If you love Jane Austen's novels and want to read novels in the same vein, try Elizabeth Gaskell. Novels include North and South, Wives and Daughters, Cranford, and Ruth!

North and South is one of my absolute fav classics! Especially as a P&P fan!

I recommend Jane Austen: The Banker’s Sister by E. J. Clery. It’s about Jane’s relationship with her brother Henry, who inspired some characters especially Henry Crawford.
Also, I agree John Mullan’s book is fantastic!

I’m a huge Jane Austen fan love her books! Love the movies and tv dramas, I’ve just ordered a couple of Jane Austen devotional: the new one is praying with Jane and it’s out 2nd Nov. I also have several cross stitches of Jane Austen and Jane Austen characters though mainly pride and prejudice. Have u ever played the ha match making card game? Plus I had a Jane Austen regency style wedding dress, walked out of the church to Mrs Darcy from 2005 p&p film. And had a barn dance instead of a disco!! I also hate when they get the era confused with Victorian and regency xx just subscribed x

Look up the Folio Society editions of Jane Austen's novels, they're beautiful!

I second what this "Lizzie" recommended. The Folio editions are a boxed set, with Red or pink/blue hardbound covers, and there ARE seven volumes. I think Jane "reads" better from a hardback.

Lady Susan is included in the clothbound Penguin "Love and Friendship" (along with some of her juvenilia), which is a rather pretty edition!

Oh, man. This is the first of your videos I've seen and I love your screen presence! You're so happy and fun, I love it! And I've been making copious notes! Also, I've got to say I love Georgette Heyer as another Jane Austen-like writer. :)

I think a really great edition to Jane Austen's books are the barnes and noble collectible flexibound versions. They're really pretty. So far they only have Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion. But their version of Emma is said be releasing on January 28th. Aside from that, both Canterbury Classics and Barnes and Noble have bind up versions of all 6 of Austen's novels together that also look real pretty and are leather bound.

Just found you and just suscribed, but a couple Christmases ago, I got Edgar and Emma by Robert Rodi. It is really quite good and, while NOT an exact duplicate of her story (it was a brief essay Ms. Austen wrote and this author completed it), it is quite good and I recommend it.

Thanks for the recommends. There are a few you mentioned that I would like to have. The field is wide open and if you're not careful, your pocketbook will be completely open as well. Any Janeite knows the value of the serious books and the fun books. I have read a lot of the adaptations but they all seem to leave me with a weird taste in my mouth, no one can write her characters like she can. There are a few that are really good, I will go back, get their titles and post. You may enjoy them.

I really enjoyed _A Jane Austen Education_ Author (male) goes through the different things he learned about himself through reading each of the novels. He makes some very insightful comments about the novels along the way. For me personally it was interesting because he tells of his encounters with Jane Austen in grad school and writing his dissertation about her.

now i am very surprised there's no complete Jane Austen, i never knew and i think i know everything

    • @josephinewinter

Pride and Prejudice is the most fun and Persuasion is the most perfectly plotted novel, but very short and a novel that gains in poignancy with age - it's about a question, what would have happened?, that you will never know the answers to, so you both do and don't get the answer, but it's a novella and an old person's novel - looking back on your youthful mistakes. I'd read Pride & Prejudice, because it is the most fun. I often read it as a pick-me-up it's so happy. Some of her other books are bit half so-so... she died very young, so didn't get many chances
