    I bought my 350z new in 2006. I noticed right at the break in of 1200 mile there was no oil on the dipstick. It somehow consumed 1.25 - 1.5 Qts per 1k miles. Those engines are trash. The dealer fought me on this and after 40k miles, I got a new engine. It burned oil as well. I didn't even drive it hard. My GM 4.3 vortec and Toyota FJ burned no noticeable amount of oil between oil changes and probably driven harder.

  • @betahours9416
    @betahours9416 8 месяцев назад

    well on one end of it: vented catch cans might eliminate blow by of oil vapor in the crank case that gets past the piston rings, not so much the oil following through the cylinder head. so if you have worn rings or burnt up guide seals: u are burning oil no matter what.
    granted i have the non rev up: I've been running the ad1 sealed system catch can for like 3years. Never had sludge in the sealed catch can. I would imagine that's from running E or Blown head gasket or if you are just hard on your engine oil. the oil in my sealed system is always the same color as the engine oil that is drained out. Also if you live in a state with strict emissions the vented can is not gonna fly.
    Id say keep a known good PCV valve in the passenger bank, and sealed system to keep excessive oil from getting sucked into the intake manifold. If there is a little bit of oil in the intake manifold that can reduce IAT's. and your ports shouldnt get sludged because its port injected. Realistically PCV system is really only for cold starts when the rings haven't expanded with the piston thats went you will get the most blow by on a higher mileage engine. An engine at operating temp with good base mechanical compression really has no need for a vented system.

      @@lizbethmoreno9063 I can't speak for my boy motodyne but for me, it has been working really well. I probably burn about 1 qt of oil every 3000/4,000 miles. Before I was burning maybe 1qt every 1,500 to 2,000 miles. I did have to change the whole system once because I got lazy and let the catch can overfill. It messed up my filter and it was just easier to replace the whole thing. Generally I try to empty it out every month as well as clean the filter with a hose. I live in the Phoenix so it doesn't get very full in the summer but for some reason in the winter it gets full pretty quickly and you see a lot of "gunk" that would be in your engine. Hope that helps!

    The fwd vq35de the backside of the throttle body is where the gases re enter the intake side. From the pcv valve. That hose on the injen or factory intake pipe pulls air, on the altima vq35de.

  • @patrickkillabrew6207
    @patrickkillabrew6207 3 года назад +1

    Title is wrong. Catch can (vented or not) will not fix existing oil consumption. Vented catch can just redirects blow by to the can / atmosphere instead of sending it to the air intake. It does nothing to stop oil from escaping past the piston rings. Also, don’t fear a clogged PCV valve. Driving around with a clogged PCV value can cause problems and should be avoided, but a clogged PCV value will throw a CEL. You’ll get a warning.

Pcv valves were clogged and it caused some damage; had to replace both valve cover gaskets. Although that was fixed, it still smokes when I start the car. Could this be gunk residue? Will a catch can help this? If so... what setup do you recommend for the VQ37VHR? I’m so bummed. Started smoking the day after I bought the car. Didn’t smoke on the test drive. Thanks in advance! Hi sir thanks for the info. I just purchased a 2006 g35 6mt revup less than a week ago and been trying to figurenout what to do about the catch can. I have been wanting this car for years and watched several videos about the oil consumption before i even bought it. But anyways my question is i thought catch can setups generally work by utilizing vaccum to suck the blow by into the catch can filter it and send the cleaner air back into intake. Correct me if im wrong but this seems more like almost a pcv delete almost. Just from the crank case ventalation side as well. My question is do you still have yours set up like this and if you do how has it been working for you these past years. And finally do you see and blow by in the catch can ever and if so how much how often.

    These VQ motors really start using oil when the cats are starting to go bad, Especially the rev Up, which leads to galley gasket failure and or oil pump failure. If you have no other issues the catch can will help alot. Great Video ! I deleted cats, Did timing kit, galley gaskets, oil pump, water pump, and a catch can. What you don't address is just how a catch can would help reduce oil consumption. It doesn't. Modern engines are designed to consume oil, from day one. They do this to reduce engine friction by lowering the tolerances in the piston rings and valve sleeves, which allows some oil to slip by. While this does increase gas mileage (and to some extent improve performance) it does directly lead to oil consumption. A catch can will capture this oil, or at least some of it, but not return it to the engine so you do still lose oil. It will help keep your intake system free from oil sludge to a degree but it does not reduce oil consumption. If they were smart, they would just increase the size of the oil pan so your engine would hold more oil to start with and the consumption would never reduce the oil amount to dangerous levels, but hey, that would cost more money and they are not likely to do that. Just thought I'd make that a bit more clear. I do enjoy your videos though. Keep up the good work!

