It was the Big Four for a while. It refers to the period of time during which these four dominated the tour for many years. Obviously with Murray lagging behind, but clearly ahead of the rest of the tour. It doesn't mean that Murray was the 4th best player of all time (he wasn't). There is a great Wikipedia page about the term.

Roger did the sensible, mature thing in retiring and accepting that he wasnt going to be able to re-capture his form despite his best efforts. Watching some of the older players in decline continue to limp over the finish line in another desperate attempt to win another title is a sorry sight because as we all know - as do they - they won't be winning slams any more. Serena tried, Nadal tried, Murray tried, Novak is trying but looks increasingly unlikely to succeed.
