      That reminds me about the time my island became extremely bankrupt after my reckless spending and I had to put it in Marshall Law and live off of foreign aid which at most put me $1,000 above zero. I think eventually a military coupe began and the palace was destroyed.

    Let's be real here. If the country had over a billion dollars at one point, the $5 million musical was just a drop in the ocean of bad decisions and is hardly the thing to blame for their current situation or indeed the title of this video.

    They are also rising in weight seeing that Nauru has the highest rate of obesity in the world (and by that I mean that basically every single person is obese). I know it sounds odd, but the reason for this is because Nauru imports their food from Australia who agreed to import enough food to feed the population if they allowed them to put a prison there (basically meaning that Australia did to Nauru what the U.K. did to Australia). However, all the the food they import is canned food and has a very high salt and fat concentration causing it to be incredibly unhealthy for the residents.

  • @zxvadcsfbh
    @zxvadcsfbh 6 лет назад +781

    FYI Nauru is now mostly used by Australia to hold refugees that arrive without visas.
    It's our highly ethically dubious prison and is essentially an Australian vassal state that has imported our culture, economic influence, and provides us with cheaply available land in a foreign country where we can do things of a probably illegal nature and control (read: cut off) almost any media access.

  • @TheRoarbit

    Also very sad to consider that another major portion of Nauru's economy will soon get even worse as a large amount of their money comes from Australia giving them aid as an offshore place to sort through illegal immigrants to Australia. If you even look at a map of the island at the moment, such a huge portion is dedicated to these refugees, it's hard to imagine anything prosperous occurring from the aforementioned infrastructure when Australia inevitably comes up with a better, more long term solution to refugee processing.

    • @zxvadcsfbh
      @zxvadcsfbh 6 лет назад +7

      It's going to take a while. The resettlement efforts aren't going well and with Manus completely fucked, the NRPC is all we have. I'd expect the detainee population to increase in the short term. I mean the Lib/Nat col hates the idea of increasing numbers in onshore facilities like Villawood. If we get a Labour gov next fed election, I'd expect that to change. But for the current short-term climate I don't see Nauru shutting down just yet.

    • @TheRoarbit
      @TheRoarbit 6 лет назад +4

      I could not agree more, the current situation with Manus Island/Nauru is the biggest shitfest, with no short term solution in sight. What I was implying by the above comment was that relying on Australia for offshore processing is not a long term solution for Nauru's economy.

    • @alexjago51
      @alexjago51 6 лет назад +25

      ruam:
      1. most of our land is desert or extremely marginal
      2. being seen as weak on border control is a vote loser for both major parties here
      3. some of (2) is a racism thing
      4. ... but the sea crossing from Indonesia is actually really dangerous, so shutting that down gives a moral veneer.
      5. we do take refugees, just not ones that come by boat.

    • @zxvadcsfbh
      @zxvadcsfbh 6 лет назад +10

      Long story short: Politics.
      Longerish story: Money, politics, protectionism, mostly incorrect paranoia. The core reason is that while we do have a lot of land, most of it is uninhabited. Pretty much a good two-thirds of the entire country is damn near impossible to inhabit long term and of the remainder there's really nothing built outside of the coastlines and the occasional river. I think the last time I checked the ABS stats we have 87% of our population living in about 15% of our total landmass.
      While we could just move most refugees out to the tiny rural towns and say 'have fun', we don't. These people need the help and resources of our urban centers, so we put them there. However, this costs lots of tax money because these people are refugees and thus wards of the state. Meaning the state provides food, shelter, helps them assimilate, and generally gives them access to the same education and healthcare services that citizens get. You can see where this gets political the moment you mention the word 'budget'.
      Thus the two major political parties use refugees as a football to kick around for points and nothing really gets done. Offshore processing is designed to stem what happened when we last got looser with our laws (but pre dates this event by far but I'm not giving a full history lesson), which resulted in a surge where a number equating almost 20-30% of our entire yearly refugee intake suddenly arrived via dangerous boat voyages within a 9 month period. Since keeping more people in the horrible offshore prisons and establishing a pseudo-military border protection force about 3-4 years ago, well, we don't have anything close to the number of people seeking asylum via that method.
      Whether it was a good move or not, I can't say. I don't think we should be running offshore camps, however I don't want to see that many people drowning at sea anymore. My dad works in the national SAR co ordination centre and directly organises search and rescue. They were seeing about 20 people die every month attempting these crossings and it was eating at them. But as I said, the camps and our overall approach now is bad. Condemned by the UN as illegal bad.

