Hey guys, just a quick note for those of you who watched my channel announcement while it was up: I’m still planning to do what I said, however the transition is taking longer (and will be more gradual) than I expected. Also, to be honest, I’ve been itching to get a new video out to you!! So, I hope you enjoy this one and thanks for watching. More videos to come!
Who's here after Aus has won the World Cup again? Everything said in this video turned out to be true. Aus lost the first 2 matches, then won all matches, and became champions
And also beating those teams in the knockouts who thrashed the Aussies in the league stage. I am an Indian but Australia is the best ❤️❤️ although feeling devestated after India's loss but kudos to Pat and his boys 🥰🥰
It's eerie that i watched this video yesterday - hours before the World Cup final. Considering the parallels between '99 and this year it just goes to show you that when it matters most, Australia just have it in their DNA - when you wear Gold you play winning cricket and that's exactly what happened in Ahmedabad. Probably the greatest showcase of captaincy, bowling and fielding in a high stakes game - you don't have to be the best team everyday, just the best team on the days that matter most
So true. India played some unbelievable cricket this last tournament too. It's true they didn't win the final, but they should hold their heads up high. They dominated every match leading up to that last one. But of course Australia just know how to dig deep in the most unfavourable conditions, which make them the most dangerous team to play.
We dont have what it takes to be winners..If we couldn’t win with this team..which was arguably the best indian team ever..we will never win..There is something wrong with how we are training our players..Honestly,i m just impressed by aussies fighting spirit and determination..They are truly champions and they prove it time nd again..
@@artislife456India lost just because of KL Rahul KL always play slow in the pressure match. He is the reason why we lost 2021 & 2022 t20 WCs Our selectors are making him odi captain🙄
In WC 2023, Australia lost 1st match to India, beat them in the finals. Lost 2nd match to South Africa, beat them in the semis. Classic Australia. Players changed, but stories are the same. Love you Team Australia
I remember watching this video when you posted it after Australia's losses to India and South Africa in the 2023 World Cup. And yesterday, they won the final against a team that hadn't lost a single match. Talk about foreshadowing
Totally. Remember that period well. A team full of some of the greatest players Australia produced in their history. Most opposing sides probably just looked at who was wearing the baggy green and were already beaten before they stepped onto the field. Not a single weak link amongst their starting elevens in that period. If I had to pick the best XI, personally it was the Ashes team in 2001: Hayden, Langer, Ponting, M.Waugh, Martyn, S. Waugh, Gilchrist, Warne, Lee, Gillespie, McGrath.
To think that chasing 170-odd in under 20 overs of an ODI shows how much tonk the '99 team really had. That's a fair score to chase in any T20 match these days.
The reason Australia are dominant in world Cricket today, is because they give it their all for their country, they have a sense of team spirit. I remember when Merv Hughes (my apologies if i butchered the spelling) was balling and it was a tight situation, he managed to injure himself after a particular delivery, and when his team mates ran towards him to check if he was ok, his first question was - Did we get him? !!!!.....that was and still is the dedication to the cause by the Australian team.....whereas we Indians, think its all about records and numbers and statistics.....which in my humble opinion should be a reflection of your effort not the other way around......
How have I never seen this channel? This is superb, mate. I am here just after the 2023 WC final, and the situations were so very similar. Terrible preparation and a team no one expected to do anything. They lose their first two, and Cummins was under threat by a media landscape still torn by Langer's sacking. They simply had to be perfect. And they were. Their fielding exemplified this, with its crescendo when Head was laid out across deep cover after taking a spectacular catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma. It will always be my fondest moment of the campaign, just like Mark Waugh's catch in the 99 final.
As they say bully were once bullied. Respect for Australia. This match was my first match of my life. I was 8 years old and i always wanted to ball like warne. I still remember the glimpses when i watched that day.
Pressure builds character, character builds confidence and finally confidence takes you to the top of the world not once not twice but three times in a row what a team that was
I remember watching the semi-final Aus vs SAF live on satellite TV, that late night was worth it. Fond memories. Absolute scenes at the end and my favourite ODI of all time.
