    I love all the know it all comments. 400 hz? I guess they cant read the the nameplate you got a close up on. It clearly says 60 hz....lol The 3 phase might be an issue, as you really dont want to run unbalanced loads, meaning loading 2 phases with current and 1 phase without any. That is definitely not a preferred way of doing it. Nice find and probably a rock solid unit. Just be careful man, you really look like you dont have any Electrical experience.

      Aircraft generators are 400 Hz. That generator is a Ground Power Unit for aircraft. I
      t would damage almost any appliance that requires 60Hz, like a refrigerator etc. So much for an emergency power unit for disaster areas.

  • @detaart
    @detaart 7 лет назад +30

    I would purge the fuel system, get a new filter, etc. You never know. There might be quite a bit of water in the tank after sitting for such a long time.
    If you run it low on fuel, you risk sucking in all that crap through the IP and ruin it + the injectors. Costly to repair.

    • @d.hansel854
      @d.hansel854 7 лет назад +1

      Your right about flushing the fuel, putting a new filter. Also do that with the oil. I did notice the oil light was on. Also needs a new oil filter and drain the radiator and refill it with right amount of anti-freeze.
      I would check the fan belts and all the hoses.
      Just go through it and replace as much as you can.
      These big generators, especially the military have their own wiring outputs.
      They are not forgiving.

    Nice score. Diesel generators are great; I have a very small one myself. Those hours are high for military use but for everyone else ... with regular oil changes and clean fuel, you'll get 100,000 hours out of it before it needs a major overhaul. Keep in mind though: DON'T RUN IT WITH NO LOAD OR AN UNDERSIZED LOAD except for very brief tests. If run without sufficient load, diesel engines will develop a "wet stack" condition and will require some time-consuming maintenance to fix.

    Engine RPM will dictate frequency, which should be 1800 RPM. The throttle lever (round black knob) is to the right of the air intake, just beneath the control panel. Once you increase the throttle you'll notice the frequency dial rotate up towards 60 Hz.

    Yep, 400Hz is accurate. 400 Hz is typical of those, they power the mobile maintenance shelter vans you see the military using. there are ways to change it over to 60Hz those cable outlets are 100 amp rated. This guy is playing with a human bug zappa, and he is definately a darwin candidate....... Drop that external hose in a 55 gallon drum or thousand of gallons semi trailer. They do have a bolt on trailer kit, so he is on the right track there..... Watching to see his reaction to the noise... Now he can power half the neighborhood if he can afford the diesel.

    Yesss Battle Short! I've worked on many military gens like this, always got a kick out of battle short. Look at those schematics on the enclosure doors and you'll see the battle short switch literally bypasses every safety system on the unit. You could put a bullet through the sump and lose all the oil and she'll still run until the rings seize, love it.
    The voltage restrap board cannot switch a three phase unit to a single phase unit. You'll have the option to be 480 in one position and 208 in the other, all three phase. The external 120V residential outlets are powered by seperate windings in the stator. Theyll always have power even when the main breaker is opened.
    State municipalities in our area like these units because they are cheap cheap cheap. 142 hours is WAY high, especially if she sat for three years. In my experience (limited but still) these never have over 50-75 hours. Think about it... these arent little portable generacs for your table saw on a job site. These are for large Kw three phase applications that are prioritized by utility companies. These maybe power critical infrastructure for a couple hours three or four times a year.
    No glow plugs but look at the little bung on the intake manifold, thats an ether assist, AKA "winter kit" which you do have.
    Lead acid or NiCad for gensets, never AGM. Whenever we see optimas in an overachievers genset we recommend they get out of there. Absorbed glass mat batteries are mostly designed for impact absorption, not being on a trickle charger forever and ever and discharging once or twice a year.
    Hopefully your friend paid pennies for it, they're cheap but rare and def cool to play with. I'd buy one just to mess with the Battle Short...

    You didn't say what exactly what it was, but you made a reference to the frequency of the generator. You need to be careful about that. They made two versions of those generators. One runs at 60 Hz, the other runs at 400 Hz. By your comment "that can't be right" I bet you got a 400 HZ model didn't you?

