The history of Nauru sounds like a failed island in a Tropico game
Suspiciously, lots of Nauru’s gdp was being sent to the private Swiss bank account of one “El Presidente”
"Remember a game where you instantly bankrupted after the independence"
That reminds me about the time my island became extremely bankrupt after my reckless spending and I had to put it in Marshall Law and live off of foreign aid which at most put me $1,000 above zero. I think eventually a military coupe began and the palace was destroyed.
I won the Tropico game several times. I could be the best President of Nauru.
fun fact: Nauru in finnish translates to "a laugh" which describes the island very well
Let's be real here. If the country had over a billion dollars at one point, the $5 million musical was just a drop in the ocean of bad decisions and is hardly the thing to blame for their current situation or indeed the title of this video.
Prasad Naik eg the finance minister bought a Lamborghini that he was too fat to fit in, so he just let it rust away.
The mining income dried up and the hotels went under. They basically pulled a Donald Trump, only they didn't have great lawyers to license out their name as part of a bankruptcy settlement.
True, the musical wasn't by itself the one thing that bankrupted the company. But it still stands as a good example of one of many failed and ill thought out investments. It's not like any of the others served them well either.
But it's reckless spending like this that add up.
The people in Nauru are no different than people who win the lottery and blow it all. If the same people were given a second chance with the money, they would wind up the same way by blowing it all again. You can't save people from themselves.
Nauru is laughter in Finnish. Ironic
They did laugh...but just not for that long
LagiNaLangAko23 Lol...i just realized you made the some comment 3 days ago
Coincidence? I think not.
@Al gebra Nauraa not naura. Naura could be used in context of commanding someone to laugh. NAURA! OR ELSE!
Nauru gives an image of a happy, even funny place. Then there's "Korea" which in Finnish means extravagant. In a way both of them are in some things!
Though I think with thousands of languages in the world these things are certainly bound to happen.
*_Half as interesting, twice the jokes_*
DKS Films Ay
More like 10 times the jokes
Neel Parmar and i’m here for it
LMAO TRUE
This ain't some joke! Western people abusing the trust of and colonizing the brown Asian Pacific Islander people while they embezzle and gain! Just like the Western people did to Native Americans, the Western people tricked them and stole their stuff!
"They used to be swimming in cash. Now they're just swimming." 😂😂
i died right there 🤣
And so did the Nauruan people.
Or at least they will...
I'm sure Nauru will rise again. That finished me
Big oof.
r not, considering how obese they are
Nauru was the name of my ex's cat. She too made questionable musicals at 3 o'clock in the morning
Man from Nantucket 😂😂😂😂😂
👏🤲👏🤲👏🤲👏🤲👏
Her cat, or your ex?
Orionphist both lol

Hey guys! If you liked this video make sure to have a good, long think about your taste in channels!
Already second guessing why I liked and subscribed. If anything, Nauru should have gone the Wendover model and invested on planes (oh wait, they did).
Make a video about yourself and call it "A centillionth as interesting"
I subscribed on your channel because you have good ideas for vids.Donts forget your voice so perfect, like you have been destined for this channel.
Thanks to your videos i start to learning sooo many things, and i feel more clever, grettings from Colombia.
Definitely one of the best channels on RUclips!
Airplanes confirmed at 1:44
D Snodgrass WTF? I didn't get it
yankiel pestano
Wendover has a well-known fascination with airplanes.
Mirza Ahmed oh
Now I still don't get it
When you live in a dirt poor island country that's so isolated that you're doomed to stay here as the waters around you are rising.
Life really sucks.
+00CD tech
they used to have the highest gdp, but i assume they have terrible gdp now
but i assume that they can always get off the island with nauru airlines
You are underestimating the chronic stupidity (born of generations of inbreeding) of the Nauruvian people. Also, they are dirt poor but they are the most obese people in the world (fact). Amazing.
Shane Wright
Small island nations have really shitty diets since they can't grow any food, they can only eat packaged foods shipped from across the world. Imagine if spam was the only meat you could eat... and say goodbye to fresh fruits and vegetables.
I absolutely agree. So how did they live before they got access to Spam? The ufished - an activity that burns calories in order to produce food, Why dont they fish anymore?
But at least their flag is cool 🇳🇷
Rip Nauru and yes I have seen every episode of hai
who hasnt right?
you seen every episode of How an Island

