hoops at there house?
@@TuckerRichardson i have a hoop, but it gets to like 120 in the summer so i might need to start waking up at like 330 or 4
2:16 yoo thats donar, my home city team crazyy
We beat them recently haha
@TuckerRichardson my mom didn't give videogames too and now I'm grateful for that 😀
I don't know if "balance" is the right word for what I meant though, I would call it "not always being on the edge of burning out"...
Thanks for the wake up call much love, any advice for skinny hoopers tryna put on weight?
Eat a lot and get in the gym? haha no but in all honesty, skinny hoopers can get by. You just have to learn how to use your body and physicality even without more weight. But, you need to be lifting no matter what to gain strength.
i was so shocked to see a clip of you playing at the map
just to let you know if you wanna watch that there is a xmas tournament in kortrijk from tomorrow 28 to 30 at diffirent places around kortrijk but i recommend you ''lange munt kortrijk'' u12 to u19 teams from belgium and around the world
Thank you - good stuff
Thank you for watching!
Thank you
You're welcome!
@@TuckerRichardsonAlright Thanks Man! Love Your Stuff! Jesus Loves You!
So im 14 and I play in hungary.we have team practice 4 times a week.every single day I either lift weights or do plyometrics and also either go to the park to shoot or do ballhandeling at home(mostly because it’s really cold outside) of course I do this next to team practice. Is this good?
Yes!!! You sound like you have a great work ethic, keep it up!
@ thank you your videos help a lot
If i shoot 30 hs 3 pointers open as an elite shooter should i expext to make at least 90 percent? Ive been practicing w out a hand in my face. I fugure i need to make 90 percemt before i start traing w defense? Only doing 18 to 25.
90% in a workout? Hmmm, that is pretty high level. I would say NBA level shooters would shoot around 90% in a workout.
@TuckerRichardson what about a good d1 shooter? Shooting 30 hs 3s w a rebounder
Focus on the things you can control that will get you on the court. Don’t worry about points, worry about your impact!
Living in rural Australia a lot od the training I want to do is not available, and practice with others is not accessible. What can I do, please help me I want to play nbl basketball, and as of right now I’m on that trajectory but I need more
Any opportunity to get a basket at your house? All you really need is a ball and a hoop.
great vid
Appreciate that!
Bro you played with JQ can you do a breakdown on him or explain how it was like playing with him in a video
Yeah I've thought about doing that haha
@@TuckerRichardson awesome stuff, happy holidays dude! Thanks!!
What if you dont have any time to do shooting workouts what else should i do? I only do form shootings at home
Please help me🙏
You never have time to get to a hoop at all?
Damn i watched u play against my home team Leiden. We got you next time
Hahah was a great game!
"Henry, I'm not saying that your passing and defence is bad, but you certainly cant guard me
"
😂😂😂 it’s true!
I just started playing basketball in 9th grade, I’m now in 11th grade and just made the varsity team after transferring from a school that didn’t have one. As a new player do you have any advice for me?
Don’t be passive, make your mark on the team right away. Prove to everyone you belong!
tonightg in Leiden im watching
Let’s go! On the bus now 😂
How do I get rid of tunnel vision in real games and it all just feels fast and whenever I drive I just get tunnel vision and turn the ball over
So when you get the ball you just blindly drive to the basket and it results in turnovers?
What about international player who wanna play college
I’ve gotten a lot of comments about this. I’m not an expert at all. I know going through national teams usually helps because those coaches have more connections in the US. I would say you can still be reaching out directly to college coaches with emails, highlight tapes, etc. but again I don’t know enough about this.
One question, what happens if you work out a lot but its not really translating to games?
So i stopped doing it
I know this is a lame excuse but i feel as if this small factor may having me fall behind, compared to other player around the globe.
I didn't play high-school basketball but would want to play d2 basketball since I'm still athletic any advice
You didn't play high school? I don't get it, so you don't play basketball?
@TuckerRichardson what I meant to say was I did play basketball in 8th grade but didn't play in high-school my apologies for the confusion
Thanks
Got you!
As a swimmer thanks this helps 😼
How come i can play really well in training but i cant translate it into games ( might be cuz im short but idk)
@TuckerRichardson Thanks for response, rly needed to hear this. And yeah love your videos keep up the good work man.
Thanks!
I’m not sure if there’s something I need to change or
I’ve also been getting less shots up considering I have 2-3 hour practices after school, would you think early workouts would fix this
First of all, check out the recent video I made on shooting slumps. I went through a bad one to start this season and got through it, so I know how you feel. Yeah I think finding time to get extra shots up is essential. If that means going before class a few days a week to get your rhythm, maybe it is worth it!
@Ok thanks for the advice, a second question I was wondering was how many looks did you receive your junior year
I would hit the gym in the morning if I wasn’t 14 and the ymca is across the city
Yeah that is a tough situation...do you know any outdoor courts near you?
Great video merry christmas!
Thank you, you as well!
Yooo, just dropped my first 10 made threes game
No way!!! 10!! How many attempts? Good stuff!
Took 15 shots made 3 deep ones
@N.RMWID.F love it!
When you are open , you need to take the shoot, but if your teamate is open, then you need to pass a ball. You need to understand, when shoot or pass. A lot of players are very selfish.
Sure, but to me that isn’t about selfishness. There are so many factors that go into making a “right” play.
yo im grabbing rim as a 5,10 freshman, can i dunk by sophomore year
Not sure, but my advice if you want to dunk is to keep trying to dunk everyday. I think that is the best way to increase your dunking bounce, which is also different from just regular bounce.
If you grow definitely you probaly wouldn’t even need to increase your vertical I’m 8th 5’10 and can touch rim
What country are you playing in right now
Belgium!
And how do u surround u with these workers
You might have to change teams, or even bring others along with you that want to work. It’s a process to go find those guys! Whenever you interact with someone who seems a little different with their approach, make a connection!
Tucker thank you so much for posting this video. I watched this video a day before my game and then today I. My game at had 28 points and 15 assists while playing Mac Irvin fire the best team in Illinois and they are in the EYBL. Thankyou
No way!! Let's go, so great to hear you were cooking! Keep up the great work.
Cool video but when you're from Europe it's not that easy
Not easy in what way?
