    Purchased my first, roughly $40 pair of cedar shoe trees in Asia, and I thought they were pretty decent. But now I'm thankfully and regrettably seeing all the major differences that make them pale in comparison to the ones shown in the vid. Just shows that a higher price tag doesn't always equate to better quality. Will snatch a few of these shoe trees once I'm back home in the States.

    Hi Kirby, I love your channel and I watch them over and over again. I can't believe that some men have to be told how to shine their shoes. I learned everything about men's clothing and grooming. My Father was a very well known tonsorial artist in my city of Providence Rhode Island. I learned how to shine shoes, shave, tie a necktie, fold a suit jacket and so on by watching him and my Grandfather. These things are so important and necessary. You are providing knowledge to men who have no clue what to do. I can't get enough of your videos and I find what you do is very noble. Thanks so much for everything. Sincerely, Steven Degli Angeli

    I really enjoy your videos. Your soft, eloquent comments are real pleasure to listen. It is a fresh breath in today's world to have somebody like you available on You Tube. Great job. By the way I have a question for you which has nothing to do with the content of this video but I have seen on other video. I have been teched by my parents long time ago that it is inappropriate to shake other man hand with other hand in the pocket and in general keeping hands in the pocket being in the presence of others is not correct (lack of respect in some way). I have noticed that in USA this trend is very common at least based on what I see in TV. What is your opinion?

    Lasted shoe trees really are the cream of the crop. I can't speak about shoe trees from bespoke makers, however I own a few pairs of St Crispin's MTM and for 1/3 of the cost of bespoke you can get a lasted shoe tree with many features of bespoke.

    Hi Kirby! Thanks for the video - super helpful for beginner shoe nerds like myself. I wanted to ask your opinion on using regular shoe trees (like the $36 cedar one) for boots as well? Ankle boots and knee high boots. Do you think they should work just fine or is it crucial for boots to use boots-specific shoe trees? They’re much more expensive it seems (on your site at least). Thanks so much!

    Thanks for the video ! I thought that the the entire say...almost half of the front of the shoe needed to be fully filled in to help smoothen out the creasing because I notice in my shoe's there was some room near the creasing. I noticed you said it has to basically flatten and straighten it out rather then fill out, is this correct?

    Great video as always. I have about 6 pairs of standard Jos a Banks cedar shoe trees, no split toes. I was lucky to pick them up on a crazy deal years back when they were sub $10 each. My question is would it make sense to slowly upgrade those shoe trees to the split-toe shoe trees you recommended?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 лет назад

      Brandizzle88 I certainly think it would be worth upgrading. Even if it’s just a pair a year. Shoe trees are incredibly durable. There is no reason you couldn’t use them the rest of your life.

    Hi Kirby, I have two questions. Firstly, is it recommended to leave shoe trees in the shoe permanently when not being worn?
    Secondly, I wear, I own a lot of boots. I find boot trees very hard to come by and when I do find them (usually when I travel through Europe) they are very expensive. Do you think it ok to use standard shoe trees in boots until such time as they can be replaced with full boot trees? Best regards

      @harrisoncameronwedgeworth2441 5 лет назад +1

      KurJan&Urbano what kind of boots? With like Chelsea or chukka boots, it won’t hurt the shoe if you use a normal shoe tree. And yes, when you’re not wearing it, tree it. With like, western boots, I know a lot of people use trees for the shaft and not the upper where your foot is. I have also seen some who use trees with no regard to the shaft

      Yes the other commenter was right. Long term storage with a cider tree will deter bugs eating your shoes up. Not much likes cider in nature but it smells nice. Boots with regular trees will keep the main body right.

    Hi Kirby, a very informative and great video. But I do have a question from personal experience. I own a few pairs of shoe trees. When I bought them, the salesmen said that I shouldn’t leave them in my shoes too long. My shoes would get flat he said. Is this true, or can you store the shoes you don’t often wear with shoe trees in them? Because I think the purpose of the shoe trees is to not let your shoes bend. Hope to hear from you.