    • @zxvadcsfbh
      @zxvadcsfbh 6 лет назад

      I should note that in the third paragraph I mean AN ADDITIONAL 20-30%. Not 20-30% of the existing intake.

    Nauru's skyscraper in Melbourne, Nauru House, didn't do much better. When the concrete facade started falling off (it was being called "concrete cancer" at the time) they reclad the building in aluminium. It was a time consuming and expensive process, ensuring that venture was not profitable for Nauru.

      Ashley McCallum due to Nauru's finances, they use the Australian dollar, rely on Australian aid, and the Australian defence force provides defence. Thus they are a essentially a client state of Australia, which uses the island to imprison refugees in inhumane conditions (it is a crime for a doctor etc to report on what conditions are really like on Nauru, several refugees have died)

    • @stephenvoncrven4319
      @stephenvoncrven4319 6 лет назад +1

      Reilly Walker which is called being normally educated and have a little common sense. if you need a course on that you might aswell need a course on "here's how to drink things without a straw".
      all this new "sensitive" shit is just a massive dump for people.being skilled at nothing, we already have words and behaviours for this.
      if i encounter a foreigner i perfectly know that maybe he is used to something i ignore, or some.gestures or acts or whatever have different meanings, nonetheless i can't study all the cultures of the world only to be polite; so what to do? communication and.common sense, i go for what i consider polite, he says me it's not, i apologize and i stop doing that. TA DAH!
      if you continue to do that on purpose (to cause annoiance) you are and asshole.
      if you continue to repeat that because you don't get it, you are uneducated.
      see? we already have s system and words to be "culturally sensitive".
      do you want to be even more "sensible" and anticipate the other person by being ALREADY accustomed to what they see fit? ooooh nice, i live in a tiny ass country and we have cultural differences from north, center and south. even regional differences between northern and southern areas.
      we have different behaviours and even very tiny differences in how to treat friends, and it's a miniscule country which counts nothing.
      good look with the entire world

    • @reillywalker195
      @reillywalker195 5 лет назад +1

      stephen von crven It's common sense to you but not to everyone. There are a lot of people who engage in behaviours they don't even realize are offensive, and cultural sensitivity courses are meant to bring attention to that. Here in Canada, many examples of where cultural sensitivity education is relevant relate to indigenous peoples-entire nations within Canada that have been subjugated for over 150 years and have only recently had success in achieving the sovereignty recognition promised to them by the British in 1763. There is a lot of subconscious racism in Canada that many Canadians don't even realize is racist toward indigenous people, let alone that it's harmful beyond causing offence.

      We're living in a globalised world. In a company operating around the globe, it might be a useful idea to know how to deal with various cultures, both as business partners and as employees. That is important even for a surprising number of medium to small(ish) businesses, not only large conglomerates.
      Apparently, it's also useful as a way to trigger the "muh feels are hurt by mentioning other peeplz" crowd.

    • @djphlange

      @spider5600 6 лет назад +3

      They are not a bad idea in principle, even if the basic idea could be instilled in one sentence. 'Don't be a dick'
      But the only times I hear when people go on those courses is usually when they have done something racist the week before. If I was an employer looking for employees and someone has done a Cultural diversity seminar. Instead of thinking 'Ah that's nice they have done some diversity training' I would be thinking. 'Oh shit. what did they do that means they needed to attend a Cultural Diversity seminar.
      Its kind of like how advice to tourists in foreign countries is to wear your rucksack with the opening infront of you so your valuables more secure. Not a bad idea in theory but the only people who do that are tourists so you cant even try to blend in by looking bored and carrying a rucksack like a normal person. You might as well scream "Please rob me I don't know where Iam" to prospective muggers

    • @djphlange
      @djphlange 6 лет назад +3

      spider5600 well yeah basically these courses are teaching things that to me is beyond commonsense that the thought of having to sit down and listen to someone basically say "dont be a dick" and "be considerate" is a waste of my time. Ive been doing that since like grade 1-2.
      If others feel they need to sit down and be told those things, go for it, but count me out. To me thats like holding a course on not touching hot stove tops, I get it
