    Hello, love your vlogs. I’m new with world scholar cup and will be attending the global rounds in Australia. Do you have any tips for first timers?

    • @AlexaLoste
      @AlexaLoste  6 лет назад

      Hi there! Thanks so much for watching :) Most of the tips I'd give are pretty commonplace--make collaborative documents for your team to share notes on (my team loved this app called Quip), organize mock debates with other teams and get as much practice as you can (the debate event has a maximum of 4000 points per scholar, compared to Writing & Challenge which have a 3000 point threshold), adopt a strategy when it comes to answering Challenge questions (some scholars have a limit to how many 3 or 4 or 5 bubbles they shade, some scholars only shade a single answer per question).
      One thing I'd especially advise you to take embrace is the extremely collaborative community of WSC, which is quite uncommon in other academic competitions. There are tons of resources and communities available online, which will help you become more academically competitive and simultaneously make friends with other scholars. For starters, check out OnePwaa :)
      Hope you have an amazing globals season! Best of luck.

    • @AlexaLoste
      @AlexaLoste  7 лет назад +1

      Not required (unless your school does) but smart formal attire is recommended! PICA uniform for Hanoi Globals was as follows.
      - Day 1 (Opening): Casual attire (We'll be in an auditorium for the Opening Ceremony, but the Scavenge may be outdoors. You may opt to pack lighter wear for the Scavenge to change into during lunch.)
      - Day 2 (Academics): Smart semi-formal attire: White button-down, slacks/pencil skirt, flats/school shoes, PICA jacket (or blazer). If you wanna wear something cultural to Scholar's Fair, pack that too!
      - Day 3 (Bowl): Smart casual attire + PICA jacket
      - Day 4 (Ball): There are 2 types of scholars at the Ball: Dress Your Best and Dress Your Comfiest. Personally, I'd go with the first if only for the experience of "ball" and also nice photos but it's really up to you!
      - Day 5 (Closing): Smart casual attire + PICA jacket

      Hiii guys so ummm... I don't think that we are actually allowed to disclose info about the tests and such (like for example the test questions) as that will be quite unfair... and also a minute form of cheating hahaha. That's why they always ask us to keep our gadgets away once the academic events start. But if you'd like a mental image of how the scholars challenge questions will be... it would help to have this image in mind: 1 big circle and 1 slightly smaller but still big circle. Have these two intersect each other a lil bit *note: just a lil bit*. The first big circle represents everything in the curriculum (whether or not you studied it) while the slightly smaller but still quite big circle represents everything that will come out in the challenge. (This diagram is also true in the case of the scholars bowl). Hope this help!!! (≧∇≦)

    • @minute4tech203
      @minute4tech203 7 лет назад

    • @emanfattani4421
      @emanfattani4421 7 лет назад +1

      I didn't read this comment properly and thought it only asked for what aspects were hard. Regardless, thank you much for the advice. Also, I also doubt you're allowed to disclose information so that's completely understandable about where you're coming from. So sorry it came out that way 😳

    • @AlexaLoste
      @AlexaLoste  7 лет назад +2

      Hi guys! Klarisse is right on the rule against sharing motions/prompts/questions. I also have my own rules against cheating in general. We can learn together and achieve great things without sacrificing our Scholar's Honor :) But, if you just want to know what I found difficult: the challenge is always, well, challenging. Specifically, I found the Science and History sections must difficult, though this may definitely vary in future rounds. Personally, the tip that I would give you would be to explore the themes beyond the cases given in the curriculum :D They give a great place to start but WSC always goes beyond the surface so you should too! Hope this helps :) Best of luck!

  • @lou3168
    @lou3168 7 лет назад

    i felt like i was good at writing bcuz i got 8th at regionals (2950 score) but then i didn't even get a medal in globals for writing feels so sad.
    can u give me some tips?

    • @AlexaLoste
      @AlexaLoste  7 лет назад

      Don't let a bad writing score bring you down too much! At Prague mini-globals, my team placed 2nd overall in writing; then in ToC, not a single one of us won a writing medal :) It can really depend on your grader and your topic/style. That said, here are a few tips:
      Writing1. Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box! It’s fine to stick to the “traditional” structure of a persuasive essay, and write exceptionally, but you should also consider exploring different ways to persuade through writing, as in this essay by multi-round Champion Scholar Chauncey Lo: facebook.com/groups/alpacascholars/permalink/747186292081784/
      2. A great way to score well is to stand out! I often include an element of narrative or descriptive writing in my essays to hook the reader and keep them interested. Remember that your essay grader has probably read dozens of essays on the same topic before yours, so you really want to differentiate yourself, in a good way, of course!
      3. Incorporate material from the curriculum into your writing, if you can! One thing I notice a lot of scholars do is use their precious 15 minutes of research before the actual writing period to google new evidence, new examples, etc., but before doing so, be sure to look through the research material you already have because oftentimes, prompts actually span over multiple subjects and are not simply limited to the one they are filed under! It’s also a great way to show your mastery of the theme and the curriculum itself.
