Domingo's voice is gorgeous, to be sure, but Carreras is the most moving Don Jose, tortured by his passion for Carmen. He is quick, lively, moving from hope to confusion to despair, deciding in a moment to give rein to his darkest passion. Domingo is stolid and unconvincing here, I'm sorry to say.
Yikes I love Meier but this isn’t her role. And the production is hideous. What did they do during rehearsals? It looks like they didn’t even stage it.
A most awkward staging. She walks right to him to be knifed. She doesn't seem determined to flee, afraid, rebellious, or anything one might imagine for Carmen. Even the greatness of Domingo's voice can't save this.
