John never dissed Ringo. that was a joke a one hit wonder British comedian made many years after Lennon passed. Lennon used ringo on his first solo album, he thought ringo was a brilliant drummer.
Apparently in order to reach that raunchy/raw/growly voice that you can hear on this track, McCartney would everyday start to sing his vocal parts to this song very early in the morning for a week. McCartney "When we were recording 'Oh! Darling' I came into the studios early every day for a week to sing it by myself because at first my voice was too clear. I wanted it to sound as though I'd been performing it on stage all week"
Always loved this song. Kind of an old style song with Beatles innovative approach. Those background vocals and those sparse guitar stabs. And of course Paul’s insane vocal. A deep cut gem.
Just a note to tell you that if The Beatles hadn't appeared as they did, maybe the music you like and do nowadays would never have existed... They changed everything: mentalities, music, way of life, etc... They really changed the world! So did the invention of mini skirts by Mary Quant... but maybe The Beatles also gave to that as well!
That John quote about Ringo was never from John. It was from a comedy sketch from an English comedian and somehow it was attributed to John. He never said that. John loved Ringo as the band's drummer.
I was 13 years old when I first heard this record, and this was a stand out track for me. So raw, simple, and yet complicated. Great fun as always to watch the two of you in these vids...
Hi guys! :) Nice fireworks there, Sifa! What a great track this was... have not heard this since the 70s... forgot all about it - it was indeed beautiful :)
In addition to all the things you mentioned, which was great, and I'm glad you shouted out that bass guitar line, it's just so perfect and so cool the little smears that he does and it's so thick and heavy. And don't forget the piano just always there as a texture and I also really love what Ringo was doing on the hi-hat here. Sometimes just listen to the song and try to focus on only that. It's not predictable when he does that little pattern but it's perfect for the music. And one thing that made Ringo great was the ability to really do just the right drumming and leave a lot of the predictable stuff out to give everything more punch. Referencing Charlie Watts of the Rolling stones, another drummer was asking him about his style and saying that he was minimalistic and he nodded and said, yeah about the only person who leaves more out of what could potentially be done is Charlie Watts. I think he was quite deliberate in that and there are times when he really shows off his chops. Sometimes early and sometimes late in the Beatles, but mostly his chops were that understanding of manipulating space in an arrangement.
Paul really brings it on this one and on the whole album, Abbey Road is always in the conversation as best album ever. The ending songs/sequences on both sides are mind blowing, time to toss on I Want You (She's So Heavy)! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Yeah, you should never underestimate the deep tracks from a one-hit wonder band....jus' sayin'.😉 Paul really wanted his rough voice for this one, but he didn't want to totally damage his voice trying to sing it, so he only did one take each day, belting it out each time. It took him 7 days to get the right take. According to the book included in the 2019 Abbey Road Super Deluxe Edition, it was Paul on piano, John on guitar & George on bass(!). Apparently, not an uncommon thing for the lads to switch roles sometimes. Cheers! 🪲🪲🪲🪲
The song is Paul’s plea to John not to leave the group. At the time, there was much discord among them with John and every member at times threatening to leave. So indeed it was very personal from Paul. After all they had known each other since 1957, when John invited Paul to join his group The Quarrymen. And the rest as they say….😁
Great, just great. It was great to hear you guys reacting to one of the greatest groups of all time. You were right there with 'em you were great!! Great reaction, btw. 😊😂🤙🏼🎶❤️✨️🐏❓️❌️🕊✅️😮💨
Holy smokes! Been a minute since I’ve heard this one. Like you said, the whole thing is put together well, but Ringo has always been my focal point on this song. He was killin’ it without getting excessive. Nice. Btw, the fireworks effects are a keeper! Ha ha! Excellent choice Sonia. Enjoyed the review SAD. Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it!
That "not even the best drummer in the Beatles" quote is (sadly perhaps) apocryphal. Ringo was the business. That said, Paul was a more than capable drummer (he could play pretty much anything); that's Paul on drums and bass on The Ballad Of John & Yoko, with John on rhythm and lead guitars.
Love this, thanks guys. This helps confirm an opinion I have thought about for years. Americans love anything in 12/8, it just fits like a fine wool glove, lol. Thanks!!
Hi there, awesome reaction For you own edification, John lennon never dissed Ringo, that was an English comedian who came up with that quote. Here are Lennons actual thoughts on his friend, ""Ringo was a star in his own right in Liverpool before we even met. He was a professional drummer who sang and performed and had Ringo Starr-time, and he was in one of the top groups in Britain but especially in Liverpool before we even had a drummer. So Ringo's talent would have come out one way or the other." P.S. Paul on piano/vocals, John on guitar, George on Bass and RINGO! Cheers!
That scream of Paul's was acquired by hanging out with Little Richard in Hamburg. (hint, hint) And that's also how they met Billy Preston, the 5th Beatle. And Ringo is still a solid anchor.
I read somewhere online the following: When asked if Ringo Starr is the best drummer of the world, John Lennon replied Ringo may not be the best drummer of the world, but he's the best drummer of the Beatles. That's what I believe. I simply can't believe John dissed Ringo.

Paul didn't "partake" like a few of his cohorts. That's interesting because for years, everybody assumed that a lot of the latter Beatles material was drug-influenced.
2 comments. Mcartney was drinking heavily during this period (by his own admission) and 2. George Harrison is playing the bass. But great reaction as always.
Did anyone hear that new Beatles song that was made using AI-I guess to isolate John’s vocals from a prior track and then added in some guitar George did that they wanted to use with it. Anyway, it’s a whole story and I’m surprised I was able to recall that much. 😂 I liked it. But love this! Happy Thanksgiving!
@@SightAfterDark You NEED to REACT to the OFFICIAL VIDEO for "NOW and THEN" which was dropped on Nov. 3 rd, the last Beatles song ever. You are late to the party on this one! LOL! It was a good composition and Paul did decently on the vocals. But the synthesizer always annoyed me and I agreed with John Lennon, that the song might have fit his style better than McCartney.