Sensational. I was in London for this and what a campaign. "Anyone who writes us off now is a bad judge". Stevie baby you fcking champion. Edit - Thankyou so much 6ixandout for putting this together!!!
Great podcast. One thing I would mention was the Shane Warne Saga. The man who for much of 90's had been Australia's own X-Factor. But, by the end of the decade, the wear and tear was getting to him. In particular that tour to The West Indies, and the manner in which Brian Lara targeted him. Leading to Steve Waugh dropping him for the final test. Something the spinner felt bitter about even two decades later. Which is what made him so dangerous in the closing stages. Warne was a genius, and a proven 'big match' player. This we all knew. But now, he felt he had a point to prove. Cue his (in my opinion) greatest ODI spell ever, and a performance that counteracted, and ultimately superseded South Africa's own megastar.
Throughout his career Warne would have these periods where the wear and tear got to him. But he got breaks that helped him. That 2003 scandal with the diet pills actually helped him because he got away from cricket, likewise being dropped in 1999 probably helped get his mind away from cricket.
@Remen-tj3ph Waugh was regarded as a legend during his career, but for some reason the cricketing world seems to remember the Ponting era team more vividly. Ponting winning two World Cups without losing a game and doing so in 2003 against India in the final I think is part of the reason. Ask most people other than perhaps the English who the great Australian players were over the last 30 years and they will say Ponting, Gilchrist, Warne, McGrath and for some reason Indians rate Brett Lee very highly, even though Gillespie had much more test success against them.
And the domination continues to this day….decades later still champions wow, Australian cricket team built different 🥵 👏🏼 💯 🔝 You have to appreciate the resilience and that mindset 🫡
In that 1999 World Cup, I remember India-Australia match in the super-six, it was a make or break match for both the teams. I was super eager to see the Tendulkar-McGrath contest. McGrath's first over to Tendulkar left me spell-bound. McGrath removed Tendulkar in his first over, Rahul Dravid in his next over and the Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin in his 3rd over. He literally ripped the heart of Indian batting line up and pretty much sealed the match. I also remember, prior to this World Cup match, Sachin Tendulkar tore apart the Aussie attack in all the previous 5 or 6 ODI matches they played against each other which also included his Sharjah desert storm (Tendulkar's scores in the previous 6 ODI matches against Aus were 100 off 89 balls, 15 off 24 balls, 80 off 72 balls, 143 off 131 balls, 134 off 131 balls, 143 off 128 balls). There was one huge caveat though - Glenn McGrath & also Jason Gillespie who was Australia's then second leading fast bowler after McGrath, both were absent in all those matches.
We are in 2023 and Australia is still the strongest. Australia was at 10 in the beginning. They were 97 for 5 at one moment and boom in adverse conditions they showed their character again.
That Australian team of the late 90s-early to mid 00s was just disgustingly good. When your worst batsman in the test team is Damian Martyn (a guy who averaged 47 IIRC) you are ridiculous! Plus they usually only selected 4 out and out bowlers. Of course this ODI team was just as dominant evidenced by winning 3 WC in a row.
True, the 1990s team was the first one to beat West Indies in a test series in more than 15 years and McGrath was only playing like the 2nd series of his career.
Absolutely agreed with you. This is the result of lack of investment in white ball cricket after the 2015 CWC. Sacking JL was not a good decision either, they've wanted a nicest coach and a captain and they've got both in McDonald and Cummins.
Gutsy is something the present squad is not. That has been Australia's most defining quality. I like Cummins he is really hard working but he isn't ruthless like former Australian captains. But I hope he grows into the role more.
@@stevez2309 Yeah, Cummins is a very defensive captain. He is just there for the media, he is the captain cause he addresses the media well. Best prodcast on Australia's rise to the top after 1999. I wanted them to win 99 WC at that time and boy those two scud missiles by Klusener off Fleming almost give me a heart attack. Besides AUS 99 WC success, Klusener deserved the player of the tournament.

I don't think so but OK. His finishing and fielding were amazing in white ball cricket. Legend in my eyes. Maybe because he didn't make the test team that often? I don't know, did he play that much red ball?

1999: you had the greatest Test match in my lifetime (WI v Australia, 3rd Test, Barbados) and then the best ODI I've seen in the form of the WC SF detailed here. What a time to be alive.
