  • In Part Two of this series, Pat Cummins and Australia take a trip to familiar territory to face down an old cricket enemy to defend their grip on the Ashes. It was billed as one of the most anticipated ashes series in a long time, but there was nothing that would get us ready, for the drama, controversy and all the action, that would be witnessed by these two cricket titans facing off. Easily the best test series of the year.
    Part one (2023: Australia's Baptism of Fire): • 2023: An Ashes series ...

      Yes it was. But that shouldn't be an excuse for a team like Australia for losing the series(let's be honest they would've lost the drawn match if rain hadn't interrupted) after being 2-0 up.

      @@Sunny-sc5vq agreed but have a bowler like Lyon taken out of such a sorted attack has its downside remember the Aussie test side that ur talking about especially away relies a lot on Lyon their pace attack gets neutralized in away conditions like on spin wkts in bgt but Lyon is their trump card that works both home and away I think one point was Steve smith's and Marnus form their dismissals always put aussies in trouble not to mention the wkts weren't quintessential English wkts bcz if they were bazball would've drowned on its own turf

    Absolutely loving this little docu-series mate. Its so interesting to look back on this ashes series and realise it really was one of the greats. Every test match bar the 3rd test at Headingley could have gone either way with a little bit of luck or a missed chance taken by either side. I especially remember watching the 5th test match and being equally frustrated and enthralled by the ebbs and flows of the game. Forgetting the controversial ball change, Australia should have been in a far better position in that 4th innings chase if they had taken their chances in England's 1st innings, and really, having Head and Smith at the crease batting well, and only needing 120 runs with 6 wickets in hand, you'd expect Australia to get over the line. But wasn't to be...

    On paper 2023 looks like one of Australia’s most successful. The reality is that in every aspect of the game they now seem ordinary, if lucky, compared to other teams. They continue to win titles and continue to be liked by no one as much as they like themselves. They have added grizzling about criticism and the vagaries of the game to their identity. In almost all respects the world is now looking elsewhere for examples of how to play. 2023 will not be remembered for their success, but for the achievements and innovation of India and England both on the field and in growing the sport. The greatest team of the last twenty-five years was the Australian side that lost the Ashes in 2005, remembered for how they played the game. It really does matter more than just winning.

    • @adam872
      @adam872 8 месяцев назад +1

      That’s a mystifying analysis. Australia had one of the toughest programmes in history and won two titles in the end comfortably, as well as retaining their most prized trophy. It’s far from luck, especially when they adjusted their approach after a couple of losses. I think you’ll also find the whole world cheered when we beat India on their home deck in the final.

  • @bradmenpes809
    @bradmenpes809 8 месяцев назад

    Nathan Lyon getting injured meant that Australia didn't win the Ashes in England - imho, most probably 4-1.
    *As for this being a great Ashes series, I think both teams were so poor in their judgment and tactics that stumbling to a drawn series was the most fitting conclusion.*
    In the First Test at Edgbaston, inexplicable batting choices by the English players, a nonsensical declaration by Stokes, and the worst fields ever set in Test cricket by an Australian team, somehow ended up with an Australian win.
    Horrible behaviour by English fans over a brain-fade by Bairstow in the Lords Test marred every moment of the series afterwards. An Australian win, but it felt, sitting at home watching the spiteful behaviour and listening to the vitriolic words, that all fans of Test cricket had lost.
    The Third Test at Headingley demonstrated that without Lyon, Australia were in real trouble. The only redeeming feature of the entire series was Mitch Marsh's sublime 118 (118) but Australia still lost.
    Day 2 of the Fourth Test at Old Trafford saw the worst bowling and fielding display ever by an Australian team in test cricket history, allowing Zak Crawley, of all players, to make 189 (182). In the second session of this day, 98% of all balls bowled by Australia were pitched short. Such poor cricket by Australia was not duly punished by a mainly vapid and headless display by England. Both teams could've been beaten by any strong first class side from any country, although in this Ashes series, the game was drawn.
    The Fifth Test was an underwhelming affair where no batsman made a century and player of the match Woakes took only 7 wickets (Starc took 8). But England won the Test at The Oval, a ground that traditionally favours Australian teams because of the bounce. But not this Australian team. Cummins won the toss and decided to bowl, giving away that advantage immediately.
    There were so many horrible moments over the six weeks of this Ashes series, but the one I simply could not believe was when Ricky Ponting was pelted by debris while trying to give an end of day summary of play. Let's hope we never see another Ashes series like it.
    If England try to play Bazball in Australia, they will be annihilated.
    The 2005 Ashes series remains the pinnacle of Ashes contests (even though McGrath got injured).

    Your commnetary on how the series unfolded was excellent. But i thoight it was worth putting more of an emphasis on how the Bazall strategy went pear shaped for England in that firsr Test. They should have batted on and made 500. The way Root was batting, they would have gone close to that score.
    That would have demoralised the Aussie side for that test and probably the series. Instead, the immaturity of that early declaration gave Australia a sniff, and we took it.
    It is all well and good being aggressive, but you have to be smart at the same time. That declaration was really dumb.

    For me, one of the biggest differences after the first two tests was the loss of Nathan Lyon. He is the king of breaking a partnership. As soon as Australia lost him, I was convinced it was all over.