*Oh well, no point cleaning the car window*
They are also rising in weight seeing that Nauru has the highest rate of obesity in the world (and by that I mean that basically every single person is obese). I know it sounds odd, but the reason for this is because Nauru imports their food from Australia who agreed to import enough food to feed the population if they allowed them to put a prison there (basically meaning that Australia did to Nauru what the U.K. did to Australia). However, all the the food they import is canned food and has a very high salt and fat concentration causing it to be incredibly unhealthy for the residents.
FYI Nauru is now mostly used by Australia to hold refugees that arrive without visas.
It's our highly ethically dubious prison and is essentially an Australian vassal state that has imported our culture, economic influence, and provides us with cheaply available land in a foreign country where we can do things of a probably illegal nature and control (read: cut off) almost any media access.
Genius! Maybe EU should take notes.
They did... theirs was called: Australia
Luminescent Lion so I guess GB is the EU now
This is a bit of an absurd situation with the whole "vassal state" thing but I wonder, would the population of Nauru want to be annexed into Australia if things get worse, or if things get REALLY bad and most of the inhabitable portion of the island sinks, would the population be transported to Australia?
Close enough for me lol
Ah, what terrible puns am I in for today?
Jacob Hannan the island had *TONS* of bird boob
D E S P A C I D O S, the one you commented?
Perhaps
After he gave the example of United Airlines' seat occupancy being higher than Air Nauru, he said that Air Nauru actually had to drag people on to the plane. A pun to the video where a person was dragged of a United plane after being overbooked.
They NauRuined their country
Wow Nauru is 3.5 miles tall I didn't realise it had such a massive mountain on it
Measured from the bottom of the sea it might not be far off.

2:38 - Oh hey, it's the Pacific Star building. I work just up the street from there. It's an office building these days. The plaque at the entrance mentions how it's owned by Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust.
Girder3 It was one of the most modern buildings when it was new.
I feel bad for the people and these 5 mins were practically all of Nauru's history
I have indeed watched every video that you have ever made. Subscriber for life.

Also very sad to consider that another major portion of Nauru's economy will soon get even worse as a large amount of their money comes from Australia giving them aid as an offshore place to sort through illegal immigrants to Australia. If you even look at a map of the island at the moment, such a huge portion is dedicated to these refugees, it's hard to imagine anything prosperous occurring from the aforementioned infrastructure when Australia inevitably comes up with a better, more long term solution to refugee processing.
It's going to take a while. The resettlement efforts aren't going well and with Manus completely fucked, the NRPC is all we have. I'd expect the detainee population to increase in the short term. I mean the Lib/Nat col hates the idea of increasing numbers in onshore facilities like Villawood. If we get a Labour gov next fed election, I'd expect that to change. But for the current short-term climate I don't see Nauru shutting down just yet.
I could not agree more, the current situation with Manus Island/Nauru is the biggest shitfest, with no short term solution in sight. What I was implying by the above comment was that relying on Australia for offshore processing is not a long term solution for Nauru's economy.
ruam:
1. most of our land is desert or extremely marginal
2. being seen as weak on border control is a vote loser for both major parties here
3. some of (2) is a racism thing
4. ... but the sea crossing from Indonesia is actually really dangerous, so shutting that down gives a moral veneer.
5. we do take refugees, just not ones that come by boat.
Long story short: Politics.
Longerish story: Money, politics, protectionism, mostly incorrect paranoia. The core reason is that while we do have a lot of land, most of it is uninhabited. Pretty much a good two-thirds of the entire country is damn near impossible to inhabit long term and of the remainder there's really nothing built outside of the coastlines and the occasional river. I think the last time I checked the ABS stats we have 87% of our population living in about 15% of our total landmass.
While we could just move most refugees out to the tiny rural towns and say 'have fun', we don't. These people need the help and resources of our urban centers, so we put them there. However, this costs lots of tax money because these people are refugees and thus wards of the state. Meaning the state provides food, shelter, helps them assimilate, and generally gives them access to the same education and healthcare services that citizens get. You can see where this gets political the moment you mention the word 'budget'.
Thus the two major political parties use refugees as a football to kick around for points and nothing really gets done. Offshore processing is designed to stem what happened when we last got looser with our laws (but pre dates this event by far but I'm not giving a full history lesson), which resulted in a surge where a number equating almost 20-30% of our entire yearly refugee intake suddenly arrived via dangerous boat voyages within a 9 month period. Since keeping more people in the horrible offshore prisons and establishing a pseudo-military border protection force about 3-4 years ago, well, we don't have anything close to the number of people seeking asylum via that method.
Whether it was a good move or not, I can't say. I don't think we should be running offshore camps, however I don't want to see that many people drowning at sea anymore. My dad works in the national SAR co ordination centre and directly organises search and rescue. They were seeing about 20 people die every month attempting these crossings and it was eating at them. But as I said, the camps and our overall approach now is bad. Condemned by the UN as illegal bad.
I should note that in the third paragraph I mean AN ADDITIONAL 20-30%. Not 20-30% of the existing intake.
3:49 "They were out of phosphate and they hit rock bottom." Literally! LITERALLY literally!
I wanted to know the full length of the shore line, then i remembered it is impossible to calculate