I dont usually watch long videos but this holded me all the time i didnt even skip a part it was that interesting One of the most best cricket videos ever seen❤
What a wonderful trip down memory lane. Thanks for the wonderful compilation of cricketing history! Insane to think that Australia just won their 6th WC under somewhat similar circumstances.
Man, you are awesome. As a cricket fan from Bangladesh, I always had an affection for the Aussies. I knew some of their histories. But not like this. Thanks a lot.
Knocking out NZ wasn't about knocking out a rival. Points from group only carried forward vs other teams in super 6 stage. So if WI qualified over NZ, they'd go into super 6 with 1 win 1 loss, if NZ qualified 0 wins 2 losses.
To be honest, I think it's about both - your comment is the other side of the same coin. Those things only would have occurred had Australia and the Windies created a way to knock out NZ. If you read the match reports from NZ's next game vs Scotland, much of it is coloured by what happened in this AUS v WI match - even to the extent where NZ supporters were said to have been booing mentions of Australia in the post match formalities! More recently, both Brian Lara and Steve Waugh have alluded that they might've been trying to create an advantageous result for themselves (but not in collusion). While I don't doubt that Steve Waugh would have treated any other team in that position, the same way (that's the ruthless mindset I was talking about), NZ is always a rival to Australia, even if it's more friendly than others. Events like these are always viewed by both countries with the knowledge of what has happened before between the two, like the underarm incident for example. It's makes everything more spicy! Thanks for adding more to the story, and giving me the chance to give some further insight. Cheers for watching! :)
I was just 6 years old in 1999 and I was introduced to cricket by my mum just 1 or 2 years before I believe. 99 WC was my first WC and continued to watch WC even after IND got out of it. I still remember we both watched that semi final and we were too upset to the fate of SA. That felt like salt on injury. Still even today, I feel for them. It would be better if they got out early or they couldn't get close to that margin. And we felt the final became too easy for AUS. And we both stopped cricket after 2015 WC as our idols and legends of the 90s in all of the teams were retired, IND lifted WC and it was a complete circle for me. Starting cricket watching AUS winning and ending watching AUS winning. The another important reason that made us to stop was the t20. It took over the game, test cricket became less valued. The t20 killed the game.
Brother, your clear no-nonsense style with a good dose of understated passion is what makes your posts so easy and compelling to watch, you provide the words and let the cricket do the talking. How I would love to sit by your side at the "G' soak in the sun share a pie and a beer and wrap all things cricket. You are a purist, my friend.
Thank you for putting this together. This is a great video, lovingly put together by someone who recognises the effect it had on viewers. I tip my cap to you, sir.
Excellent video. I was in high school back in ‘99 and remember it well. Funny that pretty much the same thing just happened at the 2023 World Cup. Even better, Aussies started out with losses to India and South Africa, won every game since and beat those two nations to the trophy 🏆 Not expecting Australia to dominate the next decade in ODI’s like we did back then but still an amazing achievement after being written off by most experts after 2 losses.
Coming back to this video now 4 weeks later and history has repeated itself. 0-2 at the start, winning the last 7 games on the bounce to make the semis (including that insane double hundred from Maxwell) and the Aussies are facing South Africa in a semi final...again.
One of the best cricket stories i have heard , though i hardly watch any , still the analysis of Ausssie's comeback with ever more determintion haunted other teams and other fans for next decade and a half
Fantastic video! You've brought back great memories. I was living in England at the time, and was present at Lords for the Australia vs Zimbabwe game. I remember my English mates giving me heaps of stick after the two early losses. The English press were even worse. Then the increasing English hysteria and paranoia when the Aussies went on their winning streak. I was in a pub in Warwickshire for the Australia vs SA tie and the whole place fell apart when Donald was run out. By the time the Aussies beat Pakistan, Australia had won the Davis Cup, the rugby World Cup, and the ODI World Cup. My mates, and England, were gutted - rotflmao!! Great days, from one of the best years of my life.
