I was at an auction that had a violin for sale I played it some to test I did place a few bids on it but was outbid by another fellow No problem not a very good instrument. When the Auctioneer handed the violin to the winning bidder, He imedently removed it from its case and started trying to play it, It was obvious he did not know how to play, The harder he tried the angrier he became. He then came up to me and said You took the magic back from the violin just because I outbid you. Shocked I asked what magic? He informed me He knew no one could play the violin on their own, The person has to put magic into the violin for it to play. I replied The only magic was the eight hours a day for years I spent practicing This just upset him more As this was upsetting everyone and There was nothing else I was interested in, I just left and let him rant, the auctioneer called a recess and left as well. I believe the man must have been a bit unbalanced. that's why I knew it was little use to argue with him.
Hi, thanks for the video. I will always opt for a one piece violin back. There is no glue joint to fail in time. IMO the flamed maple of a one piece back looks more exquisite than a two piece back. I understand that both the two and one piece back many not sound any different. However, when buying a violin, give me a one piece back.
I read somewhere that a two piece back was more stable with less chance of movement and warping, especially in humid or dry conditions. I would be interested to know if you have any thoughts on this? Is this also a myth?

There may be even an advantage with 2 piece backs: Both halves might have slightly different acoustic resonance properties which may result in a better sound spectrum. I saw electric planes in Japan which were so precise that no gap was detectabe at the joint and the surfaces were perfectly smooth. May also be ideal for planing the ribs down to 1.5 mm with no tear outs and precise thickness.
Well, here's an argument for a once-piece back! It requires wood that comes from a tree that has been growing for longer, as stated in the video. Forests that are left alone for longer - because the tree needs time to grow - are much better for the environment. They function as effective carbon sinks, more so than new-growth forests. It may not affect the sound at all, but Mother Nature might thank you for choosing a one-piece back all the same! ;)

Does the height of the saddle down at the bottom under the tailpeice play a roll in the performance of the instrument? Does this change between violins, violas, cellos and double basses ? Such a small peice that seems so insignificant but is it really insignificant or does it have an effect?
It has been my believe that the top spruce plate is actually where the sound is vibrating and a one piece back doesn't make much difference in sound. As you said one piece is much more beautiful and finding wood is hard to find. I recently obtained a 4" thick piece of the most beautiful curly maple large enough for a one piece viola. Good violin is a good violin and starts with great premium meterial and great maker and finish and great setup, also good violin don't have to be expensive, also expensive violin don't have to be good - but at the end if you have one maker with 100% same violins with 100% same wood - one one piece and second two piece you will have a better violin and should be 1 piece - why? No cuts and no glue to interfere in vibration. If will be the same then still one piece looks better :) so better at the end. But also beter maker will make better instrument.
ok ok so i never heard of this but im learning . if one piece was a master and two piece was a student and the sound difference is a myth . then what is the difference between a master violin and a student violin . and is there a difference . and should there be . cause i know even if i was a student violinist and i was learning i would want to learn on the best violin i could right so if for say Stradivarius was mass producing his violins still and i could afford one of course i would want his violin and im sure no one would call his violin a student violin . so let me guess . there is no reason a violin should be considered a student violin unless it is one of those cheap china orange noise makers . but lets say you are a master violinist you may be i dont know forgive me for that . but lets say you are a master violin maker and you are of course making master violins right . but you have a student who is learning from you then his violins would be a student violin am i right . well maybe im wrong lol . but i have to ask cause the only stupid question is the one that is not asked . thank you for your time in answering my last question .

Musicians are very guliable to plausible sounding, but completely unfounded pseudoscience.
There is an argument to be made that they can sound different, especially if the one-piece is slab cut.