    Motordyne G35, I'm thinking that since I am in California, I would have to undo this setup before I have to go get a smog check. Don't think it would pass the visual smog inspection with the vented catch can. I always wondered why they would set up an engine to suck oil vapors and blow by back in to the intake system in the first place, just seems stupid when they know in the end it can damage your engine due to the sludge build up over time.
    If they have a chart for it they knew it was an issue....
    Anyways looks easy enough to do to my VQ's thanks for the info and clear explanation of the fix. I have a 03 G35 5AT a 05 G35 6MT REVUP and a 04 I35. Many thanks!! G's out!!

    Very informative, thank you. Being a frenchie, there's a few things I'd like to confirm with you to make sure I install everything correctly.
    So to start off, I would need to plug the intake tube port and the "front" pcv port. The other pcv port (the one with the valve) would be connected to the vented catch can. Finally, to complete the system, a hose would go from the catch can to the driver side valve cover.
    Everything is clearly shown in the video except for that last part: where exactly would I have to plug the hose going from the catch can to the valve cover? I'm guessing all I would have to do is to follow the hose that was originally plugged on the intake tube in order to find it?
    I'm no mechanic so sorry if my question seems a bit dumb

      You really need to check the level cold to get the most clear reading; BEFORE you start the engine that day. Expansion after heat will never be 25% so run 3/4 through the hash IF you are that concerned about checking it cold. I generally run 3/4 the way up the sticks hashes; at cold. I even run a heavier oil (Rotella 15/40), so you will be just fine.

    thanks so much wasn't sure if there was 2 pcv valves or not....so if I delete my passenger side and have a vented catch can (plenum port plugged up just like the intake port) my hose just will connect to the drivers side valve cover with no modification? pretty much I'm asking cause I saw a pcv delete video and the guy drilled out the pcv himself and hollowed out the passenger side but I don't remember if he did that to the drivers side or if he jus vented it with a filter (like he did to passenger side) sorry if little confusing thank God you posted this video I was about to buy a non vented catch can or install a jegs air oil separator look at the videos on them they don't have one for g35 but watch the Evo video and you can see how well it works and I know this because on Amazon on he jegs separator a guy posted a pic of it installed in-between the plenum and pcv valve and says it's great and catches every bit of oil I was even thinking of installing non-vented catch can end then in between the couch can and the plenum installing a Jegs air oil separator just to make sure I get every did of oil and sludge that could possibly go back into the plenum.... let me no what you think check out the Jegs separator on Amazon and look at the reviews the only pic on the reviews is it installed on a g35...

    • @MotordyneG35
      @MotordyneG35  7 лет назад

      My opinion on Jegs air oil separator? Ummm....worthless. With both ports plugged, oil vaper can NOT get into the system. Jegs air oil separator is for a closed system, not a vented system. Both ports plugged is better than any separator, the path of entry is completely closed.
      The picture in the video, is a hollowed out valve that comes that way. No drilling required. You can still use the PVC if you want, but a PVC delete is better. Yes, the driver side will connect, but the hose will not be long enough. Bring your old short hose to the parts store, find a hose that fits to your desired length.

    I heard you want your catch cans to be same height as where the tubing starts so the oil can properly get in. Yours kind of goes up before going back down to the catch can. Assuming this has not given you an issue?
    Also, the vented catch can is different from how things were back in the day as far as how the vapors get in the air since you have that filter at the top of catch can. How often would that filter need to be cleaned/replaced?
    If I bought a VQ35 motor, do I just need to make sure I have good compression, then slap this on to avoid related oil consumption issues? Meaning if the pistons/rings were somewhat bad, would this save my motor in a way?

    • @jamesfarmer5349
      @jamesfarmer5349 4 года назад

      No, if you already have pretty bad oil consumption then this will only delay some of the consumption. It isn’t a long term fix or even a short term fix at that. It helps but the VQ has that flaw that can’t be fixed with only catch can. I recommend changing head gasket, and cleaning out piston rings before adding the catch can as that will guarantee a longer oil consumption rate. Anyway I have a 2004 Nissan 350Z, around 107,000 miles and it burns oil moderately but then again it also depends how hard you drive. It’s my baby so I only drive it hard sometimes not too often. For me I burn around 1 quart around 2-3k miles which is significantly better than when I didn’t add my catch can and cleaned out the engine. Good Luck

  • @lemmy999
    @lemmy999 6 лет назад

    Great video. Thanks! I understand how the PCV system works and I understand that it results in making your intake nasty/oily. But I don't understand how using a catch can reduces oil consumption. Would the oil that was being burned in the combustion chamber just be deposited in the catch can? It seems that if the oil dropped 10mm in 1,000 mi before the catch can install, it would still be dropping 10mm on the dipstick in 1,000 mi after the catch can. Am I missing something?

