@@AmazingPhilippines1 Have seen a number your vids on accommodation Ron, they always informative. I'm in Cebu for a couple weeks in march then relocating sept/oct so the vids a great help & pointer.
I’ve been enjoying your videos and insights for about 6 months. Got to Cebu Saturday. Keep hoping I’d bump into you out some where. Thanks for sharing. There are so many more foreigners here since I’ve been back. Ayala yesterday foreigners outnumbered Filipinos 2 to 1. Blew my mind. Maybe I’ll run into you before we head back to Atlanta. Amping Mac
I have been pretty busy Mac and not out and about too much this week. This is the high season here with winter in much of the northern world. Have fun and stay safe.
Great video! When I lived in Mandaluyong in Manila last year I guess what I lived in was budget housing. I had a studio for 11,000PHP and there were bed spacers there but they rented the entire place to me as a studio. I suspect when I return to Cebu I can find something either just as cheap and maybe a little bigger. Depending on your lifestyle the biggest thing for me I learned is you need to ask what kind of privacy you want or need. The place I lived had 24 hr gate guards and the guards at the beginning were kind of nosy and then when new men took over the job it was better. It's just something to consider if you're not going to live in a Condo with uniformed security where they maintain a guest list.
Great video Rod! Most important part of your housing search is to spend a few nights in the area you want to stay in and see if it suits your quiet level. Karaoke bars, Dance bars, habol drivers drinking at the corner , music concerts motorbikes racing up and down can put a hurt on you lifestyle if it happens all night long till dawn. No kidding. Driving by at night isn't enough.
good morning rod..great video..i am looking now for a 3 bedroom condo.i that you for the previous info for finding my condo.i feel i need the comforts of home.to live in clean and decent accommodation...thankyou rod..
I have been quoted the "foreign" price several times Jane. It always comes down a bit when I explain that they are overpriced in comparison to most similar units but it is a game I prefer not to play.
Thanks Derek. I continue to be asked about the cheaper rentals and feet on the ground and networking with the locals is the best way to find it. Many rentals are not posted online.
The lower priced places often are not online as you probably know so networking with locals seems to work the best. Many advertise their places with banners or hand written signs on light poles and buildings Ken.
Always good information in your low cost housing videos as well as your other vids. It's often wise to sharpen shopping skills prior to considering any purchases! Thanks so much for your hard work and effort to produce these. I for sure appreciate it Rod! Just great viewing! Sincerely, BM
People do say touring a neighborhood on foot is a good way to find a place, but I've found the phone numbers go unanswered, or the place was already taken, or a host of other things like that.
I have also had problems getting calls and emails returned John, from people and companies. Part of the culture or??? The lower rent units tend to go quickly and are often not online.
I haven't had any trouble getting my deposit back from the 2 previous landlords. I occasionally here horror stories about landlords keeping all or most of the deposit and that is an issue I hope you don't have to deal with. Some renters will ask that their deposit be used for the last 1-2 months rent if you are renting on a longer lease and that may work for you O S.
I keep putting off setting up a bank account here Robert but I should do it after I extend my ACR card in a couple months. I do my taxes in the USA online so it is very easy.
@@AmazingPhilippines1 - I don't have a Philippines bank account because many banks don't want Americans because of the reporting requirements. Then there is the matter of interest, which would be foreign earnings which would complicate your taxes. Not reporting the ten pesos could land you in tax court. I'm not kidding.
@Corn Bread - Foreigners CAN have bank accounts. Some banks have zero interest accounts. Some banks will want you if you have a large minimum balance. You are required to have a bank account for the retirement program, unless you buy a condo, for example. I have had a bank account with BPI in the past, before the US imposed the extra reporting requirements. Let's not oversimplify. Some people still get drivers licenses also on balikbayan Visa or even tourist visa. Depends on who you talk to when you go to the bank/office. I had the DL from years ago and I'm keeping it.
ruclips.net/video/Z5dq3n_bOX4/видео.html I did this video at Deca homes many months ago but I should get back there to see the progress. Thanks for reminding me.
