Create depth, or the illusion of depth, with Layer Maps. Layer Maps are an incredible feature once we understand how they work. This basic introduction to the concept will look at 3 applications of maps to create depth. The specific systems may be slightly different, but the core concept is the same: 2d image data will tell pixels, particles, and vertices, where to move and by how much. Layer Maps are a powerful and fundamental tool, so I hope this helps get you started using them!

Is it possible to mix the first two steps? for example, making a composition with the 3d movement of the displacement map and tell plexus to "see" that composition and make it as particles, so when you see the 3d topography will have movement.... ?
i dont know if this make sense, i imagine the particle topography moving upside down could look cool (maybe also u can keyframe the Z axys of plexus)

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I would personally not mix the displacement map and particle methods. But, anything that is a layer can be used as a displacement map either before of after effects are applied, so it's absolutely possible to use a displaced layer as the map. If the goal is to get movement into the particles though, I would still use a layer map effector and keyframe the values of that effector rather than alter the map to create motion on various axes. But, animating the map itself can have some very interesting effects, since it's changing the instructions rather than the interpretation of the instructions. But, I would love to see the results of your experiments, I'll bet it will be some very visually interesting stuff!

The trick is to get a depth map that matches with the depth of that real photo. There are services that can estimate such a depth map. Give it a try.