Thx - thoroughly enjoyed this summary. I was living in London up until May 99 & I saw all the build up but then went travelling to Canadá & missed everything until I saw a tiny art yin Canadian newspaper saying Australia won WC. I missed all the drama. So thanks for this. Looking at the weather during the series brought me back to being in England. Thx again
Was 21 back then. Brings back such amazing memories and nostalgia of that time. It was the most competitive era in world cricket. So many all-time greats playing in the same era.
What a beautiful start to my day!!! Accidentally stumbled upon this video in the feed and re-lived my childhood memories. Honestly, I so so bitterly miss this quality of cricket. The players, the grit, their rivalry, their intensity. Thanks to the creator of this video.
Great video once again and very relevant to our form prior to this world cup and how we have started, we really do need perfection here on out to get anywhere in this world cup! Another interesting note is how different a par ODI score was back then compared to now, I feel as if we have lost a little bit of the battle between the bat and ball. Scores of over 350 regularly and bowlers trying to defend runs rather than bowl aggressively, probably to do with the flatter pitches. Great job mate, thoroughly enjoyed this! 👏👏
Notice how much more exciting it is despite the score only being 213 or less? The balance between bat and ball could make for amazing contests full of thrills. Amazing that we remember so many amazing games from the 90’s which in handset had low scores, but produced such a great result
That deadly Australian team was one of the most competitive ever. It was the greatest ever team in history of the game. Every player was there to win by any means. what a remarkable contribution to the game this country made. 🙌
Excellent video. Just relived the childhood moments of watching this world cup and important lesson that adversity reveals the real character. Thats what the Aussies did.
It still is in today's time, mostly in world cups. It's just not easy to chase 250+ in a high pressure world cup except if the pitch is flat. Afghanistan defeating England by 69 runs shows how crucial it can be to even just surpass 250+.
Commenting so that when your channel is exponentially big, I can flex the fact that I started watching when you had 20k subs. The sheer quality of your videos is so fantastic and they are so enjoyable, I just binge watched about 6 in a row. I'm really excited for what's to come, hope you have a great day :)))
Excellent narration. Those days we all wanted to be like Klusner, Jonty, Shoaib Akhter or Warne. Today's generation coudn't relate (they don't need to also), we had arguably the best time of cricket. Not to mention, the bowlers played in 99, like Ambrose, Walshe, Wasim, Saqline or Warne, watiching them was like dream. I don't see fearsome bowlers like them nowadays. Finally, thanks for the video. I was in class seven during 99 WC.
I was in prison at 19 in 99. Two huge muscle head guys pulled me aside and quietly but firmly told me to stfu at night and if I didn't people would find me twisted into a pretzel. I remember "Donald didn't run!" and having to stfu, ha. What a year in Aussie sport.

1999: you had the greatest Test match in my lifetime (WI v Australia, 3rd Test, Barbados) and then the best ODI I've seen in the form of the WC SF detailed here. What a time to be alive.
I dont usually watch long videos but this holded me all the time i didnt even skip a part it was that interesting
One of the most best cricket videos ever seen❤
What a wonderful trip down memory lane. Thanks for the wonderful compilation of cricketing history! Insane to think that Australia just won their 6th WC under somewhat similar circumstances.
10/10 storytelling. Great job mate
No better love story than Australia and World Cup. Proud Aussie fan from India.
Man, you are awesome. As a cricket fan from Bangladesh, I always had an affection for the Aussies. I knew some of their histories. But not like this. Thanks a lot.
AUSTRALIAN TEAM WAS VERY STRONG BETWEEN 1999 WC SF TO 2007 WC FINAL....🏏🏏🏏
And now Aussies are world champions again
Exactly right! I remember this happening and it made perfect logical sense to try to carry over the win into the super 6 stage.
It’s not both. It’s 100% this
It was definitely not both. Australia only cared about taking those points through to the super 6. They were crucial. Had nothing to do with NZ.
I only really got into cricket in 2001, awesome history of one of the greatest world cups that has been played mate! Keep up the awesome work.
A bit of Deja Vu. This year, they lost the first two games but still went on to win.
Only the first against India I think
Sorry I forgot SA
Watching this after the 2023 World Cup final! The aura….is definitely back!
U r a legend and Australia repeated history
This aged extraordinarily well
The timing of this video couldn’t be better considering our nightmare start to this tournament.
