Hitman: Agent 47 is the new movie adaptation of the stealth-and-cover video game...and you all know how much I love movies based on video games! Here we're dissecting some of the movie details, specifically the ultra futuristic armor that John Smith sports to try to take down Agent 47. We'll be looking at the latest in high-tech armor and figuring out whether it's actually possible to create bullet-proof skin.
When we came up with the idea for this Film Theory, Fox said they'd like to sponsor us! A big thanks to them for their support in making this video happen and letting us take a sneak peek at the film to make sure we got our facts straight!

Just imagine having the graphene armor only to rub your socks on the carpet a little to much and get a static shock.
😬
Lol
well if u did c the way john smith went out...
But first off all isn’t it insulated by the skin and second wouldn’t the electricity just go on the stuff and not deeper in the body?
sucks
Even if his skin is bulletproof, it's gonna hurt like fuck getting shot. I mean, your skin can deflect a paintball but it still fucking hurts.
thesuicidefox yeah, I'd rather have armor over my skin. you know, where I don't feel pain.
Javier Beltran you would still feel pain on impact. Although i'm not sure how big the difference in pain would be, but i'm pretty sure it wont be significant as you skin probably wasn't reducing much of the damage from a bullet shot anyway.
Joshua Lee idk, never seen the shit. If it distributes the force then I don't think it'd be that painful. But then again it could act like a trampoline. Again I've done zero research.
***** makes sense.
Joshua Lee
To get through to the sub-dermal armor, it actually needs to GO THROUGH your epidermis. :/
That's going to be painful. Nothing serious, though, probably... maybe a cut and a bruise there. If it's a large enough caliber, maybe a broken bone, if it's in the right place?

Your a 3 years late
What about the kinetic energy though, a bullet could hit the skin armor and be similar to hitting a bone due to it being inside your body meaning whatever stretch or shake from the armor would be smeared directly against your insides and probably cause internal damage even if the armor wasn’t exactly broke, like using a mace on steel knight armor
The metal will make it so the kinetic energy is dispersed across the body and not a singular point
@@olp3850 yes but that doesn't mean it's completely dispersed. You'd still break a couple if not a lot of bones since there's no padding to slow the bullet down. The only thing slowing the bullet down is your flesh and bones.
@@cptclonks7279 the graphene stops the bullets by stretching, it absorbs the force through elastic deformation. you wouldn't break bones so much as burn up from friction.

Before you guys start taking out your 50 cal sniper rifles and shooting each other in the face because you have subdermal graphine armor, you also have to realize that shit's going to block the bullets, but not the force.
So yeah, you might not get penetrated by a hot metal object, but you're getting decked in the face at a max of 60,000 psi, and while even graphene could stop a huge amount of that pressure, it's still going to feel like you're getting hit by a two inch truck.
What if a graphene coated bullet hit graphene armor!?!?
+CrazyJoe2003 same thing no Puncture but still the force just a tiny bit less

Here's my problem with sub-dermal armour: How is the skin even still alive? How is it getting blood? In that movie, when you show the knife snapping, why aren't his clothes getting cut along with the skin, only to be stopped by the armour?
To get blood into the skin (and to allow for sweating and such) there would have to be weak points in the armour. So, sure, he could have it across his chest, but that skin would surely be dying and he could be shot or stabbed elsewhere...
Wanderer Eris Good point there. Unless blood veins can slip through, that shit must be uncomfortable as hell.

When John Smith gets stabbed you'd think the his shirt would get ripped. NOPE.
He could also be wearing stab proof blazers and shirts which do exist and are on public markets.
Yeah, now that I think about it
but he still has skin over the under armor so the skin would still get cut and bleed
Not really. If you put clothes againts a hard unstabbable wall, it will only slightly rip open if you rub against it. If the knife cant even get trough the skin, it wont destroy the suit
If your going to dress fly as fuck you might as well get the strong shit
Theoretically, Titanium COULD work. But it would be a pretty complex web of tiny connected fiberous bit and need to be rigged to muscle and bone in such a way that it spread the impact across the body instead of isolated regions.
Well... No. Titanium is, while very light, is still too heavy, and also, while stronger than ordinary steel, its not really strong enough
GlaciusTS To be honest, I thought John Smith had liquid silicon armor. It's a liquid armor with slightly charged silicon dissolved in it. Upon any kinetic impact would result in the charged silicon to displace a little and attract each other to the point of the impact creating a bullet proof wall. Being implemented in light clothes like business suits.

