On December 16th I spent the day railfanning in the Capital Region of Upstate New York. It turns out that on this day the area played host to a pretty substantial snowstorm that dumped 14 inches of snow in some places. The trains must run, however, and run they did; not only did the snowy conditions make this a memorable day, but this was one of the best days I have had on CSX in terms of motive power in a very long time. Five trains had EMD leaders, classic power was plentiful, and foreign power from three different railroads all pulled trains through the blizzard. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some winter scenes and some cool trains!

Wait, this is titled operations in a blizzard. When I was a kid in Ogden Utah, I would get up early and shovel a good 6 to 8 inches, go to school , come home and shovel another 4 inches. This year my daughter in Ogden said they had a record snow fall, she has 3 feet total in her yard. I’ve driven professionally for 34 years and had to drive at a crawl with my head out the window looking for a reference point as to not drive into a ditch or rear end someone. That’s a blizzard!

Gotta do better than that, that’s not a blizzard , but I’ll reserve judgement to see if it gets worse