    • @MotordyneG35
      @MotordyneG35  6 лет назад +1

      lemmy999 ....no you got it. The problem isn't consumption, but the sludge left behind from the burning of oil. Stop the burning of oil or overtime the sludge left behind from burning so much oil eventually becomes a problem.

      Bone dry my ass. Pull off your intake tube and look at all the black residue in your throttle body. The real reason is closed system are legal is why people do it and vented systems are illegal. Just like with anything illegal, if it is illegal, that means it is the good shit.

      When you get the car dyno tuned, uprev offers Infiniti G35 UpRev ARC Burnout Mode. So on your tune, you can have this activated. Z1 motorsports can hook you up, please say I referred you if you call them to talk about it.

      Motordyne G35 sweet thanks for quick response one more question is there a way to find someone that already has the tuner and have them "install" the tune on my car or do I have to buy the tuner myself like if I find a shop that works on VQs can they use there tuner on mine just to save money so I don't have to buy the tuner sorry if this is a obvious question or stupid haha I don't know much about tuning and kinda new to the g35 life

    • @MotordyneG35
      @MotordyneG35  7 лет назад

      Yes, the software is called uprev, not tuner. So you find a tuner who is familiar with VQ's or does " uprev" and you will be fine. They can all do it. There is a difference between a shop and tuner. Shops fix broken cars. Tuners do not, they just do dyno runs and tune the car. Yes, the have the knowledge to fix, but that is not what they do. That is a repair shop.

    • @MotordyneG35
      @MotordyneG35  7 лет назад

      No matter what you are paying for the software. Just like you pay for microsoft windows. It is $350 for the software "uprev" and then the tuner charges like $300-$400 for the tune.

    Thanks for the video. My 05 sedan consumes about 1 quart every 400-600 miles mainly because I drive it pretty hard. I just recently put in a PCV valve delete kit from ProjectImport. But after watching your video, I am planning on doing the same setup as yours. Is your catch can bolted down to anything and did you have to fabricate anything else to make it fit?

    • @MotordyneG35
      @MotordyneG35  7 лет назад

      My vented catch can is the exact same setup as Projectimport, they are professional tuners. The link to ebay where I show you how to get the exact same part for the PCV delete at a much cheaper rate. The only thing, I did differently is the mounting point for the can. No it is just hanging there, not bolted or anything. The 2 rubber tubes going to it hold it just perfectly in that spot. You have to wiggle it and just figure out like a puzzle piece to get it to go down behind the windshield washer fluid reservoir.
      Yeah I drive it hard too, everyday. With the PCV delete it will actually consume a little more, but the proper way because the blow by oil from mashing it, isn't going back through the motor. Without the PCV valve, it is always open allowing oil vaper, to always escape from the valve covers. Instead, of waiting on it to be pressurized and have a vacuum pull open the PCV to recycle it through the motor. It is going to the vented catch can. It will consume less if you are off the throttle of course.

    • @dc2long
      @dc2long 7 лет назад

      Oh man I was hoping for an oil consumption fix but I guess the only way is to not race every bus on the street haha. I just reached 170k and I feel like I'm going through 5 quarts of oil every 3-4k miles, even when I mix it with Lucas oil stabilizer. But the car still pulls strong and I plan to keep it for a while.
      This is what I just put on the car the other week in hopes to keep the engines longevity. www.projectimport.com/store/350z-g35-oil-consumption-fix-vq35de-and-revup-nissan-infiniti-pcv-valve-delete-and-right-valve-cover-breather-kit/
      But I'll probably go with your exact same setup since the can fits snug in that little area and no fabrication was needed. Hopefully this helps with the little oil I keep finding in my 6th cylinder every time I change the sparks.
      How often do you have to drain the can?

    • @MotordyneG35
      @MotordyneG35  7 лет назад +1

      My brother still has his 1994 prelude at 255,000 miles and he has to add a ton of oil to it too. 1 time forgetting to add oil and that is all it takes for an engine to blow at that age, other than that it still pulls strong. I'm at 160k and mine pulls way better than it did new, that is for sure, but I've got a tune and performance parts.
      Before I got a vented catch can, I did that exact same set up on my own. That is cool, the kit includes the pcv delete that screws into the valve cover, still a good buy, but you still need a vented can. The only problem, you will find out soon is the oil vaper and blow-by doesn't have any can to go into, so it will just leak all over your valve cover. After 1 month, you will have a mess. It will look like you spilled oil all over on the valve cover and then let it dry for a month.
