- Toucan Calling Sound
Toucans are tropical birds belonging to the Ramphastidae family, which is close in relation to American barbets. Known for their vibrant plumage and distinctive large bills, these birds are represented by five genera and comprise over 40 species.
Living predominantly in trees, toucans typically lay two to four white eggs in their nests, which are often found in tree hollows or holes created by other creatures such as woodpeckers. Despite their bill's limited utility for excavation, toucans rely on these nests for breeding. Upon hatching, toucan chicks are born without feathers. Unlike migratory birds, toucans are permanent residents of their habitat, often seen either in pairs or small groups. Their bill-fencing and wrestling behaviors are believed to be methods of establishing dominance within their social hierarchy, a behavior that parallels that of hornbills in Africa and Asia, indicating convergent evolution.
Native to the Neotropics, toucans inhabit regions spanning from Southern Mexico through Central America, extending southward into South America until northern Argentina. While predominantly found in lowland tropical areas, certain species within the Andigena genus, residing in mountainous regions of the Andes, can endure temperate climates at high elevations, even reaching the tree line.