    I have collected a good amount of shoes by now, and I was wondering: do you need a pair of shoe trees for each pair or can you have three or four, put them on when you're done using the shoes and, some days after, put them in another pair you've worn?
    Thank you in advance :)

    Damn! Nice shoes. I've always thought that wholecuts look a bit weird on account of the line where the laces go (I can't remember the correct term) just terminates in the middle of the leather. The brogueing hides this very nicely.

  • @Czechbound

    That was great. Here in Prague, shoe trees are all of the same type - probably the same manufacturer. They retail for about 35 euro. They are all made in China. As the purpose is to keep the shape, and manage moisture, I'm surprised that some high end brands ( eg Crockett and Jones ) have their highest priced shoe trees lacquered ie not natural wood. The lacquer will form a waterproof barrier, and defeats the moisture management goal. Remember, the moisture on the inside of the shoe is sweat, ie it is salty. It's the salts that do the real damage as they will continue to dry out the leather after the shoes are touch dry.

      Robert Pearson I’ve tried it once or twice... but never found the benefit worth the work. We do sell a cedar oil that can be used to reoil the wood, which is more effective and easier. But the only benefit is aeronautic. Wood just as absorbing, but not as aeromatic.

    Hi Kirby, how about dress boots? should I use the same shoe trees? I did not see many for boots on the market.

    I have a couple old pairs of leather children's shoes. They have sagged a bit and I was wondering if there was a shoe tree for these, quite small, shoes to give them some shape back? I also have an old pair of leather skates and was wondering about shoe trees for taller shoes like a skate or boot? Thanks!

    Kirby, what if I rotate by shoes daily. It is still important to have shoe trees?

    Should I tie my shoes when the tree is in the shoe? Also should I shine my shoes with the tree inserted?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  5 лет назад +3

      I always tie my shoes after I insert my shoe trees. And I prefer to shine my shoes with the trees inside. You need something to rub up against. You can either insert your hand into the shoe or use a shoe tree.

    Just bought a pair of chukka boots. Do I insert the shoe trees before or after tying the laces? Or is it fine to leave them unlaced with the shoe trees inserted?

    Hi Kirby, is there a way to take out creases in shoes if they have never had shoe trees inserted?

    • @daftmell5237
      @daftmell5237 5 лет назад +1

      you will need to get the leather to soften up, probably using steam or warm water and then let them dry with shoetrees inside. watch some restauration videos online, you'll see

    Is it bad if you use the trees if they are super tight as you mentioned? Ordered a 2 pack off of Amazon and they are quite tight

    Lirby, I have several pairs of relatively ($1,000+) expensive snip toe cowboy boots. Does anyone make a shoe tree for snip toes or is a split toe tree just fine? I really enjoy all of your videos even though I seldom wear street
    shoes.
    Thank you!

    How do you polish a shoe that is either hand-painted or has a color gradient, for example a darker tone towards the back and the toes? Should you use polish in the lightest color of the shoe, multiple colors or even black on none black shoes to reapply the darker tone?

    Any recommendations for getting shoe trees for dress boots? I find that sometimes it can be hard to slide the heel part into the shoe and some shoe shops like church's have recommended using travel shoe trees with a narrow heel. Thank you

    I have trees for all my dress and formal shoes but I can't find trees with the volume to fill out casual Derbys (e.g. Barker 'Nairn') or for work boots, not even the critical part of the vamp which flexes when walking.

    I think you missed a great source of shoe trees, especially for the young, who are just beginning to establish a wardrobe, and are a bit short of cash: the goodwill, or other thrift store. There are people in this world who think that when they can no longer smell the aroma of cedar, it's time to buy new shoe trees. They send the old, "worn out" shoe trees to the goodwill stores, where we, who have a piece of fine grit sandpaper, can, in just a few seconds, have them smelling like new!✨ Just don't tell too many people, or our source for good, but cheap shoe trees, will dry up!
    Have a very happy New year!!
