The cover to Billy's "Nylon Curtain" album reminds me of the cover to a New York Times bestseller novel.
Yup he said it that he wanted it to look like a “paperback book” you’d see in the airport. He’s such an incredible mind man wow…
In my opinion, Billy should be remembered for two albums in particular, The Stranger and The Nylon Curtain
I agree but love 52nd Street
Me too. Not one song on there that doesn't catch my attention
My own personal favourite is Turnstiles.
Glass Houses and 52nd Street tho
I’m a sucker for An Innocent Man
I think I have to agree with him. I love his albums, but I always find myself wanting to listen to this one. Most of his records are basically pop rock. This one has a lot of progressive influence to it. For example, the synths on Surprises, and the way that Scandinavian Skies develops. And it's impossible to miss the Beatles tributes, but he does them very well. Great album
There is no one in music that I respect more than Billy Joel.
What are your favorite tunes by Billy?
one of my all time favorite records...MASTERPIECE!
"That's a gay video!"
Haahahaha, 30 years later he realizes. Billy's a funny guy!
lol that’s just what they did real men didn’t care
@Mike Davis 🙄🙄🙄
His comments about the "Allentown" video made me laugh out loud. "That's the gayest video."
Ha ha! Me too! I'd always just figured Billy was experimenting between Ex #1 & Ex #2...
+Lynn Turman hot video
It is nice to see that Billy hasn't drank the Kool Aid so to speak when it comes to Political Correctness LOL i laughed out loud.
Yeah, I just laughed out loud, too. :-)
Seeing you perform live, still remains my all-time favorite concert~!
My favorite album from Billy. It’s well-written and deep. Love it.
It's intense in its depth. There might always be something new to discover on this album every time you listen to it. Hearing his point of view on the recording process just adds another layer to listen for...
I heard him say once in an interview that his approach to songwriting and performing was at least partially based on defying the typical notion that to be a rock star, a person couldn't be "too good" of a musician, or "too good" at lyric writing. I'll always remember that because it's all at once respectful to the art aspect, in that he wants to put his best into what he does, and cocky at the same time...
This is Billy's Sergeant pepper to me
You have the radio-friendly hits still hitting pop radio with pressure and Allentown but the deep cuts on the are just so stellar.
Especially cuts Laura with the unannounced f-bomb, and the absolutely Beatlesque Scandinavian Skies.
And of course the fan-favorite Vietnam off to war goodnight Saigon.
my favorite album from Billy is 52 st excellent album my personal favorite cut is Rosalind as Eyes which is very diverse and also favorite album An Innocent Manchester all of those songs hits hands down but there will never be such a beautiful song as Just the Way You Are Thank you BILLY for the music and your honest and humble talent to of all your albums!
Genius. I play that album all the time. I first bought it on CD in Manchester, UK in 1993.
HILARIOUS!!! That's a gay video!!! Billy Joel is the GREATEST and I agree... It's my favorite album of his... I heard Allentown on Sirius today and was thinking about this album... Where's the Orchestra??? She's right on time... Surprises... GREAT stuff!!!! Thanks Billy!
As much as I love your stuff, and I do, Nylon Curtain is not only your greatest album in your catalog, but I have consistently placd that album in my Top 10 of all-time greatest albums. That album is up there with Captain Fantastic, Revolver, Full Moon Fever, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Abbey Road... And for me, "Laura" is probably the coolest song I've ever heard. And believe me, The Stranger and Turnstiles run neck and neck when it comes to your second best album.
In my opinion, I like 52nd street more, but the nylon curtain is rlly good too
The Nylon Curtain is also my favorite BJ album. Captain Fantastic is my favorite Elton album personally. All the albums you mentioned are great as well especially Revolver and GBYBR.
We agree Billy, it is your best effort ever! Your Sgt Pepper's, thank you!
Laura is a flat out Beatle track, the guitar solo I swear George played in 66
A Lennon like record for sure
Amazing album!!!
LOL, "the gayest video!" I had to go back and watch the Allentown video after this, which cracked me up. Haven't seen it in 25+ years I think.
Now I won't be able to stop laughing inappropriately whenever I see that vid.
Brilliant album from first note to last. I was 12 when I bought it. Second album I ever purchased.
Hello Billy ! I m French and i love you since tour bigining ;) 💞
A little late. But I must say Mister JOEL is one of the greatest composer, musicien and singer of the 20th century. And I listen to a lot of music since I was a young kid.
oooohhh yeah!!!
I didnt like it at first, not what I had expected of him, but it grew on me over the years.
This is a good album!
Wonder what are the odds of getting one of the signed boxed sets 3,000 to 1? Billy went thru a lot of crap getting started in the music business. His music will live on forever...great performer, funny, talented......I had a chance to see him in a college doing Q and A with just a piano.......a night I'll never forget....Long LIve Billy!!!
Best Song on the Album: Goodnight Saigon
Runner-Up: Pressure
Personally I think "Surprise" is more Lennon than Harrison. Listen to the vocals.
I was reading all the lyrics he originally wrote for Allentown when I saw them in the video. I was like trying to put them into the song and they didn't fit right, haha. Glad he changed them.
cellini051 Yeah you're right, the rhythm is weird
AwesomeRobot15 yeah it wouldn't have worked. All part of the songwriting process though, haha.
