In this video, we will take a look at Montana Rail Link operations over Bozeman Pass, as trains tackle the nearly 2% grade between Livingston and Bozeman. As is the case on Mullan Pass, heavy freight trains require the use of helper locomotives to make it over the mountain, making for some awesome sights and sounds among some beautiful scenery. This video is also our last along the Montana Rail Link System before it was officially reabsorbed by BNSF on January 1st of this year. Enjoy this final farewell to a pretty awesome railroad doing what it did best for almost 40 years.

My neighbor worked this section for 30yrs. There is a marker going up the Livingston side if the at train doesn’t reach a certain speed then the helper engines are called in. They’re only used to assist the train then return to Livingston . The family are three generations of railroaders.

Great video ! I hope down the line BNSF will preserve and donate MRL # 290 That is one of the few remaining SDP40 units left . Built for the Great Northern railroad back in the mid 1960s. Close to 60 years old and still doing what it does best !

That would be awesome if they did that- it’s a very interesting looking unit and was cool to see run

Good Luck with that!.... BNSF doesn't "donate" much of Anything.

I wonder what is going to happen to the SD35/40/P40's that the MRL had. Im sure BNSF will sell them off god forbid scrap them. I think there was a 45 or two still on their roster as well.

MRL doesn’t have any sd35s Anymore. The 355 (the last remaining sd45) and 290 (only sdp40) are set to be scrapped and the MRL sd40 2xrs are all still in service either in yard or local service. A lot of MRL power is in really bad condition including the 290/ 4310 which both died before the merger.

Who goes for breakfast when the sun is out and a train is on the move? Not me.