When he jokes about totally watching every single HAI video but you have actually watched every single HAI video
oh great, the video starts immediately starts with bullying my city ;_;
meme guy, meme guy, meme guy. If it was such a back water farming town, would it hold one of the biggest runways in the region or have one of the navy's most important inland bases?
Edit: also the schools are great. :)
(I would know. i go to one of them)
Dio Brando, i could be too.... ;)
A good troll would never even entertain the possibility of themselves trolling.
KingKip It's okay, Crossville isn't much better. :D
I would believe that the closure of the Naval Air Station and training center there must have impacted Millington, AND Memphis as well. The NATTC trained the majority of new Navy and Marines after Basic to fill the various jobs required by the services. There was a small NATTC division in Jacksonville, FL Jacksonville also had many regular Navy air squadrons and a rework facility for all navy and Marine aircraft. I think JAX is still in operation.
4:38
Ah. The old "but you know what's not insensitive" switcheroo.
I think it was very insensitive for them to make an issue of my lack of sensitivity.
I swear all the random locations he chooses means something.
They should've just made the island into a tourist destination
This... would be simple but effective.
Yeah! Let's get on an 11 hour flight to look at limestone pillars!

@@DanCooper404 that’s crazy, I made the comment 3 years ago, but here we are. 300 million dollars they would had
Holy shit! That AON building in Melbourne, my dad was the engineer for that project.
at this point i feel like i'm subscribing to see the transitions to the sponsors
Nauru: *goes under water*
Citizens: looks like I'm going for a swim
Nauru should've taken those Skillshare classes I guess.
the building pictured when he mentioned honolulu (2:51) is literally called nauru tower. I didn't think i'd ever learn why it was called that...
I feel like I leave this comment each video, but your sponsor transitions are literally the best ever. Truly a masterpiece
I wish my government would invest millions of dollars into a horrifically bad musical
I gbuess they weren't spiritual lyrical miracle individuals
Your comments are not funny.
TheDotGamer GD i know
oh hey MASTER COMMENTER
Seeing you with 7 likes is scary...
I gbuess there is a typo in your comment
I was really expecting that "Nauru is inexperienced" bit to lead into the Skillshare sponsorship.
I absolutely love your transitions to the ads
United drag people off their plane while Air Nauru drag people onto their plane... Hmmm.....
I've come to feel like every new video of HAI is like having a small amount of fun stored somewhere that you decide to cash in at leisure.
That mention of Millington caught me off guard cause I live right next to there in Arlington lol
Nauru's skyscraper in Melbourne, Nauru House, didn't do much better. When the concrete facade started falling off (it was being called "concrete cancer" at the time) they reclad the building in aluminium. It was a time consuming and expensive process, ensuring that venture was not profitable for Nauru.
your damn puns... your sense of humor.. up to point and damn ridiclous
1:20 How is the island suppose to be 3.5 tall, like that would make it unbreathable!
Just when you thought you already know about every curiosity in this world a new HAI video comes out
The ad transitions are gold!
Skillshare’s “Cultural Diversity Sensitivity Training”... LOL!
You left the best joke right for the end! 😉🤣
Cringe
Fun fact: the Finnish word "nauru" means laughter.
Let's all laugh at Nauru.
I too am a viewer of ALL the videos of HAI and WP... Came for the interesting stories and I stayed for all those marvelous segways to the advertisers. I tip my hat to you, dear Sir! Keep up the good work!