Mat: It’s not like your getting mugged every time you go down to the corner store to get a gallon of milk.
South Londoners: arguable
Graphene is ridiculously conductive... which makes it perfect for being a subdermal skin layer in a thunderstorm. Sure, electricity will be drawn to you, but the electricity will just conduct THROUGH the graphene instead of your body (as long as there's enough to draw a significant amount of the current)
Sort of like how you're told to hide in a car during a thunderstorm. The car might attract lightning - but it just travels through the metal around the car to the ground.
Likewise, if you truly had graphene beneath your skin (all of your skin) the lightning would hit your head, travel through the graphene around you, and then come out your toes into the ground, with you unharmed.
Is that also just a theory or could it really be proven? (if anyone would actually have graphene put under their skin)
Not proven, persay, but the principles are scientifically proven. In reality you'd need to test and make sure the graphene was think enough to carry the massive current of a lightning bolt enough that your body would go unharmed. If it was too thin, you'd still be toast.
Would it be possible to have it thick enough to carry the current or would it be too thick to even have under skin?
That actually wouldn't happen. Sure it's highly conductive, but it's hot.
*VERY **_VERY_** HOT.*
You would die, not from the shock, but from the temperature of the air surrounding the bolt.
By the way, lighning is 30,000 Kelvin.
The Sun? 6,000 Kelvin.

The problem with graphene is that it is really amazing until you have a large amount of graphene. When you have a “large” sheet of graphene it starts to lose its amazing properties like being a superconductor and being really bullet resistant.

Plus, humans regenerate skin, so eventually, all of the skin would fall off, causing the armor to be shown, then eventually pop.
+Dudebro Gaming That would only happen if the armor was under just the dead skin cells that are currently on the surface. I assume this armor would be behind the living, regenerating layer, which means that new skin should still grow on the outside of the armor. He would need openings for blood flow and such to get to the living cells on the outside of the armor for that to work, though, or it would just die off..

Yeah but then you probably couldn't put it on your face and then if you were captured they would rip it off under your skin its pretty hard to pull out
Sorry meant that under your skin it's hard to take off DURP
Angelic Zombies but what if like he said its very electric conducted and you went into a thunderstorm? I would personally take a skintight suit than one inside your skin
Even if it was bullet proof, he would still be seriously injured. The material would need to spread the force of the bullet impact over a very large area in order for him to not have internal bleeding/bones breaking. If you get shot in the chest by a shotgun using buckshot and you are wearing some serious Kevlar, you are still going to have some insane bruises. If he were to get shot in the head, the force could probably indent his skull and kill him. Just because the material is bullet proof doesn't mean that you are not taking the full force of the bullet.
+Daniel Havlat The tests on graphene that the video mentions says that graphene spreads out the force of bullets to stop them. So as far as your "the material would need to spread the force of the bullet impact..." line goes, it does do exactly that.
+LegendofSleek Yes, but on what scale? If the spread is minimal it can mess you up pretty good, especially with higher caliber or heavier bullets. Nearly everything spreads the impact of a bullet, while some do it vastly better than others.
+Daniel Havlat it does i think it spreads the energy over the whole outer layer of his body
not exactly, shotgun "shot" is a bad example, the energy IS significant, but spread over a large area. Bullets condense the "energy dump" into a smaller area.
and serious armor, such as bomb disposal types, would straight laugh at buckshot. Like trying to kill someone by angrily throwing skittles at them. Slugs on the other hand, would at least knock them on their ass. Armor being heavy as fuck, and the energy transfer would unbalance them, if not breaking through
actually I'm not so sure if this would make him vulnerable to ellectricity, cuz if he's completely enclosed in the stuff it could act as a faraday cage/ellectricity mostly goes the path of least resistance, so it probably wouldn't really change anything, maybe even make him more resistent
“yes! I finally got my subdermal graffane armor! At last I’m- “
*Title card plays*
Hell yea I'd wear the diamond armor under my skin. To solve the conductivity issue, I'd wear a suit of rubber. Voila, next superhero. You're welcome, DC, or Marvel.
no offense but that superhero sounds horrible so its For DC marvel would not want him ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
a good antagonist for the punisher
Actually Spider-Man is using rubber armor that doesn't conduct electricity which is why he could resist electro's electricity, however, it is not diamond armor doe.
+Scar Nah just say Kuwabara Kuwabara
+BlackKanye I dunno. The last person that did that still got struck by lightning, which ignited his belt of bullets and set them off, and then he came back as a fire zombie
If Graphene is super flexible the bullet may not pierce the skin but it will still leave very severe contusions (bruises) and the high probability of internal organ rupture. If you have seen a person who has been shot while wearing kevlar they are not 100% unharmed.
The impact is the one damaging you. If you shoot a person wearing kevlar you are bruising him because it dosent take 100% of the impact. With graphite however....
Adrian Ftw With graphite he is wearing pencil lead lol. Graphene is the wonder material.
Nathan Hayes he way scientists get graphene is I kid you not to stick sellotape to graphite and pull it off
So, the way I see it, hydrostatic shock would still cause some form of internal damage given that the video states, "Graphene will bend, but won't break". Hence the graphene would carry the energy into the body (granted, at a much, MUCH smaller amount) but I would imagine the water in your cells would still carry the energy over and, with enough bullets or with big enough bullets (say, going from .45 ACP rounds in Agent 47's Silverballers to a .308 round rifle round)m I'd imagine internal organ rupturing would still be possible.
Plus, the graphene bends. Meaning it would still be pushed into your body from the bullet impact which I'd imagine would be horrifically painful.
Anyone smart know if that's correct or if I'm just talking out of my ass? :P
Graphene armour would be handy, if often find injuries that I don't remember getting, this would save me some money on treating random injuries, since I get injured with subdermal graphene, then it would mean something insane happened.
So, he's basically Greed from Fullmetal Alchemist?
+Supreme Genius All he wanted was a friend.... ;(

