- Ocean Imaging took Swellpro's latest drone, the Splash Drone 3 to Greenland, to put this drone to the ultimate test.
“We really wanted this drone to be a success story because it promised everything we wanted in a drone. Stable 4K filming and waterproof"
While the thought of a waterproof does sound very appealing, this product really performed poorly. While being waterproof is a great feature, it’s completely undermined by inconsistent performance and poor image quality.
Thanks for making this video. The longest distance between my house and water is about 150 meters. I fly my old modded quad over water regularly, but only because it's so dated and limited that I've accepted that I may lose it on any flight. I keep checking swell pro with each model, and I had high hopes for the camera. This review reaffirms that building a waterproof UAV is the only way to go at this stage.
Cheers!
THANK YOU SOO MUCh
This is the 1st Honest review of this product. i cant find a real review on the SPRY by swellpro either!!
now i see so many BAD REASONS not to use this for SEARCH AND RESCUE!!
you can also pull the Antennas out of the unit and mount them on the outside and get better antennas for the controller. but thank you
Do not buy swellpro they are scammers!!!!
Thank you so much this really helped to show the flaws!
you just saved me over $2k, thank you!!
Thank you,,Good honest review...well done.
Thanks for an honest review
I have the SPRY waterproof model. This is smaller and less expensive but seems to solve most of the problems you mention.
1. The gimbal is protected inside a dome hence no mechanical problems
2. The latest firmware(feb 2019) gives stable flight and good response. Return to home/radio works well
3. You can switch it on and off without opening the cover.
4. Electronic camera stabilization is good, not perfect but good enough for hobby use.
Cons:
1. Battery alarm starts at 11 mins flight in cold weather.
2. No option to use 3 party batteries.
3. Water droplets after submerging the camera but that is not swellpros fault and can be solved by a bit of hydrophobic fluid from eBay.
You can see video of it on my channel.
Thank you for this video. Well explained and demonstrated. Had high hopes after version 3 appeared, as many of our research work is on sea. Currently using P4Ps which have excellent performance. Other waterproof UAVs you would recommend?
You're welcome. Thanks for watching. Unfortunately there is nothing reliable enough to recommend in this area. Still a niche that is yet to be filled. Apparently Swellpro are working on a new design but in the meantime perhaps DJI will come out with something waterproof!
Dex Waterproof frames work perfectly. Gimbal and camera still require creativity on the part of the builder, but the UAV's are rock solid.
Hi, Just came across you video on RUclips. Only real world assessment of this drone drone product I have seen so far.Thank you. Do you have any plans to test out the Splash Drone 4?
Thanks! We were sent the 3+ but ended up not wasting any more time with this product. Curious how others go with the 4.
so what drone would your recommend for a sailing coach??
Thanks for the heads up. Won’t be buying this product. A lot money to waste. 🤙🏼
I just purchased a Splash Drone 3, and no problems with flying it so far. I just successfully launched and landed from my dinghy. My major complaint though is with the camera (I have the black camera). Photos are cell phone quality--I will try a lower resolution, maybe that will help. But so far the images are disappointing.
I bought one, too. And these are also all of my sentiments and complaints. Have you actually opened it up? That is when you realize that there is a new standard for poor quality with a big price tag; sticky foam pads and velcro to secure the motor ESCs and transmitters/receivers! What!?! Oh, and a battery insertion method that will surely break something. The breathable membrane (to allow for accurate barometric pressure readings for steady altitude hold) is in no way waterproof, and could have EASILY been solved by SwellPro (there are waterproof baro sensors out there). Cheap written all over these things once you actually have them in hand.
Like you said, it's safer to buy something like, say, a DJI product and fly it over the water than it is to use this thing.
Got agree with this review, I really have reservations about this drone... I have had issues with the aircraft auto landing during normal flight then as I have no control over the drone in the ground I cannot cut the motors which has caused the drone to flip over. Also camera issues when I power the drone up.... It will automatically place the highest white setting on the camera, So I have to log in via the WiFi network & change. WiFi network is bad, really bad, it continually drops out, you can never rewatch your footage directly on your WiFi device as it takes over an hour to buffer, not bad for a battery that only lasts 10 mins. Sweelpro’s customer service is awful they are reluctant to help out with anything. The only thing that is water proof is the drone, the controller and carry case is not, we got caught in a rain storm during a flight and everything got drenched and full of water.... For the money this things is not worth it... Spend your money elsewhere or what for an updated DJI that will be waterproof..... I don’t think it will be that far away....
Great points, we agree 100%
waterproof barometers? Please point me in the right direction. :-)
Have you addressed these issues with swellpro? Curious what they had to say.
i wanted it. to fly in the rain. but with a 8 min battery life. there is no point
what wlfi did you use ?
I think I’ll just put some floaties on my Karma 😎
Karma is a piece of shit too.
Loft54 is it true..I heard only 6 people own a Karma...you go bro🚮
Better off saying phantom
Quero um de presente! Envia para o meu endereço aqui no Brasil. Obrigado!
A review the way it should be done. Great job...crappy product...
Thanks Ozzy Guy
Should be rebranded as "CRAP DRONE"...might be more apt
Doesn't appear to have any good qualities! … It's off my list.
It's an engineering failure. Why sealing such complicated mechanics and electronics instead of putting the camera and gimbal into a plexiglas dome? Then you'd only have to seal the motor shafts and even there some improvements could be made to increase reliability drastically.
But seems that they've given up. No 4 was released until now.
It’s absolute garbage.