XD they didnt base there economy on it that was the only resource they had its not like they could have said lets start farming with our 3rd smallest country in the world and ship it hundreds of miles to try and compete with farms larger then our contry that are right next to where they are selling
Really shows you how mining all the natural resources off of a place can be a short sighted decision

4:46 the number of so-called HR professionals that need to learn that is really low too because they only exist to protect the company, not the workers
Always fascinated by how he connect his last word to a video lesson from the sponsors!
Justin Y. is already here
Australia use it as a prison now
Midnight Runner Detention Centre* not a prison.
Nauru is Australia's Australia.
Probably the individual knows something that you didn't knew, like that Australia started as a "prison colony" for those with crime offences in the UK. What goes around, comes around...
Midnight Runner Kinda ironic considering how Australia started
Bud Charles Yeah i know lol bloody convicts
The ending was pure gold.
love you humor dude keep it going, amazing vids
I really want to see Duke sales pitch for the Musical

Must. Have. More. Brick Facts!!!
Your ending jokes gets better overtime
At least Nauru..
*has the HAI GROUND.*
Why didn't you mention the nauru refugee detention centre pretty messed up stuff that's worth discussing?
Because that is not how they lost their fortune. Seems pretty clear to me.
Irrelevant to the topic of the video.
a cultural diversity seminar....sounds like a college theses day
"They used to be swimming in money, now they are just swimming"
This line was more scathering/ruthless/"insensitive"/dark humorous rather than "good ending" line
Damn I love your transitions at the end of the videos. Now I'm waiting for it.
oi chris ramsay music this one, actually its probably not his i but i just notice straight away what is the song anyway

sensitivity training? are you serious? smh
"Let's all try to be a little nice to each other" Random RUclips commenter: "HOW DARE YOU"
Another white male's ego got threatened. Guys, come have a look! We found someone who is opposed to being nice and sensitive to others.
That building shown before Sheraton is THE PACIFIC STAR BUILDING at Buendia Avenue, Makati City, Philippines. We always called it the Nauru Building.
They really fucked up their land. I remember my uncle talked to me about this and said they will run out of their resources and will end up poor and with no viable land... he was right
"Trainers course that teaches you how to conduct a Cultural Diversity Sensitivity seminar."
Well, that seems completely useless course 🤔
I AM AN SJW. I NEED CULTURAL DIVERSITY. SO I SIGN UP TO SKILLSHARE. VERY HAPPY. NOW HAVE ISLAMIC DAD.
To quote future grammar nazis:

*_*I_*_ now have _*_an_*_ Islamic dad._
I believe the expectation when you see an all caps comment is that it will be of the poorest grammar.
The grammar can still get poorer:
_MY ARE THE SJW. ME NEEDS CULTURE DIVERSE. SO MYSELF SIGNINGED UP TO SKILLSHARES. VERY HAPPYS. NOW HAVES ISLAMIC DAD._
isnt that a city in pakistan?