Hehe....your kinda right.
+TheAwesoMERGuy and everything else the world had to offer...
Sadly, as he is wearing it under his skin the bullet would still hit the skin, ripping through it until it reached the graphene armor. It would be immensely better and more protective to wear it like a morph suit, you (assumably) wouldn't need eye holes as it is so thin and I'm guessing it is breathable because of its thickness. Because of the way it stops bullets you would probably still get bruised but you would (almost definitely but not certainly) not die. This isn't a recent video so idk who will see this but I am hoping someone does.
Jemma Payne 1 it would look horibal
2 it could be stolen
3 it would not have any kind of insulator
4 it would be obveous
5 it would show any weak points
@Jake Render, it's too thin to see, so if I put it on you would see right through it. Someone stealing it is a small matter that isn't a big issue as long as you can find a way to protect it when it's not being worn. You could wear a suit underneath the graphene for insulation, or even some rubber underneath it to protect from any electrical shocks from its super-conductive properties.
King Focys And Sionnach yes that is tru but it still has no tinsial stringth so anything with a big enuf bulit will kill you simply by blunt force trama

I would become a superhero using no weapons only fists and feet
I would be a super criminal or some shit
I need that for when I go to school. Too many school shootings
+Johiah plays games I went to private school. Didn't have that problem.
Home school for the win. (See? I don't need friends!)
you're actually well over 30 times more likely to die in an alcohol related car accident where you weren't even drinking.... just saying
come to Australia then. don't go to school in the US lol
+Johiah plays games That's dark man....
You're really not accurate was the conductivity of graphene, it's a superconductor for sure, but just in extremely cold condition an extremely specific variant
Ah yes, the movies....something I vaguely remember from before the Plague times
They should coat space ships with graphene.
TheVeryShyguy nah, when matpat was talking about conductivity in the article it said graphene was hear conductive, now I'm no rocket scientist put if I'm right doesn't that mean on re-entering the atmosphere the heat would be more dangerous due to it lingering, meaning that the whole ship would explode? Also electronic conductivity could interfere with the ships electricity
TheVeryShyguy people would still die because if the space ship goes from 10000mph to 0 in a couple of seconds your face is going to smash into the internal walls at about 3000mph that will kill
2 biggest problems with graphene
It's hard to make large quantities
It is also hard to control
Yhea, just pay for it.
shadowplayer8 well the counductivity would help because it would divert the electricity and not let it get inside the rocket
Where do i sign up for some of that subdermal body armour?
well... there is a place where you can get bullet proof clothes
do they also sell bullet proof skin?
Just go to the local navy pharmacy and ask for some graphine implants. Tell them matpat sent you. They'll understand.
armor*
Alex Dies *armour, it’s English...
I dont think just having something over your body that wont break, well... will actualy protect you. It may spread out the impact, sure,, so, say, a shotgun or any bullet thats not FMJ may be impeded (though it may not pose a great risk in the first place, those have good stopping power but are not as likely to be immediatly fatal), beyond that, if the layer doesnt have a lot of mass, itll just push it through your body. Now, that may impede it a little bit buuuut ultimately all itll mean is that itll rip the sheet around into a ball, possibly ripping the skin over it off in the process, thats a bit of energy expended to minimaly decrease the velocity of the bullet, sure, it wont save his life.