    CE1 here. I’d take some time a read the manuals. They do kill. This I know. And the one that died went through the same school I did. Read the manual and ware long sleeves and jeans at the least. Keep the doors closed when it’s running and put back the insulators. I hope you get to take this to disaster zones. Try to coordinate with some existing groups who do this. I work hurricane recovery through those channels. Just driving towards a wiped out town with this in tow don’t guarantee you getting it in no matter how bad they need it.

    4:20 Power output over 100% is called WEP "War Emergency Power". It's a state that allows for greater output at the cost of damaging the equipment. It's typically used in conjunction with something called "battleshort" where the safety features are bypassed to guarantee the equipment will continue to function during an emergency situation. Battleshort comes from "shorting" the equipment by replacing fuses with copper bus bars of sufficient thickness to handle the current

    WTF was so funny ?
    Military auctions their crap off all the time. And most of this stuff is treated/serviced like it was gold. And it's usually cheap. And the ground flyboys are very good with servicing their 'equipment. (Wink wink).
    And you seem to know enough about electric to get yourself killed. I've seen powerlines arch through plywood in the light rain.
    You said it was light raining and your keys are jangling near your nut sack and the power ports - be careful will ya or you'll be the disaster relief .....

    • @ethanlamoureux5306
      @ethanlamoureux5306 5 лет назад

      Power lines usually operate at 7200 volts or higher. This operates at a maximum of 425 volts. I don’t think it’s going to do any arcing at such voltages, but it could still kill him if he stuck something where it doesn’t belong, like those keys or his fingers... I agree, he seems to have just enough knowledge about electricity to get himself killed.

  • @csjaugiedog

    The item you have is a 400Hz generator. It was designed to be a ground power unit for aircraft systems that use 400Hz. That doesn't seem to mean anything to you! ....Believe me, IT SHOULD! Just because your AC voltages measure to your liking, doesn't mean your 60Hz appliances (in your dads home) will agree. In fact; you will almost certainly damage ALL of them. You are probably looking at replacing the alternator half of the unit with one that is designed to produce 50/60Hz.

    It's been a few years since you made this video. I hope that before you ran that old (tractor) engine again that you drained all the old fuel, changed the fuel filters, drained the oil, and changed the oil filters, and refilled with fresh fuel and oil. Diesel's are peculiar about having good and clean fuel.

  • @User2718218
    @User2718218 11 лет назад +2

    For sure it looks like a 400 Hz model. Aircraft use 400 Hz AC power and it says US Air Force. If that's the case I hope that Russ can convert it to 60 Hz. That thing is worth a fortune.
    Russ: My advice is to keep it for your family. Stock diesel and filters and oil. When a disaster strikes, just offer your services with the teams that set up generators - the best of both worlds. You have an *awesome* find, a military generator tank.

  • @ricktimmons458

    even if it works, military generators are difficult to use. In Alabama you will have to pay Southern Company a demand fee! yes i said PAY. the PSC passed a tax - fee for standby power use such as solar panel. Am sure it applies to large generators too.

    If you still have this gen set, see if you can find an ASK (acoustical suppression kit) for it. They're like a foam core encasement that bolts right onto the set's frame. I must've installed forty or more back when I was a Generator Mechanic in the Army.
    You're gonna need to find an alternative to some of the K relays behind the control panel, and someone to rebuild the alternator if you can't find some retrofit.
    The missing tag was likely to just there to show that the generator is at the 10/20 level of maintenance standards, i.e. just as it came from the manufacturer. 10 level is the Operator's level of maintenance, and 20 level is the Mechanic's level...basic routine maintenance of the engine and minor electrical components. That is required before any Unit can turn the equipment in.
    How is it running these days?

    Frequency knob is directly linked to the governer rpm set point. Usually the rpm has to be on 1800 for 60 hz output. 1800 / 60 = 30 inversion steps per rotation inside of the generator... kind of...
    Gasoline engines that torques at higher rpm use different generators with different windings. These numbers might be slightly different for your genset. But for sure, frequency knob shall change the rpm of the engine.
