I wonder how many people in this movie survived the war games more than 10 years. All of fallout being churned up by the tanks, trucks & horses into their bodies.
Robert McNamara when speaking on the issue of nuclear deterrence brought up an excellent point in that China has effectively achieved deterrence all these years with a very small (compared to US/Russia) nuclear arsenal. Why do we need thousands of warheads and risk potentially wiping out a large portion of life on earth when we can achieve the same goal of nuclear deterrence with perhaps 20 or 30 warheads?
McNamara's comments aren't that relevant in the present day since China has increased warhead production in the hopes of eventually matching the US and Russian stockpiles. Accepted estimates currently put the Chinese stockpile between 250 to 350 warheads. The reason why most nuclear armed states have high numbers is for redundancy, if you have too few you run the risk of having the bulk of your nuclear deterrence being knocked out in a first strike.

@TheKolbeg I stand corrected. Upon further research I find the many of the top minds; Szilard, Fermi, and Teller, were all political refugees who came to work here in the United States. It was their collective hope that their knowledge would not be used for warfare. A bitter irony, but Teller seemed to have no problem uncorking the nuclear genie and promoting the Hydrogen bomb in 1950.
Edward Teller was not a very pleasant person, from what I have read. He was determined to design and produce thermonuclear bombs, but J. Robert Oppenheimer was insistent that we continue with the smaller fission bombs. He was also against the development of the exponentially larger fusion bombs. Teller so desperately wanted to make the thermonuclear fusion bombs, that he went after Oppenheimer, publicly claiming that Oppenheimer was a Communist sympathizer. This was only based on Teller's "opinion", but this animosity resulted in Oppenheimer's security clearance being revoked.

12:54 Gotta love the poor lad dropping on his ass whilst taking part of the staged cheering... But thanks to Chairman Mao's thoughts, he gets back up and carries on cheering like a champ!
*Thanks to chairman Mao, That man no longer exists*
It was a beautiful site..almost brought me to tears..
They were forced to cheer like that at gunpoint. That's why he got up so quickly.
My respect to these predecessors who were born at a tougher time and had to work super hard to build the foundation of modern China. They would be proud to know that China has achieved unimaginable success if they were still alive today.
China killed a lot of them
Oh yeh because genocide (literally happening now) is really unimaginable success
OK you clearly not a scientist I get it but they just storm into a zone that a nuclear bomb was Detonate So most chances all of them have absorbed a massive amount of radiation, I'll be surprised if any of them is alive just Because of the percentage of how many of them are gonna get cancer I mean they were exposed to huge amount of radiation most of them probably died within 2, maybe 3 years after that happened

War...war never changes...
I especially like the approved Red Guards entertainment at 8:07. No chance of any decadent imperialist western immorality seeping into these ranks. Chairman Mao shows how happy you can be with a bowl of rice and cold carp, while staring down the barrel of an AK47.
I'm surprised that as early as 1966 Lin was mentioned before Zhou.
20:10 Me pregunto cuántos de esos soldados fallecieron en poco tiempo por la radiación. I wonder how many of those soldiers died in a short time from radiation.
Many

Nuclear war ?????
Setting off bombs is one thing-mastering how to deliver on a strategic level is a whole other process!!! 🤔🤔🤔🤔
8:35 oddly enough it turns out that their A-bomb was made of the same materials.
What materials ?

Those fire balls are really weird.
"One of Chairman Mao's sentences are greater than a thousand other sentences!" That's the funniest thing I've heard this year. The "thermonuclear bomb" looked like a fake, tritium-enriched A-bomb that was air-burst for best effect.
And the added sound effects were completely unrealistic.

The wonderful enthusiam the people emote over nuclear armaments: Iran had similar films/enthusiasm. Happy happy revolutions...hard to beat.
At 26:43, a stray dog can be seen in front of a test structure. It's a safe bet it met its destruction there.
poor dog
the peoples testing dog perished bravely and earnestly for the vision of chairman mao the party and the peoples liberation army in order to show that our dogs are superior to the inferior dogs of the imperialist west.
Yeah that poor thing was chained up outside, directly exposed to the bomb to test the effects.
I was watching this videos and I just felt so bad to see that dog... I came to the comments just to find someone mention it u_u
At time stamp 26:40, I can make out a silhouette of something just below the middle window of the structure. By 26:42, it can be seen it's a dog. Meeting it's demise at 26:43.
Poor mutt, must've wondered into the structure.
"This is a gigantic success of Mao Tse Tung thought!" - It was really a gigantic success of diplomacy of begging the Soviet Union to get the tech that they in turn had stolen from USA when they were allied during WW2.
The Dog survived and then Mao ate it!
The weapon at 26:31 was a "boosted" fission weapon.
Boosted how - with tritium?
"Boosted" in this case means they stole the plans.
Or deuterium. They did not say.
No. Not necessary, since this was a known technique at the time.
If you look closely you can see a dog in the video at your time stamp.
chickens are really resilient to radiation. Up to 100 rads. So keep chickens in case of nuclear war.
Your not just saying that because your last name is chook?
*_"They're all dead, Dave . . ."_* - 👀
26:38 They left a dog tied up outside that building.
I had to hold down my lunch to watch this. And that bloody happy happy music.
All Westerners here are mocking the red thoughts and Mao in the film, but as a Chinese, I am grateful to these people who have worked tirelessly for nuclear weapons. All the people in the film are our heroes. This is nuclear deterrence and the key to ensuring peace. (Because of nuclear deterrence, big powers dare not start wars easily, so World War III is still far away from us)
No shit. The man was a fucking maniac.
I aint he killed 60 Mio poeple and these nuke test costed the lives of over 70000 peopel lop nor is right next to the capital of xinjang

Why the translation is in English. May be BBC journalist were called .
We should just make everything out of what the cameras were made of the film too, no radiation damage, astonishing, yea just build cameras just like these just big enough we can live in.
I am wondering, where there local people croowded and picnic on the test site after detonation as happened in Los Alamos ?

This entire film feels like something from a dystopia movie. The mix of the chilling subject matter with the inspiring music, constant cheerfulness and patriotic slogans, all in crappy video and audio quality. But it's 100% real!

Isn't it fortunate that Chairman Mao had all the nuclear physics figured out, so that these scientists only had to read up on how to build the bomb in Chairman Mao's thought!