4:28 That was just unnecessary. Naurubians got abs *wrecked* here
China to the rescue!
Oh, the irony. I can imagine it now: China claiming to be saving Nauru by adding to their coast, while actually just surrounding them with unusable sand to block their ports.
Eouz Cuemarz not really they will do what the Americans did, build a wa... militaric base for potential resources
No. Russia!
Nice video but that stillshare promotion had the opposite effect... Cultural diversity training... No thanks
"they used to be swimming in cash, now they're just swimming" this is sad but I'm laughing out loud 😂😂😂
They should make a musical about Nauru and its fall from boom town to tint Island.
Someone actually is!
Irresponsible to not mention the horrific things the Australia government is doing on Nauru.
It's not the first time a western nation has taken advantage of an island nation that shot itself in the foot. And it's still better off for the West's intervention.
roger dicks it’s better than outsourcing your immigration policy to people smugglers in Indonesia and having boat people drown at sea.
What 'horrific' things are the Australian government doing on Nauru?
Ashley McCallum due to Nauru's finances, they use the Australian dollar, rely on Australian aid, and the Australian defence force provides defence. Thus they are a essentially a client state of Australia, which uses the island to imprison refugees in inhumane conditions (it is a crime for a doctor etc to report on what conditions are really like on Nauru, several refugees have died)
Veritas Nox All that foreign aid and general propping up of a failed state sounds horrific.
The detainees on Nauru are free to go home at any time.
ie you are full of shit.
This comment section needs some cultural sensitivity training. Like jeez why does the idea of other cultures bother you so much?
That isn't what "cultural sensitivity" training or any of the plethora of neo-Marxist propaganda courses made mandatory these days actually teach.
T. H. Caro Because they are racist. Didn`t you know that nazis took suicide pills rather than spending some time correcting themselves?
You didn't talk about modern Nauru and the Australian detention centres on there, thats like a whole half an hours worth of content right there
Shout out from Millington TN!
cultural diversity sensitivity course.
seriously?
The fact you're asking that rhetorical question means you could really use that course. I took one. It really wasn't bad. It wasn't an "indoctrination" of any kind but rather a discussion on how to address people, particularly marginalized people, whose cultures and worldviews are different from one's own.
Reilly Walker which is called being normally educated and have a little common sense. if you need a course on that you might aswell need a course on "here's how to drink things without a straw".
all this new "sensitive" shit is just a massive dump for people.being skilled at nothing, we already have words and behaviours for this.
if i encounter a foreigner i perfectly know that maybe he is used to something i ignore, or some.gestures or acts or whatever have different meanings, nonetheless i can't study all the cultures of the world only to be polite; so what to do? communication and.common sense, i go for what i consider polite, he says me it's not, i apologize and i stop doing that. TA DAH!
if you continue to do that on purpose (to cause annoiance) you are and asshole.
if you continue to repeat that because you don't get it, you are uneducated.
see? we already have s system and words to be "culturally sensitive".
do you want to be even more "sensible" and anticipate the other person by being ALREADY accustomed to what they see fit? ooooh nice, i live in a tiny ass country and we have cultural differences from north, center and south. even regional differences between northern and southern areas.
we have different behaviours and even very tiny differences in how to treat friends, and it's a miniscule country which counts nothing.
good look with the entire world
stephen von crven It's common sense to you but not to everyone. There are a lot of people who engage in behaviours they don't even realize are offensive, and cultural sensitivity courses are meant to bring attention to that. Here in Canada, many examples of where cultural sensitivity education is relevant relate to indigenous peoples-entire nations within Canada that have been subjugated for over 150 years and have only recently had success in achieving the sovereignty recognition promised to them by the British in 1763. There is a lot of subconscious racism in Canada that many Canadians don't even realize is racist toward indigenous people, let alone that it's harmful beyond causing offence.
a cultural diversity seminar??? ........ mmmmmmmm no thanks
What does it even mean? Are you giving a seminar on how to be more culturally diverse? How to be more tolerant? Just vaguely educational on the topic of culture? I'm so confused.
We're living in a globalised world. In a company operating around the globe, it might be a useful idea to know how to deal with various cultures, both as business partners and as employees. That is important even for a surprising number of medium to small(ish) businesses, not only large conglomerates.
Apparently, it's also useful as a way to trigger the "muh feels are hurt by mentioning other peeplz" crowd.
Santiago Bron why would I need a diversity seminar? Its complete identity politics, I could care less what race or creed you are
They are not a bad idea in principle, even if the basic idea could be instilled in one sentence. 'Don't be a dick'
But the only times I hear when people go on those courses is usually when they have done something racist the week before. If I was an employer looking for employees and someone has done a Cultural diversity seminar. Instead of thinking 'Ah that's nice they have done some diversity training' I would be thinking. 'Oh shit. what did they do that means they needed to attend a Cultural Diversity seminar.
Its kind of like how advice to tourists in foreign countries is to wear your rucksack with the opening infront of you so your valuables more secure. Not a bad idea in theory but the only people who do that are tourists so you cant even try to blend in by looking bored and carrying a rucksack like a normal person. You might as well scream "Please rob me I don't know where Iam" to prospective muggers
spider5600 well yeah basically these courses are teaching things that to me is beyond commonsense that the thought of having to sit down and listen to someone basically say "dont be a dick" and "be considerate" is a waste of my time. Ive been doing that since like grade 1-2.
If others feel they need to sit down and be told those things, go for it, but count me out. To me thats like holding a course on not touching hot stove tops, I get it
I have watched every single video you guys made. And proud. Your tone of voice is subliminal.
fun fact there used to be a refugee camp in Nauru. but they called it a detention centre
