No one can touch Ella.I saw her live in 1971.She hobbled out on stage with a cane and these coke bottled glasses.Huge backup band behind her.I was just a kid, but was to go on to be a pro musician/singer.I thought. o.m.g.Then she opened her mouth.Sprang to life and sounded like a 20 yr old.Nobody could ever scat like her (maybe Torme) and here she is with Peterson and other greats in the Jazz world.LOVE and Thank You!
man you can just tell how much passion they have. If I could, I would go back in time just to listen to them live. Better than listening to music nowadays...
Cee I disagree. I don't know about you, but this music is way too old. it's not like the music in this time. plus, why would you see it live? all that noise. just watch it on RUclips.
0:44 she never scatted this song twice the same way. Even the best instrumentalists tend to repeat patterns in solos: then again, there was only one Ella.
I unfortunately did not see Miss Fitzgerald live, but she is the music of my youth. Unmatched, so much class, and zero need for theatrics. Pure talent , grace, and graciousness
This sure makes the stuff that is popular today look shabby. Ella to me is Royalty; just untouchable. My God, to be backed up by Oscar Peterson and Roy Eldridge!
I go back to this from time to time... as a former opera singer, conductor and.....yes Jazz performer (working my way through college) when I'm feeling a bit "blue"..... I go back to this. They are ALL just TOO Great!
do you not hear them applauding? all i see are very respectful people listening to the music. How would they be alive? screaming and clapping their hands? Maybe singing along? I don't see how that is any way respectful to someone focusing on performing.
I think they do. Europeans took their jazz very seriously back then---not sure about now. They knew they were in the presence of genius. They are respectful as they would be at a classical concert.
I can't help but applaud her bravery and this performance for an audience that would not have allowed her into her own concert. This particular clip has weighed on my mind for a while: how can a whole room love the voice but look down on the person? It's foreign to me. It's always a pleasure to hear her sing. Didn't she have perfect pitch?
Man its so great that they recorded these events 1957. Ella never fluffed a note, even the ones she swooped up to on purpose.... what a group, OP slipped in at about 2:00 minutes, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown... ha I was 1 yr old.
Sang that shit ella OMG!!!! Voice truly delectable... They can study her style for a 1000 years and no one would ever come close.. True effortless greatless!!! #Muvah
Wow. Just amazing. She was at the peak of her vocal powers in the late 1950s. Amazing range, a clarity in her voice unlike any other singer, and the ability to interpret a song like nobody else. And that band is pretty amazing, too. Thanks for posting the video.
She’s so amazing. I’m a Montrealer and my Mom grew up here too She passed away last year at 96. She went to High School with Oscar Peterson’s sister and used to go and see Oscar play at Victoria Hall in Westmount. That was back in the late 1930s early 40s. Apparently we had quite a Jazz scene here at the time. I’m 61 and we’ve always had great shows here. God Bless Ellas spirit and love.
April 25: Happy birthday and RIP Singer Ella Fitzgerald "The First Lady of Song", 14 x Grammy Award winner, Presidential Medal of Freedom, National Medal of Arts, Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (1917-1996) Thank you and God bless. Thanks for the upload, ReelinInTheYears66. Blessings
I think the audience probably got it. Look how stately singer and musicians comport themselves. The audience followed suit. That is how we did it in 1957. It was great then and it still is
Ella was simply the greatest there was. There will never be another like her. That stupid audience was blessed enough to witness magic and they were too ridiculous to realize it. From 1957 to 2017 and Ella STILL slays!
In my book, regardless of genre or gender Ella is the best singer ever (or rather "vocalist", who doesn't have to rely on lyrics). She had everything - voice, articulation, groove, narrativeness, musicality and humor to boot. And here, she's backed by all those jazz giants including O.P.
Love this woman scatting no one can touch this woman natural scarring talent she has a beautiful rich singing tone especially her lower register. R.I.P Legendary Ms Ella Fitzgerald
Pretty heavy... Ella in her prime, backed up by the Oscar Peterson Trio + 2 ( Eldridge and Jones). It's great that Herb Ellis got so much solo space, and it's always a privilege to get to see Eldridge (the bridge between Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie) play. Brown and Jones are brilliant, Peterson supernaturally so. They're in Europe somewhere... Back then, most of Europe always seemed to appreciate our musical contributions more than we, ourselves, did.
+Staci Derfelt just got to mental over the url, ella , s beautiful, as well the very best singer , and Im half irish , half apache , lol no color in new mexico usa
I first saw Ella in Harlem at the Savoy Ballroom in 1937 when she was with the great Chick Webb Band. She had been "discovered" by Chick in 1934 when she sang in an amateur contest at the Apollo Theater. She was just 16 at that time.
You're wrong. I see sheer pleasure and ectasy on the audience faces.Things were different way back then. Look at the joy they show and the generous applause they give the performers when they finished. Wonderful!!
Thank you ReelinInTheYears66 for preserving great archival footage. And thank you for not letting us get through even 2 seconds of it without an annoying banner. Great performance; video ruined.