It depends on what your budget is Billy. Most of the cheaper places can be found by searching the area you are interested in staying in. Cheap places tend to go fast. The cheapest condo rents I have seen were at Edades Condos in Lahug. I have heard a small studio go for about 8,000 pesos/month, but most will be between 10-15,000, and you will probably need a Filipino to check it out for you as foreigners tend to be charged more in some cases.
You know I have to say something that I don't mean to offend but I have been here four years now and I learned the hard way. I wish someone would had mentioned this more. You have to really be mindful when you are looking for a place in the Philippines. I LIKE SO MANY hear of these places for $100 $200 a month and we get locked into that idea. But if there was something the statement "YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR" EVER applied to it is housing in the Philippines; at least Negros Oriental. The keyword to this video is BUDGET and for some people they very well may need that. But be aware that OFTEN means it comes with a ton of things you with your Western Mindset may not want to experience. (A million roosters, tons of dogs barking all night, burning of trash right under your window, videoke all effing night long, security issues and much more) These days I CAN spot in one glance if a place has those kinds of issues. If that does not bother you THEN RENT ON Mate! But if you require a bit more sane experience then don't quickly go for the budget if you can afford to is all I am saying because you literally GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. And again that has been my experience of four years living from Siquijor a year to Dumaguete to Valencia.
Very good points. There are a few nice exceptions that one might find but you should go into an area expecting exactly what you have described. I don't recommend people on a very tight budget to come here but if they do they should try to live below that budget because there will be unexpected expenses like medical, dental, girlfriends, family, etc.
I will be looking for a cheap place to rent by Car Car city south of Cebu . I have a friend that will help me . My friend said yes you can find a better deal not listed online . I grew up in the country hunting fishing and working on farms . I moved to the city to find better work . I lived in the cheaper part of the city , high crime , low rent . No one ever bothered me . I would even walk to the store in the middle of the night . Very few white people lived there .
Carcar is a growing city and very near Cebu City so you have that advantage. Your experience should also help you cope with the challenges here also Edward. Good luck with your plans.
I spent some time in Car Car . I didn't have any problem . It seems like I get a lot of advice from people that have not been there and have no idea what my plans are . Every place is different even here in US . But if you have spent time in CAR CAR I would be interested in what you have to say Corn Bread . But I will say I am better off to follow my own plans . Almost every time I have changed my plans because of someone elses advice it gets me in trouble . I am not trying to say anything bad about anyone . I am just saying this based on my past experience .
I am familiar with those sites and several others as well Miss Ansky. Thanks for watching and commenting. I have some subscribers who are looking for lower cost housing that often is not listed online.
Thanks for watching Peter. I often get requests about cheaper housing. The video is about how to find the cheapest housing. The cheaper places go fast and are usually not listed online so it requires searching on foot or asking the locals for info. It is also best to have a Filipino negotiate the rent amount and terms as a foreigner will often be charged more.
Great video Rod
Thanks Dieselman. This is another option for those wanting the cheaper rent.
Great vid and advice Ron, as per usual!
Thanks for watching Michael. I often get requests about "cheaper" housing.

Yes sir!
Great video, Rod. Both the info on budget housing and the walk.
Thanks Stan. There are many cheaper rental options if one does the legwork or networks with Filipinos properly.

I agree sea otter. I have sat in neighborhoods for this very reason at night and people will ask me if I am lost. LOL.

Hi Rod. You're right, better ask a Filipino friend do the negotiating when it comes to renting an apartment/condo.
I have been quoted the "foreign" price several times Jane. It always comes down a bit when I explain that they are overpriced in comparison to most similar units but it is a game I prefer not to play.

You should live in Forbes Makati.
This is in Mabolo, Cebu City. I could live in Makati but not very interested in that area actually. Too big and congested for me gearzone.
Very few foreigners like Metro Manila. It's kind of a God forsaken area. But to each his own.