Also a knights armor wouldnt be all that bad in a thunderstorm. Or, anything really covering any part of your body (yes, your skin would be fried after that... then again how subdermal is subdermal anyways, i dont know) that is more conductive than your body would be great at least compared to being hit by lightning without it. You know, becouse of how electricity works for the same reason that a hairdryer wont fry you if it falls into your bathwater, itll find the way to ground with the least resistance which wont be your body unless you are literally sitting on the drain in which case your privates may experience some shock, not immense, either, in fact most deaths from electricity arent from the 230 V thats on mains (or less if you're american), it tends to be industrial power or TVs. Well, at least TVs used to be commmon becouse they used cathode ray tubes at thousands if not tens of thousands of volts they stepped mains power up to in i believe the english term would be high voltage ladder.
If i ignore all other simplification, and unimportant missinformation, i simply must mention that because its concutive it is also best armour against thunders and flash, because it will form faraday cage, so high conductivity is actualy advantege, not a problem.
Wait... If the Graphene layer (or a similar substance) is below his skin, then why doesn't Agent 47 just go for John Smith's eyes, since those probably wouldn't be covered with the bulletproof subdermal substance. Or if the Graphene layer is under the surface of his eyes, how would that effect his vision? And would it be possible to implant that Graphene layer into his eyes without damaging his vision?
Maybe in his eyelids?
It’s apparently see through at a thin layer, so if it was thin enough but could still stop a bullet, then it should be fine.
@@sayhelloethan lol
Seeing as most people get eye tattoos (yes, those exist unfortunately) without eventually going blind, I doubt it would be successful.
I've watched this video so many times and now this video saved me with understanding Graphene in a simple way for a physics assessment task. Thank you so much for making real world science and math fun matpat
I don't think the material used is Graphene, it does not have a 3D structure as far as I know.
I'd recommend that you double check that info, I guess. But, it it's really accurate and I'm wrong, then...okay?
Also remember your organic chemistry
Well what if you fall trip or where did you get it by hook or something like what you spawn something sharper maybe a pin you would need it
Gotta love the music that lanceypooh uses
well actually, it would protect him from lightning. It would be a faraday cage. conducting electricity around his body. prevent it from passing through his heart.
Pretty sure he can still get fried.
YES SOMEONE ELSE IS ACTUALLY SMART
Yesssss somebody understands this. #TazerInvincable
Yes I thought the same thing, he might have some wicked skin burns from it being subdermal but he would probably live
As much as I remember you can still get electrocuted when you are touching the Faraday cage, the guy literally touches the cage from every way possible :P
Could you do the Pixar theory?
+billy bob There's already a guy for that
hes doing an inside out theory.
+billy bob Not a Pixar theory, THE Pixar Theory!
+billy bob Then he would be ripping someone off. Oh, I forgot, he's already an expert at that.
he said the pixar theory
What a throwback (2020)
It is probably something like "titanium plated graphene lattice. And it makes sense - titanium has 3% of copper conductivity making it virtually non-conductive material. So, they coated a strong conductive material with strong non-conductive material. Titanium is non-toxic and could be made even more chemically inert. Win-win!
Actually... wearing such an armor in a thunder storm would be usefull. Covering your whole body it would create a faraday cage, protecting your inner organs from the shock. Sur4e your skin would be burned to a crisp, but that would be less fatal, than your nervous system being fried.
Yes, I was looking for that comment.
It's nice to see science-y people are here
but isnt your skin touching your muscles? if you had the carbon stuff that was touching your skin AND your muscles, and you were struck by lightning, your muscles would be fried with your skin and because your body is 70% water and the electricity would jump from one vital organ to the other in seconds and i sound like matpat.
yeah just because its bulletproof doesn't mean it stops electrify flowing through your body. if anything it helps the electricity flow through your body