"Sgt. Pepper" is great, but for me "Revolver" is better as an album. I think that the seeds of "Sgt. Pepper" were planted on "Revolver". What made "Sgt. Pepper" work was the album cover, the concept album feel of it or the perception that it was and coming out during the "Summer of Love" in 1967. But if you strip back all of that, it's the next Beatles album after "Revolver". And I think that "Revolver" is far superior and the best Beatles album. But that's just me. :)
You kind of hit the nail on the head there. Sgt Pepper is more than just the album it was the entire musical, artistic and social zeitgeist of 1967. But Revolver lit the fuse that sent the whole thing off. Listen to "Tomorrow Never Knows" and tell me if that fits into 1966...I think not.
Cool Bill. I agree.
❤
I never saw the cover as a paperback book as he mentions here. I met him late one night on an empty street in upper east side Manhattan, he was with a woman. We said hello and asked him how his thumb was, and asked when his new album was coming out. I believe it was this one. He had a really red tan from being out in the sun. I don't think he remembers meeting me lol.
I always thought of the nylon curtain as his 'sgt, pepper's'. it feels so much like a beatles album. i think along with the stranger it is his best. 'that is the gayest video.' lmao.
“Expos Top Punchless Mets” New York Times on back cover a nice touch!
Great LP. One of his best. Love to get a 30th Anniversary version this year!
Pity Bieber is peeping over his shoulder. Bieber sucks, get rid of him!
Billy Joel’s own Pet Sounds
I live in allentown.
Bill be careful your gonna upset Elton John with this 🤣
I am not a Billy Joel fan, but I am a fan of "The Nylon Curtain" - one of the first digital recordings in pop & a testament to what an album should be. Ironically though, I prefer the original vinyl pressing than a digital copy. Listening to my vinyl, now.
Can I ask why you’re not a Billy Joel fan? He has like thirty awesome singles. More than any other artist.
@@RussellGreerOfficial I don't go by statistics. It's like looking at a painting - you either like it or you don't.
Funny how most people who remember the 80s think it’s the best time of their lives.
*Holy crap! Billy has an awesome sense of humor, doesn't he? He mentions how 'gay' the Allentown music video is. He said the following about it (although I AM quoting him, note that I DID paraphrase part of his comments):*
_"Allentown is a great song... but the music video is quite gay. I re-watched it years later & only then did I finally realize just how much of a gay music video we actually made. I say this because there are quite lot of naked men in a shower scene. As I'm watching it, I realized it's quite a gay video."_
*LMAO! 😮😂👍🏼*
When he's talking about how the video is gay, is he talking about "Allentown" or "Goodnight Saigon?" Both of those videos have a lot of naked guys.
Allentown because of the dancing too.
Its 3/4s a great record and then it falls apart a bit near the end, gets too Beatley. It's not quite cohesive, but its ambitiousness is incredible and the highs are possibly his highest. I never realized how great Goodnight Saigon was until I heard it in that tribute video done by, I want to say, Garth Brooks? Allentown has always been an obsession, fabulous song... 'The Stranger' is the most cohesive start to finish. Nothing on it really seems unnecessary.
Does anyone know why he called it The Nylon Curtain?
It was a play on words around the Iron Curtain that divided East and West at the time but when all is said and done, it's just people behind either side who are not that different and so the nylon part was meant to symbolise the flimsiness and transparency of what kept either side apart.
And then a few years after this album, Billy toured Russia.
WHY was this box set ABORTED?!?!
THIS is the kind of thing I would spend actual hard-earned money on.
NOT "Well, we'll give the permission to let you download just one damn digital file if you pay us $1,000!" crap. FUNK 'DAT.
The box set is available. Check Amazon or Joels website.
The Complete Albums Collection CD boxset was advertised as a limited edition upon its release in 2011. It sold out pretty quickly and if even if a used one turns up on eBay it goes for 100’s $$.
I think this is his best sounding album. (Not necessarily his best overall, but pretty great anyway)
@LABCall Pretty much every comparison you made here was right on target except for your interpretation of "Where's the Orchestra?" ...This song is actually, imo right along with "Laura", one of the best tunes on the album. "Token Ringo vocal"??? are you kidding me? First of all, there ISN'T a "token Ringo vocal" anywhere on the album. Secondly, that assessment, imo, is not correct. If anything, that song is all Paul inspired. It's a gorgeous marriage of melody and lyrics.
Not his best album by any measure, but certainly ambitious, interesting, and strong work.
No question about the Beatles influence although I disagree completely with your examples! "Where's The Orchestra" doesn't sound anything like Ringo!! In fact it's the most obvious McCartney tribute on the whole album, and also the most sophisticated chord-wise.Totally opposite any Ringo-vocal type song. "Surprises" is not as much George as it's John, "Goodnight Saigon" is a mix of Paul and John. The most obvious John songs would be "Scandinavian Skies" and "Laura".
I laughed when he said, "That was the gayest video."
Laura in the sky with diamonds!
"Man, that's a gay video" 🤣😂 I love you Billy! (not in a gay way)
It's maybe because the recording process was so exhausting, the Nylon Curtain has got some classic tracks on it but they are all on side one. Side two is far less memorable. Albums like The Stranger, Glass Houses, 52nd Street and An Innocent Man are great all the way through.
No. Scandinavian skies is nothing short of fantastic
lol
Your ..
you know what's gay?
where's the rest of the videos to all the other albums?
It was a controversially contradicting
“That’s the GAYEST video.” You said it best, Billy 🥰🏳️🌈
This is a very good album but not my favorite
billy Joel, always a bonfire leftist
His Beatles rip-off.
John Vargo, if he gives credit where it’s due, is it really a rip off?
The Beatles is overrated 🥱
Everything after 1965 is a Beatles ripoff.
Not a rip-off it's actually his Sergeant Pepper.
Unabashed beatlefan he is he crafted exactly what he wanted in the vein of Sergeant pepper it's an absolutely fantastic album
