    Driving thru Rt. 1 in Saugus is quite interesting. It is a thoroughfare to get to Boston from the north with so many businesses directly on the side. It is very scenic in its own way but at the same time it is scary especially having to pull out of one of those stores onto the highway. Great video :) 🛣 🏙 🌆 🌃

    And alas, you are in Boston, my local capital; just 25 miles east of my town. Will the footage be able to reach my hometown? Let's wait and see. . .
    Great video, Jim!

    I think I drove this road when I visited Massachusetts in 2017. All those stores and fast food chains sitting on both sides look very familiar.

    I remember my new-ish Toyota RAV4 (1997 in 2003) stalling out on the Tobin Bridge in the middle of rush hour coming back from Maine. Fortunately it decided to start again before traffic started moving.

    The Northeast Expressway in Greater Boston is entirely in Suffolk County, MA that connects Boston and 2 suburbs of the county which are Chelsea, MA and Revere, MA. Keep that in mind.

    So if Route 1 was originally I-95, was modern-day I-93 also I-95? I'm trying to figure out how I-95 would have been continuous through Boston had it been built according to the original plans.

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  9 лет назад

      +griffin324 I-95 would have followed what is now US-1 South from Rever to the Central Artery where it would have become the SW Expressway branching off to the right about a mile south of the Mas Pike, Google this, there are lots of entries on it all over the place.

      Another excellent video, and a good record of the signing that existed on the Tobin Bridge before MassDOT changed the "Fast Lane" branding to E-ZPass, and ultimately got rid of the toll booths in favor of all electronic tolling. However, forgive me if I clarify your response about the I-95 routing - I-95 would have followed the Northeast Expressway (present US 1), crossed the Tobin Bridge, and then joined and followed the old elevated Central Artery through Downtown Boston. At the Mass. Ave interchange, it would have then joined the unbuilt Inner Belt (I-695), then continuing onto the unbuilt Southwest Expressway. Lastly, I-95 route markers were installed on the elevated Central Artery at one point in the early 1970s, as confirmed from old MassDPW photos. However, a similar search of old photos and plans has failed to reveal that similar markers were installed on the Northeast Expressway - with the exception of an overhead guide sign reading "TO 95 NORTH" at the north end of the Tobin Bridge (which was under MassPort control at the time) - this latter sign remained in place until about 2002 when it was removed as a bridge-wide sign replacement project.

    That's inappropriate, cccEngineer is merely stating that he enjoys the videos, I highly doubt he's a "druggie loser". You owe him an apology!

  • @venturamichael50
    @venturamichael50 8 лет назад +1

    Not building I 95 through the Revere swamps and not building the Southwest Expressway were major blunders in my opinion.Rt 1 is constantly in need of repaving and bridge replacement and the exit setups are terrible,because it was never designed to handle the traffic load it does,and even with the Big Dig,the Southeast Expressway is a logjam most of the time.

      Route 1, if it ever gets widened to 6-8 lanes, is an adequate replacement for the northeast expy. On the other hand, the swexway (Southwest Expy) definitely should’ve been built from Northeastern Uni down to Dedham. A commuter bus from Ruggles to Readville would compensate for the lack of commuter rail service there

    When you did this video did you stay in Peabody or did you stay further up the old US 1? And did you know that Route 99 which was to your right in Saugus is the original Route 1? You passed many things that have now been knocked down and put into the history books. One of them was the Hilltop Steakhouse in Saugus. Did you notice the cows in front of the place? You ended the video right on Massachusetts Avenue why did you pick that point to end the video? Steven M. Fanale

    • @Freewayjim
      @Freewayjim  8 лет назад

      +Steven Fanale I stayed in Manchester NH the previous night, I felt that was a good place to end the video as I turned around to head north through Downtown on the streets where the old Central Artery used to be.

    • @jeremyperry5548

      If it is I 93, not directly to the interstate. You pass through actual streets and pass through traffic signals.

    Did you ever figure out why they never build the extension in Revere where Sargent Street comes onto Route 1 Northbound in Revere? Well to tell you the story my dad who worked for the highway department was told that all of the land takings that he did were not going to happen because of the environmentalist. Since that time the whole thing has been nothing but a bottleneck when you leave Boston and are heading towards NH on Route One. Its always bad every single night but its really bad on Friday's. The reason is that everyone is leaving at the same time and since the state has never sone this project we have always had this bottleneck. If you notice that Chelsea had a new school which is right off the Northeast Expressway. That school was built by James F. Carlin who was a former Secretary Of Transportation and Construction. He took the job in Chelsea in 1991 and under his direction he rebuilt every school in the city of Chelsea so that Boston University could take over the education in Chelsea. Steven M.Fanale

    • @sct913
      @sct913 8 лет назад +1

      What ultimately killed off construction of the Northeast Expressway north of Route 60 in Revere was not so much local opposition to crossing the Rumney Marsh in Revere and Saugus, which actually had been bridged by a huge sand embankment by the time the I-95 project was cancelled. Rather, it was because MassDPW couldn't find a reasonable alignment through Lynn that avoided crossing the Lynn Woods Reservation, which was (and still is) the drinking water supply for the City of Lynn, which the Federal Government strongly objected to. Similar Federal opposition doomed the extension of Interstate 84 from Hartford to Providence, which would have crossed a large water supply on the Connecticut/Rhode Island border.

      Okay there’s a speed control for RUclips videos. Just tap the video, tap the vertical ‘...’ and select your desired viewing speed. You could have just Googled that yourself and figured it out in much less time than it took you to write that comment.🤷🏻‍♂️