Trash Nasty No, no it doesn't help electricity flow through your body. It's far easier for electricity to flow through metal than through your body, so that's what it does. A suit of metal (or any conducting material) saves your body by offering electricity an easier path with less resistance. The lightning will go AROUND your body.
The suit will get really hot from the passing electricity, though, and will burn you. Possibly, fatally so. That's still a better chance of survival than you get from electrocution.
I'd love to have that kind of armor .
But what would happen if you need to have an operation?
same here
same like, get punched, break the guy's hand. conclusion=awesome!
Yah, and I struggle with my brother punching me so, this would be like the holy grale of ideas
+Ya WOT M8 Rubber Suit? Rubber Socks?
Kevlar is only fine woven threads, made to catch bullets, its made into sheets and layered together, Kevlar is only good at stopping 9mm you need a plate system under Kevlar to stop higher rounds.
That's pretty cool if you've got that kind of body armor!!! Imagine the things that you can do!!
Sounds kinda hard to get under your skin
yep and little scary
+Blizzic AYYYY I see what you did there
+Blizzic skin graphs are easy enough to do... though if one had the money to shell at it, i'd ponder would it do any good to have it grafted to bone t make your skeleton more durable... just my thought
+Blizzic ayy lmao
+Blizzic I think it would seem like a tattoo.
It might stop the bullet going through, but the impact energy would still go through, just like it does with Kevlar vests. Unlike in the movies, even if the bullet gets stopped by the armor, you are still likely to end up hurt. So John Smith might not get perforated, but he'd likely have organ damage and broken ribs. Good luck fixing that if the surgeons can't cut through the graphine armor.
Graphene is fantastic at distributing energy out across its surface, as I discuss in the latest video on my channel. For that reason it probably wouldn't hurt as much as you might think.
The kinetic energy in bullets isn't actually that much. It's only because the bullet's small that it goes in. A bullet has about the same energy as a dude jogging at you.
That's true for small arm's fire but not so much for heavier arms fire. it's one of the reasons you need a higher grade vest to stop it like a dragon skin body armor vest with the ballistic steel or ceramic plates.
Thane36425 Could you use a non Newtonian fluid to oppose blunt force? If you increase force of bullet, the viscosity (ability to resist change) increases.
Also the bullets would still puncture the skin, so he'd be bleeding all over anyway. Luke Cage doesn't bleed because his skin is bulletproof, but if the bulletproof layer is under the skin, the skin is going to be damaged by the bullets.
Man this video is 5 years old? Good god
Did some research... one gram of graphene costs about $100 to make. If one layer that covers an entire foot ball field weighs (to keep it simple because I know you said less than) one gram, since the average skin area is about 22 square feet and a football field is about 57,600 square feet, you could wear over 2,618 layers under every inch of your skin for the price of 100 dollars. All the other costs for the implanting for would pricey to say the least but, that sounds like a bargain to be able to stop a tank round. Of course that would still liquify your organs and bones but hey, it wont go through.
Edit: you could wear it over you skin, like woven into clothing which would make the cost at most $300 and you wont have to undergo surgery.
Lazy writers didn't even bother to research graphene, they probably thought titanium sounded cooler.
Ferman Sensei i gotta be honest it does sound cooler
I know, right? It's *Titanium under armour!* Orrrr Graphene under armour! (Wait, that stuff that's in pencils?)
Pick your material :P
+Andrew Elie Actually graphene is one atomic layer of graphite, so yes they are technically the same thing. Do your research first "dumbass"
***** Graphite actually is graphene, that's what it's called when there are lots of layers of it
+dominic madrigal
Only if you don't really know what titanium actually is.
If you do, well... Imagine someone saying: "He's wearing *aluminum* armor!" in a very dramatic voice. It's sorta like that.
Titanium is useful for a lot of stuff, just not ballistic body armor. Or swords, for that matter. (Looking at you, Blade.)