Ella was only 54 in 1971 and didn't hobble anywhere at that time.
She had a problem with cataracts that year, so the cane would’ve aided her
A musical giant.
Fuballu someone mentions Torme! Hes so painfully overlooked s.d his scatting was damn near on par with Ella
No one could touch her...the soulful voice...the dynamics...the improv...the complete muse...no autotune
man you can just tell how much passion they have. If I could, I would go back in time just to listen to them live. Better than listening to music nowadays...
EDGY #wronggeneration Ook and Aak were way better on drums made of skin and wood
couldn't have said it any better
And strings made of cow veins
you said a mouth full

Ella clearly owns this song.
Let's be fair:
Once Ella sings it, whatever it is, she owns it.
@@tuxguys depends on if Ray Charles has sung it
@@person3538 I agree with you, provisionally.
@@tuxguys 🙏
Every artist on that stage is jazz "Royalty", and boy! Do they stand up and prove it. Sensational!
seriously! I thought I saw Papa Jo on drums in the back but wasn't sure til I read this and went back to the video description
This sure makes the stuff that is popular today look shabby. Ella to me is Royalty; just untouchable. My God, to be backed up by Oscar Peterson and Roy Eldridge!
they are all so joyful. Music running through them like a heavenly river.
What lovely words
I go back to this from time to time... as a former opera singer, conductor and.....yes Jazz performer (working my way through college) when I'm feeling a bit "blue"..... I go back to this. They are ALL just TOO Great!
"Hey,Ive got an idea:Get the best band in the world together, and then have Ella front it."Said God.
God, I was so happy when I saw Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown in this! and that scat!!
Oh my God so good... the audience is dead. Does not realize they are in the presence of greatness
do you not hear them applauding? all i see are very respectful people listening to the music. How would they be alive? screaming and clapping their hands? Maybe singing along? I don't see how that is any way respectful to someone focusing on performing.
Nope no clue
I think they do. Europeans took their jazz very seriously back then---not sure about now. They knew they were in the presence of genius. They are respectful as they would be at a classical concert.
Yes, they defenitely looked that way , needing to look at others to even know how they should be, a real shame !
1950s America and a black band.
Jo Jones always smiling!! Great smile and great drumming 🎶🎶
the man that "drove" the Basie band!!!
This is EPITOME of class! I wish music could go back to this! 👌🏾👍🏾👌🏾
Her bright eyes. She is just incredible!
Simply breathtaking! Lady Ella is one the God's Musical Masterpieces. Amazing! :)
Bless her for letting the rest of the band have a go
I can't help but applaud her bravery and this performance for an audience that would not have allowed her into her own concert. This particular clip has weighed on my mind for a while: how can a whole room love the voice but look down on the person? It's foreign to me.

Humans can be cruel but the gift of the spirit can’t be hidden from the world
How cool to have been in that band for the jam sessions alone.
Way to show people how its done Ella Fitzgerald, over 50 years later!
Man its so great that they recorded these events 1957. Ella never fluffed a note, even the ones she swooped up to on purpose.... what a group, OP slipped in at about 2:00 minutes, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown... ha I was 1 yr old.

UGH THIS AUDIENCE DOESNT FREAKING DESERVE HER AMAZING BEAUTIFUL VOICE
People are typically calm like this at jazz concerts though? Typical jazz crowd

Absolutely sublime rhythm section!

