Klay Thompson is better at catch-and-shoot 3s than anyone in NBA history | Signature Shots

- Klay Thompson is one of the best 3-point shooters ever, but he's usually overshadowed by the best in that category - his Golden State Warriors teammate Steph Curry. One place even Curry can't match Thompson, though, is on catch-and-shoot 3s.
In this episode of Signature Shots, ESPN analyst Kirk Goldsberry looks at the elite skills - moving without the ball, footwork and shooting mechanics - that make Thompson the most prolific and efficient off-ball shooter in the NBA.

43 points in just 4 dribbles is freaking insane.
That's Klay. The calm freaking beast.

This is why gsw dynasty is different from the others. They have a guy that can score 30 pts a game without dominating the ball on his hands.

He can literally fit on every team.
Honestly, all 3 of them are great off ball. KD doesn't need the ball in his hand all the time, just give it to him when you want a bucket. Klay is an amazing catch and shoot guy so he doesn't need the ball in his hand. And curry can play off ball too, but he's the point guard so he would need the ball to make passes and plaus

That 11th 3 man he made against OKC in the 2016 WCF game 6 is still one of the most beautiful catch and shoot, shot I've ever seen in the NBA.
The best one is Bogut picks up a loose ball out past the three point line and Klay runs right at him, grabs the ball, turns around and flings it in. Actually, no. The best one is when he is deep middle and off rhythm, hesitates, then throws it in. Actually, no. The best one is when Iguodala flings it ahead and Klay is on the wing and shoots without looking practically. Actually!!! Isn't that the game where he had the three-point play layup in the last minute and the mid-court steal of the inbound, retrieves Draymond's save and finds Iguodala for two free throws???

Klay Thompson has a style that can work after rehab. He's not awkward whenever he's putting the ball up. His contact and cuts he's able to control and Concentrate on basically the blocking sled type contact without having to adjust back to his dripple. That catch and shoot is a pure motion. Anybody that undercuts him landing knows he won't make it out if the arena alive. But it will be interesting to see how his defense and rebounding change.
Yeah he really doesn't have the type of game that I could imagine causing problems in the future because he doesn't rely on F lettucism at all. Plus he is a really large guard. So doesn't really have to.

Klay to Curry is what Curry was to Durrant, taking a backseat deliberately for the betterment of the team while making the other guys life a lot easier. Klay easily could be a franchise player if he ever had left Warriors. Klay arguably is one of the most clutch players of all time by definition
Klay didn't take a back seat at all. He's always played his game and his role at an excellent level
@@tonyschimmoeller If he wanted he easily could've demanded to be a ball hog like Westbrook and stat pad in order to increase his value but he never took that route
@@doctorsam5771 His skills don't involve being a ball dominant player so it likely would've decreased his value. Also there's a difference between taking a back seat and playing your role. Wade took a back seat to Lebron by allowing Bron to flourish while hindering his own game. Klay doesn't do that because his game doesn't hinder anyone else's. There's no need to take a backseat because he compliments everyone and everything.
Also Westbrook doesn't demand the ball he demands pace and typically nobody is going to play at his pace so they give him the ball.
@@doctorsam5771 Nah, Klay doesn't have the skill to be a ball dominant player, he would've decreased his value immensely. Just because a player doesn't do something doesn't mean he's actually good at it but just deliberately not showing it. With that mindset you could say Ben Simmons is the best 3-point-shooter of all time, but he's just taking a backseat and chooses to let others shoot them.
Exactly, if Klay was on a team like the CAVS with Sexton, the Grizzly with Ja Morant or even the Hawks with Trae young, he could easily be the first option and averaging 25-30ppg … Klay is a 2 ways player like Kawhi, Paul George or Tatum, these players just need a good playmaker to score.
For me Klay was a Top 10 player, he is the 2nd best shooter of all time, very clutch and smart. I would take Klay over Kyrie anydays of the week, not only Klay is as good as a scorer, but he is also a great defender unlike Kyrie.
The big 3 of Curry, Klay and Draymond was already better than Lebron, Kyrie and Love, and then they added KD ? And the CAVS lost Kyrie in 2018 ? Nah these chip were too easy for them …

It's great that Klay and Steph play together. In the 2019 Finals we saw how tough Steph's life was without Klay's spacing, and also in 2020-21, although Steph dominated, we saw that he missed Klay's spacing, especially against the best teams and in the play-in games, when his life got very tough indeed.
From the other direction, it would be interesting to speculate on how Klay would do if he had to play a whole season without Steph attracting attention. Together they're absolutely lethal.

Best trait about Klay is his humbleness. He's not a diva on social media. He doesn't feel entitled to the world revolving around his opinions and views. Facts. Simpled minded people can’t compute his genius.
Before he got injured against Toronto, man was on pace for a legendary all-time great performance like his second half against OKC, which completely changed the series in 2016. They could have won that finals IMO.
Agree. Danny Green might have ruined this mans career with his 2 incredibly dirty fouls in that playoff series. The first being game 5 when Klay was shooting a 3 and Green hit him when he was in the air causing him to land awkwardly and initially hurt his knee. Then in game 6 when he hit Klay from behind/side in the air causing the complete tear when he couldn't land correctly.
For me Klay is my fave Warrior, and he is indeed one of the greatest 75 players of all time for me.
Can't wait for him to return in the hardcourt.

Time flies sooo fast. I remember the first year of Kerr, man. You just knew that GSW team is going to be nasty.

Great video! The only confusing part was that Kirk mentioned Bogut and David Lee as bigs that Kerr used to run his motion offense early on. But Lee got injured in the 2014 preseason, and missed 24 of the first 25 games.
Draymond came into the starting lineup right out of the gates n Kerr's first season. And kept the job even after Lee returned. Minor detail, but technically Lee only ran Kerr's offense early on for a few games in the preseason. I don't know if that counts, but really, just a small detail in a great vid.