Another great video again mate.
You gave goosebumps man. That was lovely narrating all along.
History repeats!!!!
Superb summary of a truly great world cup! It brings back good (but stressful) memories of staying up late to watch those SAf games!
Coming back to this video now 4 weeks later and history has repeated itself. 0-2 at the start, winning the last 7 games on the bounce to make the semis (including that insane double hundred from Maxwell) and the Aussies are facing South Africa in a semi final...again.
Bro you just predicted the future!
This is the best podcast on cricket... I am saying this with responsibility. This is THE BEST !!!
One of the best cricket stories i have heard , though i hardly watch any , still the analysis of Ausssie's comeback with ever more determintion haunted other teams and other fans for next decade and a half
Still remember that semi between Aus n SA.. i literally cried when SA lost.. i was 13 back then.. klusener was my idol ..
One of my favourite world cup. Thanks for Creating video.
That you for the picturesque journey back in time. I loved calm and composed narration. Cheers!
Yep you were right, it was
Goosebumps storytelling. Been into it thoroughly.
What a beautiful start to my day!!! Accidentally stumbled upon this video in the feed and re-lived my childhood memories. Honestly, I so so bitterly miss this quality of cricket. The players, the grit, their rivalry, their intensity. Thanks to the creator of this video.
Even as an Indian have to admit that Sachin was McGrath's bunny.
Mate, you brought so many memories back. Thanks a lot for this.
The powerplay rules, 2 new balls, better bats and low quality bowlers
Notice how much more exciting it is despite the score only being 213 or less? The balance between bat and ball could make for amazing contests full of thrills. Amazing that we remember so many amazing games from the 90’s which in handset had low scores, but produced such a great result
The best ever podcast for one of my favorite world cup 99 ever.
That deadly Australian team was one of the most competitive ever. It was the greatest ever team in history of the game. Every player was there to win by any means. what a remarkable contribution to the game this country made. 🙌
I think westindies in my childhood all teams were afraid to play with them
@@Paidgirlkanakbut that was only for two matches until India changed the world cricket forever.
Cool vid mate. Over the tournament every player played a role in getting us the cup. Also a blend of legends and new era was great to watch
Cricket was very competitive in the 90's between alot of nations.
And I'm watching this again after the world cup final
Excellent video. Just relived the childhood moments of watching this world cup and important lesson that adversity reveals the real character. Thats what the Aussies did.
One of the best cricket video that I saw until now
here after the final. Man o man...... you were right as hell.
back in the day when 270 and 280 were formidable scores
It still is in today's time, mostly in world cups. It's just not easy to chase 250+ in a high pressure world cup except if the pitch is flat.
Afghanistan defeating England by 69 runs shows how crucial it can be to even just surpass 250+.
Commenting so that when your channel is exponentially big, I can flex the fact that I started watching when you had 20k subs. The sheer quality of your videos is so fantastic and they are so enjoyable, I just binge watched about 6 in a row. I'm really excited for what's to come, hope you have a great day :)))
Fanstastic Video, Glenn McGrath opening the bowling changed every thing.
Maaannnnnn..... This is one of the best podcasts on 99 world cup... Great job... Thank you
"the current team might not have that aura now..." ... well they are now the World Champions
Amazing team performance.Warne and Magrath were unstoppable
Perfect line to end the video❤❤
A big time admirer of your videos from Pakistan. Keep up the great work mate ❤
This by far is one of the best documentary of Australia’s campaign in 1999 word cup
They did the same thing in 2023 repeating 1999 beating India. Mighty Australia 🇦🇺 for a reason 🎉
Best channel for cricket content
I was in prison at 19 in 99. Two huge muscle head guys pulled me aside and quietly but firmly told me to stfu at night and if I didn't people would find me twisted into a pretzel. I remember "Donald didn't run!" and having to stfu, ha. What a year in Aussie sport.
You really are the best cricket storytelling channel on RUclips. Keep it up
1999 WC is always special…. Lots of memories.
You have a done a great job making this video. I actually started playing cricket after this WC. SA always feel bad for them.
28:17, no bro they still have the aura.. I'm watching this video after Australia won 2023 world cup..