OHMYGOODNESS...I can listen to this for HOURS...Ella is my musical Icon,,,#LOVEHER
I think the audience probably got it. Look how stately singer and musicians comport themselves. The audience followed suit. That is how we did it in 1957. It was great then and it still is
Hello 👋 Ruth
How are you doing today
Ella was simply the greatest there was. There will never be another like her. That stupid audience was blessed enough to witness magic and they were too ridiculous to realize it. From 1957 to 2017 and Ella STILL slays!
I love her so much along with Billie holiday and a lot of other great women of music
Queen of scatt
April 25: Happy birthday Ms Ella Fitzgerald "First Lady of Jazz." (1917-1996) RIP. Blessings
Beautiful Beautiful Thankyou for sharing..."Now That is Class the Best I have ever heard or seen x
I love Ella so much. Raw talent and a passion for music, brings so much joy to me. What I'd do to be able to see this back then.
In my book, regardless of genre or gender Ella is the best singer ever (or rather "vocalist", who doesn't have to rely on lyrics). She had everything - voice, articulation, groove, narrativeness, musicality and humor to boot. And here, she's backed by all those jazz giants including O.P.
Fantastico , maravillosa Ella Fitzgerald y la banda de Oscar Peterson .
Best singer ever 👌
All these musicians are legends, true! They are so at ease. Just watch the pleasure they have to play together... :D
She is such a treasure... I can't put it into words
Love this woman scatting no one can touch this woman natural scarring talent she has a beautiful rich singing tone especially her lower register. R.I.P Legendary Ms Ella Fitzgerald
Une voix parfaite!
Pretty heavy...

I cried ): I wish I was born earlier.
I love how everyone in the comments is freaking out about the watermark and I'm over here lime, I love you Ella!
+Staci Derfelt just got to mental over the url, ella , s beautiful, as well the very best singer , and Im half irish , half apache , lol no color in new mexico usa
ELLA ,una joya nunca me cansaría de escucharla.
what phenomenal talent on that stage!
none ever greater than this lady!
She was without doubt the best jazz musical instrument that ever was!
I was born in 1991, too! And you're absolutely right! I love this, too.
AWESOME!
Simply the best voice in modern music. Period.
Fitzerald is the queen of the jazz!
thank you so much for sharing this!!!
voice of the century
i remember singing this in chorus for our spring concert when i was in 3rd grade
Simply marvelous, Lady Ella !!!
If Ella isn't there, I'm coming back.
the best! there are no more singers like her although I was surprised when I heard lady gaga sing a normal song.
louztyp Gaga and Winehouse passed the Tony Bennett test with flying colours. My country woman kd lang exceled.
Ella!!!!! Eres lo..Máximo.. desde 1958 en Lima, el resto de Músicos tambien son muy Buenos, que combinación tan..Perfecta..
This is the era where jazz was dying down and rock and roll is more prevalent than ever
My, my this is excellent.
The audience doesn't seem to comprehend what it is they're hearing. And, at 3:22 the woman in the background is shaking her head...
I was born in 1991 and love this. Today's songs they focus on the bodies and not on the voices.
Everyone having a blast!
Scat doll !! You do it the BEST ... woo Hoo!!! 💜🎶💜
😲 wow jeez i like the song of her!!! Im impressed🤔😳😆
Genial!!!
1999 im 14 and lovin this!!

NO REALLY
Very nice! April 25, 1917 ...a legend was born.
the Queen of jazz Ella bow to you
Ella was the Queen.Incomparable.
Happy Birthday to the First Lady of Jazz,Miss Ella!!!
I first saw Ella in Harlem at the Savoy Ballroom in 1937 when she was with the great Chick Webb Band. She had been "discovered" by Chick in 1934 when she sang in an amateur contest at the Apollo Theater. She was just 16 at that time.
VERY VERY NICE PERFORMANCE FROM ELLA FIDGERALD WHEN SHE IS SINGING :"I DON'T MEAN A THING IF IT AIN'T GOT THAT SWING
Unequaled. Ella had full control of her vocal range, with no weak notes. Very few singers, even among the greats, could make this claim..
yes this is incredibly music good it's too bad today they don't make this anymore
Many of the folks in the audience look like they don't get it. Guess they ain't got that swing.
You're right they don't got that swing 😂😂😂
its 1957 . different era.
Ya, I agrre, they were somewhere else, in their heads .
You're wrong. I see sheer pleasure and ectasy on the audience faces.Things were different way back then. Look at the joy they show and the generous applause they give the performers when they finished. Wonderful!!
There's hardly anything more annoying than people showing off how they "get it" watching jazz.
When I die, if I don't hear this music playing, I'll know I went to the bad place.
this song gives me the chills
speech less...
Herb Ellis. O.P. Philly Jo Jones. Roy Eldridge. Backing up The First Lady of Jazz.
Take a bow.
Yes !!! Thank You!!! 1Nation4Life
Declaro-te minha rainha! 🌻
BRAVO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look at their smiles!
Who cares about the audience the band is feeling it. That's the best part.
love it !!!
Thank you ReelinInTheYears66 for preserving great archival footage. And thank you for not letting us get through even 2 seconds of it without an annoying banner. Great performance; video ruined.
